Bioengineering (Basel)

January 2024

Big Biomedical Data Research Laboratory, Dean's Office, Hadassah Medical Center, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem 91120, Israel.

The objective of this study was to analyze the associations between temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) components, consequences, and related conditions. This research analyzed data from the Dental, Oral, Medical Epidemiological (DOME) records-based study which integrated comprehensive socio-demographic, medical, and dental databases from a nationwide sample of dental attendees aged 18-50 years at military dental clinics for 1 year. Statistical and machine learning models were performed with TMDs as the dependent variable.

February 2023

Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases Research of Anhui Province, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Stomatologic Hospital & College, Anhui Medical University, 81 Meishan Road, Hefei, 230032, Anhui, China.

Background: Teeth can be used as a raw material for preparing bone substitutes due to their similar chemical composition to bone. The objective of our study was to evaluate the effect of odontogenic biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) incorporating dentin noncollagenous proteins (DNCPs) on osteogenesis and stability in maxillary sinus augmentation.

Methods: The composition, structure and morphology of the odontogenic BCP were tested by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, and scanning electron microscopy methods.

Angiopoietin-like 4 (ANGPTL4) promotes cancer cell migration through vessels and has been implicated in cancer metastasis. Our previous study identified a robust increase in ANGPTL4 mRNA expression in lung-metastasized tongue cancer (TC) cells. Therefore, the present study investigated the association of ANGPTL4 with lung metastasis and outcomes of patient with TC.

Pre-Operative Oral Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients Attending Surgical Removal of Mandibular Third Molar Teeth.

Healthcare (Basel)

January 2021

Department of Endodontics, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Hadassah School of Dental Medicine, Hebrew University, Jerusalem 91120, Israel.

The study aimed to measure the pre-operative oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and to identify patient and teeth pathologies associated with worse OHRQoL among patients attending mandibular third molar tooth extraction. Data were collected preoperatively from 199 patients attending surgical removal of their mandibular third molar. To that end, we measured the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) and analyzed its association with: (1) demographics; (2) health-related behaviors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and dietary habits; (3) Plaque Index (PI); (4) Decay, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT); and (5) clinical characteristics related to third molar extraction, such as the indication for extraction, tooth angulations, and radiographic pathology.

Background: The treatment of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) is a urological issue. Recent studies have revealed cancer promotion via the C5a-C5a receptor (C5aR) system. To establish a new therapeutic target for CRPC, we investigated an association of the system with CRPC progression and evasion from the antitumor immune responses.

Promoting Osseointegration of Dental Implants in Dog Maxillary Sinus Floor Augmentation Using Dentin Matrix Protein 1-Transduced Bone Marrow Stem Cells.

Tissue Eng Regen Med

October 2020

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Center, Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases Research of Anhui Province, Stomatologic Hospital and College, Anhui Medical University, Hefei, 230032, China.

Background: Beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) has been employed successfully as a synthetic graft material in maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA) for placing dental implants. However, the lack of osteogenic and osteoinductive properties of this substitute invariably results in bone regeneration of low quality and quantity. The purpose of this study was to determine whether loading dentin matrix protein-1 (DMP1) gene-modified bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) onto β-TCP promoted bone regeneration and osteointegration of dental implants in MSFA of dogs.

Minor salivary glands: Clinical, histological and immunohistochemical features of common and less common pathologies.

Acta Histochem

November 2019

Dept. Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine and Oral Radiology, School of Dental Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel; Institute of Pathology, The Chaim Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, Ramat Gan, Israel.

Hundreds of minor salivary glands (MiSGs) are scattered in the oral cavity located at the submucosa layer. Beside their role in the oral cavity lubrication and immunity defence system, MiSGs are beneficial tissue source for diagnosing oral and non-oral related diseases. The advantage of MiSGs as a diagnostic tool reside on their fairly simple excisional procedure on one hand and negligible impact of the normal secretion capability of the salivary gland system on the other hand.

September 2018

Oral Medicine Clinic for Hematologic and Oncologic Patients, Department of Oral Medicine, Sedation and Maxillofacial Imaging, Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine, Jerusalem, Israel; Department of Oral Medicine, Oral and Maxillofacial Center, Medical Corps, Israel Defense Forces, Israel. Electronic address:

About half of individuals diagnosed with medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) are multiple myeloma (MM) patients, and most are treated using antibiotics for long-term courses. The penicillin group is recommended as the empiric drug of choice, and quinolones, metronidazole, clindamycin, doxycycline, and erythromycin as alternatives. This paper suggests the macrolide clarithromycin as the empiric antibiotic therapy of MRONJ in MM patients because of its better pharmacologic properties in comparison to erythromycin, and the beneficial effect of this agent in MM.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most malignant tumors with high mortality rate worldwide. Biomarker discovery is critical for early diagnosis and precision treatment of this disease. MicroRNAs are small noncoding RNA molecules which often regulate essential biological processes and are good candidates for biomarkers.
