In order to study the role of methionine enkephalin (met-enkephalin) in cardiovascular system, interaction between clonidine and met-enkephalin on the rate of sympathetic nerve discharge was investigated. In anesthetized rabbits multiunit renal nerve activity (RNA) was monitored after the treatment of met-enkephalin alone or met-enkephalin plus clonidine pretreatment. Met-enkephalin suppressed RNA, and reduced heart rate and blood pressure.

Radiolabeled microspheres were used to measure blood flows (BF) among and within the ankle plantar flexor muscles of rats during swimming and during treadmill running. During swimming, BF was significantly elevated over preexercise quadrupedal standing in plantaris and red and middle portions of gastrocnemius muscles, but was significantly lower in soleus muscles. During treadmill locomotion at 60 m x min(-1), BF in soleus muscle was the same as during preexercise, while BF to plantaris and red and middle gastrocnemius muscles was significantly increased.

Ten 4-[p-[bis(2-chloroethyl)amino]phenyl]butyrates were synthesized and evaluated for antitumor activity. The 2-phenoxyethyl ester exhibited activity against P-388 lymphocytic leukemia, and the n-butyl and n-pentyl esters exhibited activity against L-1210 lymphoid leukemia in initial screening tests.
