The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of strontium-yttrium-90 beta-irradiation in treating both primary and recurrent pterygia, focusing on recurrence rates and functional outcomes.
Over a follow-up period averaging nearly 47 months, the treatment successfully reduced the size of all pterygia without any reported recurrences or side effects and improved visual acuity and astigmatism.
The findings suggest that this beta-irradiation treatment is efficient and well-tolerated, offering better aesthetic and rehabilitative outcomes compared to traditional methods, particularly for recurrent cases after surgery.
