Article Synopsis
  • The immune system regulates ovarian function by managing the balance of follicle activation and atresia through various signaling molecules like growth factors and cytokines.
  • Different immune cells, such as macrophages, have distinct roles in follicle growth, and recent research highlights the existence of two populations of macrophages in the ovaries.
  • Immune-related conditions, like premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), can arise from autoimmune responses or viral infections, prompting the need for further studies on new immunotherapies and their impact on ovarian health.

Antimicrobial resistance is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest threats to human and animal health and the environment. To evaluate the resistance rate of biovar haemolytica, which contributes to bacteremia, oophoritis, ovarian follicle degeneration, salpingitis, decreased egg production, and increased mortality in hens, strains isolated from the reproductive tracts of layers were analyzed. The oviducts were taken from three hens from each of 10 flocks manifesting clinical signs related to laying.

Macro-FSH is a rare cause of inappropriately high FSH concentrations.

Endocrinol Diabetes Metab Case Rep

October 2024

Endocrinology Unit, Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Milan, Italy.

Summary: Assessment of hormone concentrations can be subjected to laboratory pitfalls. Macro-hormones are hormone-autoantibody complexes which are cleared slowly from circulation and cause a false elevation in hormones' concentrations. Macro-prolactin and macro-thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) are most frequently encountered while macro-follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) has been rarely reported.

Few cases of antemortem ovarian torsion and diagnosis have been described in reptiles. This case series reports clinical and ultrasound findings in five adult (aged 1-6 yr) female geckos (three leopard geckos [], one crested gecko [], and one gargoyle gecko []) diagnosed with unilateral ovarian torsion between 2019 and 2023. All animals presented with acute weakness associated with coelomic distension, and one suffered from chronic diarrhea and cachexia.

Xanthogranulomatous oophoritis is a rare, chronic and non-neoplastic condition in which a heavy foamy histiocyte inflammatory infiltrate admixed with neutrophils, plasma cells, multinucleated giant cells, fibroblasts and foci of necrosis causing extensive tissue damage and organ destruction. The gallbladder and kidney are just two examples of the different organs that exhibit histological changes resembling xanthogranulomatous alteration. The present case involved a 40-year-old female who presented with a tuboovarian mass and was ultimately diagnosed with xanthogranulomatous oophritis, despite initial clinicoradiological suspicions for malignancy.
