Background: Insulinomas are the most common tumour of the endocrine pancreas in dogs. These malignant tumours have a high metastatic rate and limited chemotherapeutic options. The multi-receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor sunitinib malate has benefit in the treatment of metastatic insulinoma in people.

Background: A dental therapy dog may help anxious patients in the dental clinic overcome their fear and facilitate the completion of necessary dental care. Dental clinic activities are associated with hazards that may pose potential risks to the health and safety of the dental therapy dog.

Objectives: To describe potential hazards associated with risks to health and safety to therapy dogs in dental clinics and to present suggestions for risk minimisation by adopting best practices in dental clinic settings.

Background: Dog-assisted therapy in the dental clinic may be an attractive alternative to sedation for anxious patients. Including a dental therapy dog in a clinical setting introduces new hazards and potential risks to health and safety for both humans and animal.

Objectives: The study aims to describe potential hazards associated with risks to humans by having a therapy dog present in the dental clinic and to provide guidance on best practices to minimise and control risks for the patients, the dentist, and the dental clinic staff.

For epidemic models, it is shown that fatal infectious diseases cannot drive the host population into extinction if the incidence function is upper density-dependent. This finding holds even if a latency period is included and the time from infection to disease-induced death has an arbitrary length distribution. However, if the incidence function is also lower density-dependent, very infectious diseases can lead to a drastic decline of the host population.

While certainly not a novel concept, faecal microbiota transplant (FMT) has recently garnered renewed interest in veterinary medicine due to its remarkable success in treating recurrent infection (CDI) in man. There is a dearth of information on indications and efficacy of FMT for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders in the horse; however, based on evidence in man and other veterinary species, and anecdotal reports in horses, FMT may be a useful treatment for selected cases of acute and chronic diarrhoea and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in the horse. In the absence of evidence, expert opinion is offered on case selection and FMT procedure.

Although amniotes (reptiles, including birds, and mammals) are capable of replacing certain tissues, complete appendage regeneration is rare. Perhaps the most striking example is the lizard tail. Tail loss initiates a spontaneous epimorphic (blastema-mediated) regenerative program, resulting in a fully functional but structurally non-identical replacement.

The objective of this research was to investigate factors associated with serum haptoglobin (Hp) levels in newborn calves. In addition, the associations between serum Hp levels in newborn calves with growth, morbidity, and mortality in calves <4 mo of age were investigated. A total of 1,365 Holstein heifer calves from 15 dairy farms were enrolled in this study from January to December, 2008.

Adenoviral infection was associated with hemorrhagic enteritis, serosal hemorrhages, and severe pulmonary edema in six captive moose (Alces alces) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada: an adult female moose and three calves in 1985 and two calves in 1998. Adenoviral disease was suspected based on histological findings of systemic vasculitis and widespread thrombosis associated with amphophilic intranuclear inclusions in endothelial cells. Diagnosis was confirmed by immunohistochemistry using antiserum to bovine adenovirus type 5, transmission electron microscopic identification of viral particles consistent in morphology with adenovirus within nuclei of pulmonary endothelial cells in an affected calf, and virus isolation.

The sex ratios of bovine embryos produced in vivo and in vitro.

Theriogenology

November 1991

Department of Biomedical Sciences, Ontario Veterinary College University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, Canada, N1G 2W1.

The male:female ratio of developing bovine embryos produced and allowed to develop in vitro and in vivo was determined retrospectively from the cytogenetic analysis of 804 embyos. The overall male:female ratio of the 307 (38%) embryos that could be sexed was 162 (52.8%):145 (47.

This study was carried out to investigate the utility of enzymeimmunoassay (EIA) - derived progesterone profiles in the investigation of postpartum reproductive abnormalities and the effect of their use on reproductive performance in Holstein cows. Whole milk samples, collected twice weekly from parturition until confirmation of pregnancy or removal from the herd, were assayed for progesterone (P4) concentration using a commercially available microtitre plate EIA. The sensitivity, specificity, precision and accuracy were satisfactory to distinguish cyclic changes of P4 reflecting ovarian activity.

In commercial artificial insemination (AI) of sheep, fresh extended semen is deposited into the vagina or cervical os, or fresh extended or frozen semen is placed laparoscopically into the uterus. Transcervical intrauterine insemination of the ewe is not used commercially. In this study, methods of restraint and instrumentation for AI were evaluated and modified to produce a transcervical intrauterine technique suitable for commercial application.

The cervical canal of the ewe does not allow for the consistent transcervical passage of insemination instruments. To define the factors affecting transcervical passage, the gross anatomy of the cervix and canal were studied in 100 estrous ewes and then in their reproductive organs following slaughter. In each ewe, the vagina and cervical opening was examined and the external os was classified into one of four types.

Ninety-two cows that calved between April and August 1984 in a commercial dairy herd were studied. The cows were randomly assigned to receive either cloprostenol (500 mug) or saline placebo on Day 26 postpartum. In addition, each cow was examined per rectum, had three endometrial biopsies taken and milk progesterone level determined.

In a survey of coagulation, biochemical and hematological parameters in cattle homozygous (deficient), heterozygous (carrier) and non-affected (normal) for Factor XI deficiency, only the Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT) results correlated with plasma Factor XI activity levels. The APTT results and the thrombokinetics for the deficient animals were markedly different from the results of either the carrier or normal animals. However, the APTT assay was shown not to be sufficiently sensitive to differentiate between the normal and carrier state for the coagulation disorder.

Prostaglandin or prostaglandin analogues have been shown to be luteolytic in the pregnant goat. In this study the temporal changes in the plasma concentrations of progesterone during pregnancy and after administration of PGF2a to pregnant goats are described. PGF2a administration to pregnant goats at 30 and 65 days after breeding induced abortion within 34 to 75 hours.
