In the present study, it is aimed to fabricate a novel silk sericin (SS)/wool keratin (WK) hydrogel-based scaffolds using an in situ bubble-forming strategy containing an N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N'-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) coupling reaction. During the rapid gelation process, CO bubbles are released by activating the carboxyl groups in sericin with EDC and NHS, entrapped within the gel, creating a porous cross-linked structure. With this approach, five different hydrogels (S2K1, S4K2, S2K4, S6K3, and S3K6) are constructed to investigate the impact of varying sericin and keratin ratios.

Presentation and management of patients with adrenal masses: a large tertiary centre experience.

Eur J Endocrinol

October 2024

Department of Metabolism and Systems Science, College of Medicine and Health, University of Birmingham, Birmingham B152TT, United Kingdom.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzed adrenal masses in 1,397 patients at a tertiary care center from 1998 to 2022, revealing that most cases were found incidentally, with a median mass size of 2.9 cm and common diagnoses including adrenocortical adenoma, phaeochromocytoma, and adrenocortical carcinoma.
  • - Following the 2016 European guidelines on adrenal incidentalomas, there was a notable decrease in the number of adrenalectomies (6.1% to 4.5%) and a significant increase in the discharge rate for patients with benign adrenal masses (4.4% to 25.3%).
  • - The findings suggest that implementing these guidelines has

Article Synopsis
  • Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a genetic disease linked to the SMN1 gene that causes muscle weakness, with a carrier frequency of about 1 in 50 people and a prevalence of 1-3 per 10,000 live births.
  • Turkey initiated the SMA Carrier Screening Program in 2021 to address increasing carrier rates, particularly due to consanguineous marriages, after noticing cases among children of healthcare workers who were unaware of screening options.
  • A survey of 1,322 healthcare professionals revealed that 5.8% were unfamiliar with SMA and 26% lacked knowledge of the screening program, with significant gaps noted in secondary and tertiary professionals and non-physicians, indicating a need

This study investigates how the combination of robot-mediated haptic interaction and cerebellar neuromodulation can improve task performance and promote motor skill development in healthy individuals using a robotic exoskeleton worn on the index finger. The authors propose a leader-follower type of mirror game where participants can follow a leader in a two-dimensional virtual reality environment while the exoskeleton tracks the index finger motion using an admittance filter. The game requires two primary learning phases: the initial phase focuses on mastering the pinching interface, while the second phase centers on predicting the leader's movements.
