Maternal Serum Folate During Pregnancy and Congenital Heart Disease in Offspring.

JAMA Netw Open

October 2024

Guangdong Cardiovascular Institute, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted in China to explore the relationship between maternal serum folate levels during early to midpregnancy and the risk of congenital heart disease (CHD) in offspring, amid ongoing debates about folate supplementation.
  • The research involved matching 129 cases of CHD with 516 controls based on maternal age, analyzing data from serum levels of folate, vitamin B12, and homocysteine measured around 16 weeks of gestation.
  • Results indicated a U-shaped correlation between maternal folate and CHD risk, where both low and high levels of folate were associated with increased odds of CHD, suggesting potential exacerbating effects from vitamin B12 deficiency or elevated homocysteine levels.

Knowledge, Attitudes, Confidence, and comfort of Nurses and Nursing Students Caring for Military Veterans and Their Families.

J Prof Nurs

September 2024

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, School of Nursing, 12501 Longhorn Parkway, Austin, TX 78732, United States of America.

Article Synopsis
  • National campaigns like 'Joining Forces' have raised awareness about the healthcare needs of military and veteran populations, but many nurses still lack cultural competency in providing optimal care.
  • The study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, confidence, and comfort levels of nurses and nursing students in caring for veterans and their families, while also identifying factors influencing these measures.
  • Findings indicated that increased knowledge about military culture boosts nurses' confidence and comfort in care, particularly for those with family members who have served in the military; hence, targeted education on veteran care competencies is necessary.

Institute of Occupational Health and Environmental Health, School of Public Health, Lanzhou University, Lanzhou, Gansu 730000, People's Republic of China; Shanghai Key Laboratory of Meteorology and Health, Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, Shanghai 200030, People's Republic of China; Shanghai Typhoon Institute, China Meteorological Administration, Shanghai 200030, People's Republic of China. Electronic address:

Objective: Chronic exposure to cold temperature is known to elevate blood pressure, leading to a condition known as cold-induced hypertension (CIH). Our previous research suggested correlations between alterations in gut microbiota, decrease in butyrate level, and the onset and progression of CIH. However, the role of butyrate in CIH and the underlying mechanisms need further investigation.

We present a new highly interdisciplinary project-based course in computer aided drug discovery (CADD). This course was developed in response to a call for alternative pedagogical approaches during the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused the cancellation of a face-to-face summer research program sponsored by the Louisiana Biomedical Research Network (LBRN). The course integrates guided research and educational experiences for chemistry, biology, and computer science students.

Maternal serum neonicotinoids during early-mid pregnancy and congenital heart diseases in offspring: An exploratory study.

Environ Pollut

February 2024

Department of Cardiac Surgery, Guangdong Cardiovascular Institute, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital (Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences), Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • A study investigated the relationship between in-utero exposure to neonicotinoid pesticides and congenital heart diseases (CHDs) in pregnant women, focusing on NEO distribution during early-mid pregnancy.
  • Although no significant overall association between total NEOs and CHDs was found, there was a possible increased risk for septal defects related to higher NEO levels, especially from nitro-containing pesticides.
  • Results suggested that lower education levels in pregnant women correlated with higher NEO exposure, indicating that future studies with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm these findings.

November 2023

Lori Kokoszka, PhD, RN, is an Assistant Professor, Widener University, One University Place, Chester, Pennsylvania.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive incurable disease affecting an individual's cognitive, behavioral, and physical systems. As individuals become more impaired, assistance is required and care may be provided by spouses, family members, or other close companions who serve as informal caregivers. To examine the perceptions and meaning of caring for a person with AD an interpretive descriptive study was used.

With the growing population, industrialization, and agriculture, water contamination not only affects people but entire ecosystems. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), because of their large surface area and porosity, show great potential as adsorbents for removing pollutants, such as heavy metals, from contaminated water. The current research aims at examining copper (II) benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (Cu-BTC) MOFs and understanding the mechanism for their adsorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solution.

Catheter Cardiovasc Interv

May 2023

Department of Cardiology, Emory Health System, Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Background: COVID-19 has disrupted the care of all patients, and little is known about its impact on the utilization and short-term mortality of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) patients, particularly nonemergency patients.

Methods: New York State's PCI registry was used to study the utilization of PCI and the presence of COVID-19 in four patient subgroups ranging in severity from ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) to elective patients before (December 01, 2018-February 29, 2020) and during the COVID-19 era (March 01, 2020-May 31, 2021), as well as to examine the impact of different COVID severity levels on the mortality of different types of PCI patients.

Results: Decreases in the mean quarterly PCI volume from the prepandemic period to the first quarter of the pandemic ranged from 20% for STEMI patients to 61% for elective patients, with the other two subgroups having decreases in between these values.

Protein Eng Des Sel

January 2023

Department of Chemistry and Department of Molecular Biosciences, University of Kansas, 1567 Irving Hill Road, Lawrence, KS 66045, USA.

Human transthyretin (TTR) is a homo-tetrameric plasma protein associated with a high percentage of β-sheet forming amyloid fibrils. It accumulates in tissues or extracellular matrices to cause amyloid diseases. Free energy simulations with thermodynamic integration based on all-atom molecular dynamics simulations have been carried out to analyze the effects of the His88 → Ala and Ser mutations on the stability of human TTR.

Thermal acclimation in brook trout myotomal muscle varies with fiber type and age.

Comp Biochem Physiol A Mol Integr Physiol

February 2023

Widener University, Department of Biology, One University Place, Chester, PA 19013, USA.

As climate change alters the thermal environment of the planet, interest has grown in how animals may mitigate the impact of a changing environment on physiological function. Thermal acclimation to a warm environment may, for instance, blunt the impact of a warming environment on metabolism by allowing a fish to shift to slower isoforms of functionally significant proteins such as myosin heavy chain. The thermal acclimation of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) was examined by comparing swimming performance, myotomal muscle contraction kinetics and muscle histology in groups of fish acclimated to 4, 10 and 20 °C.

Unexpected outbreak of the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has profoundly altered the way of human life and production activity, which posed visible impacts on PM and its chemical species. The abruptly emergency reduction in human activities provided an opportunity to explore the synergetic impacts of multi-factors on shaping PM pollution. Here, we conducted two comprehensive observation measurements of PM and its chemical species from 1 January to 16 February in Beijing 2020 and the same lunar date in 2021, to investigate temporal variations and reveal the driving factors of haze before and after Chinese New Year (CNY).
