Cyclin-dependent kinase regulatory subunit 2 (CKS2) is a member of the cell cycle-dependent protein kinase subunit family, which is implicated as an oncogene in various malignancies. However, the clinical significance, oncogenic functions, and related mechanisms of CKS2 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain largely unclear. In the present study, expression features and prognostic value of CKS2 were evaluated in the bioinformatic databases and HCC tissues.

Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Wake Forest School of Medicine, Center for the Neurobiology of Addiction Treatment, One Medical Center Boulevard, Winston-Salem, NC, 27157-1083, USA.

It has been shown that exposure to cocaine can result in neuroinflammatory responses. Microglia, the resident CNS immune cells, undergo a transition to an activated state when challenged. In rodents, and possibly humans, cocaine exposure activates microglia.

Departments of Emergency Medicine, Implementation Science, and Epidemiology and Prevention, Wake Forest School of Medicine, One Medical Center Boulevard, Winston-Salem, NC.

Article Synopsis
  • The HEART Pathway is a decision tool aimed at identifying emergency department patients with acute chest pain who can be safely discharged early, minimizing unnecessary hospitalizations.
  • Data was collected through interviews with healthcare leaders and emergency department physicians to uncover barriers and facilitators for adopting the HEART Pathway at medical centers.
  • Key obstacles include time and resource demands, electronic health record challenges, and patient concerns, while strengths of the tool are its evidence-backed benefits and ease of use, suggesting that tailored engagement of stakeholders and new technology solutions are crucial for successful implementation.

Renal function and blood pressure are altered in adolescents born preterm.

Pediatr Nephrol

January 2019

Department of Pediatrics, Wake Forest School of Medicine, One Medical Center Boulevard, Winston-Salem, NC, 27157, USA.

Background: Preterm birth increases the risk of hypertension and kidney disease. However, it is unclear when changes in blood pressure (BP) and renal function become apparent and what role obesity and sex play. We hypothesized adolescents born preterm have higher BP and worse kidney function compared to term in an obesity- and sex-dependent manner.

Factors Mediating Outcome After Stroke: Gender, Thrombolysis, and Their Interaction.

Transl Stroke Res

June 2018

Department of Neurology, One Medical Center Boulevard, Wake Forest School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, NC, 27157, USA.

Several studies, but not all, have shown that women benefit more from intravenous thrombolysis than men; few have accounted for pre-stroke mobility. Our aim was to determine whether there was an interaction between gender and thrombolysis treatment in 3-month modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score, after adjusting for pre-stroke mobility. We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 1390 consecutive ischemic stroke patients admitted between October 2012 and July 2015.

Keratoacanthoma of the Nasal Septum Secondary to Ranibizumab Use.

Case Rep Pathol

May 2017

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Crozer-Chester Medical Center, One Medical Center Boulevard, Upland, PA, USA.

Keratoacanthoma (KA) is a benign epithelial tumor that typically presents as a firm, cone-shaped, flesh-colored nodule with a central horn-filled crater. KA is considered to be a low-grade variant of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). We report a rare case of a 72-year-old male who presented with a KA involving the nasal septum, possibly related to ranibizumab use.

Background: Pediatric primary hypertension (HTN) is increasingly recognized, but the effect of patient characteristics such as obesity and race on treatment outcomes is not well described. The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) may also contribute to HTN. We hypothesized patient parameters of these factors, including baseline RAAS, influence blood pressure (BP) response to pharmacological treatment in HTN.

The incidence of small vessel-type (lacunar) ischemic strokes is greater in African-Americans compared to whites. The chronic inflammatory changes that result from lacunar stroke are poorly understood. To elucidate these changes, we measured serum inflammatory and thrombotic biomarkers in African-Americans at least 6 weeks post-stroke compared to control individuals.

Effects of abstinence from chronic cocaine self-administration on nonhuman primate dorsal and ventral noradrenergic bundle terminal field structures.

Brain Struct Funct

June 2016

Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Center for the Neurobiology of Addiction Treatment, One Medical Center Boulevard, Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, NC, 27157-1083, USA.

Repeated exposure to cocaine is known to dysregulate the norepinephrine system, and norepinephrine has also been implicated as having a role in abstinence and withdrawal. The goal of this study was to determine the effects of exposure to cocaine self-administration and subsequent abstinence on regulatory elements of the norepinephrine system in the nonhuman primate brain. Rhesus monkeys self-administered cocaine (0.

Diagnosing bone lesions: a practical non-pathology centric formulaic approach.

Semin Diagn Pathol

January 2014

Department of Pathology, Wake Forest University School of Medicine, One Medical Center Boulevard, Winston-Salem, North Carolina 27157. Electronic address:

Bone lesions are perceived to be some of the most difficult lesions that pathologists encounter. The reasons for this are multiple and include lack of experience/familiarity, the need to rely heavily on non-pathology information and data, and the fact that many lesions are associated with either procedures or treatments with significant morbidity. However, in fact, the majority of bone lesions can be accurately assessed on the basis of data not directly related to traditional pathologic based assessment.

Intestinal fat absorption is known to be, overall, a highly efficient process, but much less is known about the efficiency with which individual dietary fatty acids (FA) are absorbed by the adult small intestine. We therefore measured the absorption efficiency of the major dietary FA using sucrose polybehenate (SPB) as a nonabsorbable marker and analyzed how it is modulated by acyl chain physicochemical properties and polymorphisms of proteins involved in chylomicron assembly. Dietary FA absorption efficiency was measured in 44 healthy subjects fed a standard diet containing 35% fat and 5% SPB.
