University of Southern California, Department of Neurology, 1520 San Pablo St. Suite 3000, Los Angeles, CA 90033, United States; University of Southern California, Department of Population and Public Health Sciences, 2001 North Soto Street, Los Angeles, CA 90033, United States of America. Electronic address:

Exposures to fine particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen dioxide (NO) have been associated with the emergence of depressive symptoms in older adulthood, although most studies used cross-sectional outcome measures. Elucidating the brain structures mediating the adverse effects can strengthen the causal role between air pollution and increasing depressive symptoms. We evaluated whether smaller volumes of brain structures implicated in late-life depression mediate associations between ambient air pollution exposure and changes in depressive symptoms.

Dual kidney transplants from adult marginal donors: Review and perspective.

Clin Transplant

January 2022

Department of Surgery, Section of Transplantation, Wake Forest School of Medicine, One Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA.

The practice of dual kidney transplantation (DKT) from adult marginal deceased donors (MDDs) dates back to the mid-1990s with initial pioneering experiences reported by the Stanford and Maryland groups, at which time the primary indication was estimated insufficient nephron mass from older donors. Multiple subsequent studies of short and long-term success have been reported focusing on three major aspects of DKT: Identifying appropriate selection criteria and developing scoring systems based on pre- and post-donation factors; refining technical aspects; and analyzing mid-term outcomes. The number of adult DKTs performed in the United States has declined in the past decade and only about 60 are performed annually.

Cannabinoid receptor subtype influence on neuritogenesis in human SH-SY5Y cells.

Mol Cell Neurosci

December 2020

Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Wake Forest School of Medicine, One Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27157, USA. Electronic address:

Human SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells stably expressing exogenous CB (CBXS) or CB (CBXS) receptors were developed to investigate endocannabinoid signaling in the extension of neuronal projections. Expression of cannabinoid receptors did not alter proliferation rate, viability, or apoptosis relative to parental SH-SY5Y. Transcripts for endogenous cannabinoid system enzymes (diacylglycerol lipase, monoacylglycerol lipase, α/β-hydrolase domain containing proteins 6 and 12, N-acyl phosphatidylethanolamine-phospholipase D, and fatty acid amide hydrolase) were not altered by CB or CB expression.

Gamma-linolenic acid, Dihommo-gamma linolenic, Eicosanoids and Inflammatory Processes.

Eur J Pharmacol

August 2016

Department of Physiology/Pharmacology, Wake Forest School of Medicine, One Medical Center Blvd, Winston-Salem, NC 27157, USA. Electronic address:

Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA, 18:3n-6) is an omega-6 (n-6), 18 carbon (18C-) polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) found in human milk and several botanical seed oils and is typically consumed as part of a dietary supplement. While there have been numerous in vitro and in vivo animal models which illustrate that GLA-supplemented diets attenuate inflammatory responses, clinical studies utilizing GLA or GLA in combination with omega-3 (n-3) PUFAs have been much less conclusive. A central premise of this review is that there are critical metabolic and genetic factors that affect the conversion of GLA to dihommo-gamma linolenic acid (DGLA, 20:3n-6) and arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4n-6), which consequently affects the balance of DGLA- and AA- derived metabolites.

Early phytocannabinoid chemistry to endocannabinoids and beyond.

Nat Rev Neurosci

November 2014

Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Wake Forest University Health Sciences, One Medical Center Blvd, Winston-Salem, North Carolina 27157, USA.

Isolation and structure elucidation of most of the major cannabinoid constituents--including Δ(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ(9)-THC), which is the principal psychoactive molecule in Cannabis sativa--was achieved in the 1960s and 1970s. It was followed by the identification of two cannabinoid receptors in the 1980s and the early 1990s and by the identification of the endocannabinoids shortly thereafter. There have since been considerable advances in our understanding of the endocannabinoid system and its function in the brain, which reveal potential therapeutic targets for a wide range of brain disorders.
