Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates microstructural abnormalities in white matter among patients with Behcet's disease (BD) and neuro-Behcet's disease (NBD) using tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS).
  • It includes 43 BD patients without neurological symptoms, 15 NBD patients with normal MRI, and 54 matched healthy controls, analyzing various diffusion metrics.
  • Findings show that both BD and NBD patients had lower fractional anisotropy and higher mean and radial diffusivity in white matter, suggesting issues like impaired fiber integrity and demyelination as potential underlying causes.

Purpose: We investigated the diagnostic accuracy of simplified intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) imaging for detecting synovial inflammation in the sacroiliac joint (SIJ) in a population with active sacroiliitis.

Methods: In accordance with the Assessment of Spondyloarthritis International Society criteria, 86 SIJs of 46 patients with active sacroiliitis were included in this retrospective study conducted between November 2020 and January 2022. Based on T1-weighted post-gadolinium images, the SIJs were divided into two groups: synovial inflammation positive (SIP) (n = 28) and synovial inflammation negative (SIN) (n = 58).

  • The study aimed to evaluate how exogenous testosterone affects choroidal parameters in patients with androgen deficiency compared to healthy individuals.
  • Researchers analyzed the eyes of 24 patients with androgen deficiency and 31 healthy volunteers using enhanced-depth imaging optical coherence tomography to measure various choroidal parameters at baseline, 6 weeks, and 18 weeks after treatment.
  • Results showed that while some choroidal measurements initially decreased after testosterone treatment, CVI and luminal area significantly increased and remained elevated even four months post-treatment, indicating a lasting effect on the choroidal structure in androgen-deficient patients.

Enhancing therapeutic effects alginate microencapsulation of thyme and calendula oils using ionic gelation for controlled drug delivery.

J Biomater Sci Polym Ed

December 2024

Faculty of Engineering, Chemical Engineering Department, Ondokuz Mayıs University, Kurupelit Campus, Samsun, Turkey.

This study focuses on encapsulating and characterizing essential oils such as thyme and calendula oils, which are known for their therapeutic properties but are limited in pharmaceutical formulations due to their low water solubility and instability, with alginate microspheres. Alginate presents an excellent option for microencapsulation due to its biocompatibility and biological degradability. The ionic gelation (IG) technique, based on the ionic binding between alginate and divalent cations, allows the formation of hydrogel materials with high water content, mechanical strength, and biocompatibility.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic neurodegenerative case. As the disease progresses, the response time to doses of levodopa (L-Dopa) becomes shorter and the effects of the drug are severely limited by some undesirable side effects such as the 'on-off' phenomenon. In several diseases, including Parkinson's, nanoparticles can deliver antioxidant compounds that reduce oxidative stress.

The escalating occurrence of landslides has drawn increasing attention from the scientific community, primarily driven by a combination of natural phenomena such as unpredictable seismic events, intensified precipitation, and rapid snowmelt attributable to climate fluctuations, compounded by inadequacies in engineering practices during site selection. Within the scope of this investigation, contemporary geodetic techniques using the GNSS were employed to monitor structural and surface deformations in and around a hospital edifice situated within an ancient fossil landslide region. Additionally, inclinometer measurements facilitated the determination of slip circle parameters.
