Introduction: Cyclosporine-A (CsA) and post transplantation cyclophosphamide (PTCy) are common agents used for graft versus host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis in Haploidentical hematopoietic cell transplantation (haplo-HCT). However, the impact of CsA cessation timing in the posttransplant setting on clinical outcomes is uncertain. We aimed to investigate the impact of a novel approach that integrated early CsA cessation with PTCy utilization.

Metaplastic breast cancer is a rare and heterogeneous breast cancer group that encompasses both malign epithelial and mesenchymal tissue components. Squamous cell breast cancer (SCC) is one of the types of metaplastic breast cancer, and diagnosis is established when more than 90% of the malignant cells are of squamous cell origin. Squamous cell metaplastic breast carcinoma is considered an aggressive tumor because of the risk of distant metastases, and there are limited data on treatment patterns.

We present a case of adamantinoma that originated from the fibula and had a large soft tissue component measuring approximately 6 cm. Clinical, radiological, and pathological investigations initially suggested that the tumor might be a bone-invading synovial sarcoma. To the best of our knowledge, no other case of fibular adamantinoma with such a large soft tissue component has been reported in the literature.

Ambiguous melanocytic lesions/tumors (AMLs) can be simply described as melanocytic neoplasms that cannot be differentiated as either a melanoma or a nevus. Preferentially expressed antigen in melanoma (PRAME) is a novel antibody that can help differentiate between nevi and melanomas. However, its usefulness remains controversial in AMLs.

Purpose: To compare the efficacy and safety of Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), Thulium laser enucleation of prostate (ThuLEP) and Thulium fibre laser enucleation of prostate (ThuFLEP) by performing propensity score matched analysis (PSM).

Methods: We retrospectively analysed the patients who underwent HoLEP (Group 1, n = 696), ThuLEP (Group 2, n = 146) and ThuFLEP (Group 3, n = 193) surgery because of benign prostatic obstruction (BPO). A 1:1:1 HoLEP: ThuLEP: ThuFLEP group matching was performed using PSM analysis.

To investigate whether there is a difference in mean diffusivity (MD) and fractional anisotropy (FA) values in the auditory pathways of neurofibromatosis type 1 patients with and without focal areas of abnormal signal intensity (FASI) compared to healthy controls by using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Patients were classified as group 1 with focal areas of abnormal signal intensity in the brainstem, group 2 without focal areas of abnormal signal intensity, and healthy control group 3 according to the MRI findings. Mean diffusivity and fractional anisotropy values of lateral lemniscus, inferior colliculus, corpus geniculatum mediale, Heschl gyrus, and brainstem were compared between groups.

Article Synopsis
  • Spinal muscular atrophy type 1 is a severe illness in young children, often leading to complications like scoliosis and hip deformities, yet treatment with nusinersen improves survival and motor skills.
  • A study involving 29 patients treated with nusinersen showed that while the therapy significantly correlated with better motor function scores, it did not significantly impact the development of spinal and hip deformities.
  • The findings suggest that even with effective treatment, patients continue to experience progressive skeletal changes, highlighting the need for ongoing monitoring and potential additional interventions.

Transfus Apher Sci

August 2024

Department of Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation Center, Ankara Dr. Abdurrahman Yurtaslan Oncology Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Ankara, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the feasibility and success factors of collecting peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) from healthy donors on the 4th day of mobilization, instead of the usual 5th day, using G-CSF.
  • Data from 141 healthy donors showed that 81.6% had adequate mobilization, with higher CD34+ cell counts linked to successful early collection.
  • The researchers developed a predictive model for clinicians considering early collection, highlighting the importance of donor/recipient weight ratio and CD34+ cell count to maximize success rates.
