Objective: To identify the variations in the location of the nerves that may be at risk in hallux valgus (HV) surgery, and to reveal whether these nerves are affected by the anatomical changes associated with HV.

Method: In the formalin fixed, 46 lower extremities (19 female, 27 male) (9 normal, 14 mild HV, 21 moderate/severe HV), extensor hallucis longus tendon (EHL), deep plantar artery, medial dorsal cutaneous (MDCN), deep fibular (DFN), common plantar digital (CPDN) and proper plantar digital (PPDN) nerves were examined. The branches of MDCN extending to the medial side of foot were recorded in three segments.

Attitudes toward intimate partner violence (IPVA) can be considered as approval/acceptance or disapproval/nonacceptance of physical violence against the intimate partner, psychological abuse, and control of the intimate partner. Individual (such as antisocial tendencies and irrational relationship beliefs [IRB]) and social factors (such as traditional norms and beliefs) shape IPVA. Studies on intimate partner violence (IPV) have revealed a significant relationship between IPVA and IPV.

Objective: This study targets women who had a self-defined traumatic childbirth experience to (a) explore the differences between sociodemographic-, obstetric-, and trauma-related variables in relation to the rumination style; (b) determine differences between intrusive and deliberate rumination in relation to posttraumatic growth (PTG) dimensions, and (c) test whether intrusive rumination is associated with deliberate rumination, which in turn is associated with PTG dimensions.

Method: A cross-sectional study design was employed using a web-based survey method for data collection. In total, 202 women who identified their childbirth experience as traumatic participated in this study.

Background: Bisphenol A (BPA) is an environmental contaminant with endocrine-disrupting properties that induce fetal growth restriction (FGR). Previous studies on pregnant ewes revealed that BPA exposure causes placental apoptosis and oxidative stress (OS) and decreases placental efficiency, consequently leading to FGR. Nonetheless, the response of gut microbiota to BPA exposure and its role in aggravating BPA-mediated apoptosis, autophagy, mitochondrial dysfunction, endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS), and OS of the maternal placenta and intestine are unclear in an ovine model of gestation.

PAPILLARY THYROID CARCINOMA FOLLOWING ADALIMUMAB TREATMENT IN ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS: A CAUSAL OR COINCIDENTAL ASSOCIATION?

Acta Endocrinol (Buchar)

February 2024

"Ömer Halisdemir" University Bor Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Training and Research Hospital - Rheumatology, Nigde, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • The use of TNF-α targeting drugs, like Adalimumab (ADA), has significantly improved treatment options for inflammatory rheumatic diseases, particularly ankylosing spondylitis (AS).
  • Despite their benefits, long-term use of these medications can lead to adverse effects, including the rare development of thyroid cancers.
  • A case study highlights a 48-year-old female patient with AS who developed papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) after two years on ADA, emphasizing the need for careful thyroid screening in patients undergoing TNF inhibitor therapy.

Background: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures are one of the most extensively studied injuries in the field of orthopedics, but despite the extensive research, graft selection for ACL reconstruction remains a matter of debate. The present study aims to evaluate the stiffness and elasticity of native ACLs using texture profile analysis and compare results with those of autografts used in ACL reconstruction.

Methods: Included in the study were dissected 12 cadavers from which grafts were recovered.

The study compared high-pressure, microwave, ultrasonic, and traditional extraction techniques. The following extraction conditions were implemented: microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) at 900 W power for durations of 30, 60, and 90 s; ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) at 100% amplitude for periods of 5, 10, and 15 min; and high-pressure processing (HPP) at pressures of 400 and 500 MPa for durations of 1, 5, and 10 min. The highest yield in terms of total phenolic content (PC) was obtained in UAE with a value of 45.

Unlabelled: WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: It was previously reported that perceived external locus of control may exacerbate depressive symptoms, is associated with anxiety, boosts stress and general mental distress and weakens resilience against traumatic situations or difficulties. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Those with a higher external locus of control are more prone to develop PTSD symptoms since the perceived external locus of control is among the predictors of PTSD. An internal locus of control is considered important in preventing PTSD, although an external locus of control appears to be a variable that causes/increases the prevalence of PTSD.

How effective is machine learning in stock market predictions?

Heliyon

January 2024

Omer Halisdemir University, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Department of Business, 51240, Nigde, Turkey.

In this study, it is aimed to compare the performances of the algorithms by predicting the movement directions of stock market indexes in developed countries by employing machine learning algorithms (MLMs) and determining the best estimation algorithm. For this purpose, the movement directions of indexes such as the NYSE 100 (the USA), NIKKEI 225 (Japan), FTSE 100 (the UK), CAC 40 (France), DAX 30 (Germany), FTSE MIB (Italy), and TSX (Canada) were estimated by employing the decision tree, random forest k-nearest neighbor, naive Bayes, logistic regression, support vector machines and artificial neural network algorithms. According to the results obtained, artificial neural networks were found to be the best algorithm for NYSE 100, FTSE 100, DAX 30 and FTSE MIB indices, while logistic regression was determined to be the best algorithm for the NIKKEI 225, CAC 40, and TSX indices.

Split but merge: Golgi fragmentation in physiological and pathological conditions.

Mol Biol Rep

January 2024

Faculty of Medicine, Department of Medical Biology, Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey.

The Golgi complex is a highly dynamic and tightly regulated cellular organelle with essential roles in the processing as well as the sorting of proteins and lipids. Its structure undergoes rapid disassembly and reassembly during normal physiological processes, including cell division, migration, polarization, differentiation, and cell death. Golgi dispersal or fragmentation also occurs in pathological conditions, such as neurodegenerative diseases, infectious diseases, congenital disorders of glycosylation diseases, and cancer.

The incidence of infections caused by Candida species has significantly increased over the past three decades. Candida albicans is commonly recognized as the primary causative agent in cases of candidiasis; however, non-albicans Candida species, including Candida parapsilosis, are also frequently defined as pathogens. Treatment-resistant infections arise as a result of biofilm formation, which is one of the effective mechanisms in the pathogenesis of Candida infections.
