Association of MDR1 gene (C3435T) polymorphism and gene expression profiling in lung cancer patients treated with platinum-based chemotherapy.

Introduction: Chemotherapy is the standard and recommended treatment for lung cancer apart from surgery and radiotherapy. Chemotherapy is administered as mono-agents or as combination therapy. In this study, we examined the role of MDR1 C3435T polymorphisms in lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Non heamoptytic massive Rasmussen's pulmonary artery aneurysm caused by aggressive cavitating squamous cell carcinoma metastasis.

The authors report an extremely rare occurrence of a massive aneurysm of a major pulmonary artery branch vessel caused by adjacent necrotizing aggressive squamous cell carcinoma metastatic mediastinal nodes. Despite the huge size, there was no hemoptysis due to the walling off effect by the necrotic nodes.

Granulosa cell tumor induced massive recurrence of post hysterectomy leiomyoma.

The authors report a very unusual occurrence of a massive recurrence of leiomyoma from post hysterectomy stump diagnosed on fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (F-18-FDG PET/CT). The case also has an additional complexity of granulosa cell tumor (GCT) of ovary probably contributing to the recurrence and massive size.

P53 nuclear stabilization is associated with FHIT loss and younger age of onset in squamous cell carcinoma of oral tongue.

Background: Squamous cell carcinoma of tongue (SCCT) is expected to harbor unique clinico-pathological and molecular genetic features since a significant proportion of patients are young and exhibit no association with tobacco or alcohol.

Methods: We determined P53, epidermal growth factor receptor, microsatellite instability, human papilloma virus infection and loss of heterozygosity status at several tumor suppressor loci in one hundred and twenty one oral SCCT (SSCOT) samples and analyzed their association with clinico-pathological features and patient survival.

Results: Our results revealed a significantly higher incidence of p53 nuclear stabilization in early (as against late) onset SCCOT.

Report of chronic myeloid leukemia in chronic phase from Omega Hospital and Indo-American Centre, Hyderabad, 2004-2010.

Omega hospital and Indo-American Center from Hyderabad presented a data of 55 patients with chronic myeloid leukemia 87% (48) patients were in chronic phase. 5% (3) patients had primary resistance, while 64% (36) had shown good response to imatinib. At a median follow-up of 36 months 73% (40) of patients were in chronic phase.

Venous aneurysm complicating dialytic arteriovenous fistula.

A case of venous aneurysm complicating arteriovenous fistula created for chronic haemodialysis is presented. The patient underwent successful ligation and excision of the fistula and creation of a fistula on the opposite limb.

Metastatic squamous cell carcinoma thyroid from functionally cured cancer cervix.

The authors report a very unusual occurrence of a metastatic squamous carcinoma to thyroid gland from a treated squamous cell carcinoma cervix 12 years before with no recurrence at the primary site. The case also has an additional complexity of rapid progression of the metastatic thyroid carcinoma to wide spread dissemination to lungs and bones while on concurrent chemo radio therapy confirming the aggressiveness of the entity.

F18 FDG positron emission tomography revelation of primary testicular lymphoma with concurrent multiple extra nodal involvement.

Primary testicular lymphoma (PTL) a relatively rare disease of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas occurring with a lesser incidence of 1-2% has a propensity to occur at later ages above 50 years. PTL spreads to extra nodal sites due to deficiency of extra cellular adhesion molecules. We present detection of multiple sites of extra nodal involvement of PTL by F-18 positron emission tomography/computed tomography study aiding early detection of the dissemination thus aiding in staging and management.
