Article Synopsis
  • Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 has persisted in Egypt for nearly 20 years, significantly affecting poultry and public health, with Egypt being a key location for outbreaks in Africa.
  • This study aimed to analyze spatiotemporal patterns of HPAI H5N1 to identify high-risk areas at the subdistrict level and develop targeted interventions.
  • Results revealed that while Menofia wasn't the outbreak origin, rural areas showed increased risk, with urban areas experiencing lower outbreak densities, suggesting that urban centers could initially spread the virus, necessitating focused public health responses.

Article Synopsis
  • Pregnant rabbits face health challenges and oxidative stress in late pregnancy; this study tests garden cress seeds (GAC) as a natural antioxidant to improve reproductive outcomes and milk quality.
  • A total of 24 V-Line rabbits were divided into four groups, with one group receiving a regular diet and three groups receiving different percentages of GAC (3%, 4.5%, and 6%) over six weeks.
  • Results showed that while GAC did not significantly affect overall milk yield, the 3% GAC group had higher milk fat, improved serum proteins, and better immunity markers, suggesting that GAC at this level could be beneficial for lactating rabbits.

The purpose of this study is to investigate how a tracking indirect solar dryer (SD) powered by photovoltaic cells affected the drying kinetics (DK) and thermo-environmental conditions of tomato slices. In this current investigation, three air speeds (1, 1.5, and 2 m/s) are used, as well as three slice thicknesses (ST) (4, 6, and 8 mm) and two SD, one of which is integrated with fixed collector motion (FCM) and another with SD tracking collector motion (TCM).

Article Synopsis
  • The study addresses the challenge of variable solar radiation affecting the efficiency of solar dryers, especially for sensitive crops like basil leaves during winter.
  • A hybrid solar dryer (HSD) combining solar energy and liquid petroleum gas (LPG) was developed, featuring an automatic air circulation system to enhance drying efficiency and accommodate varying weather conditions.
  • Testing indicated that drying basil leaves at 60°C with a 90% air change rate significantly reduced drying time by up to 35.71% in summer and 35.56% in winter, while also improving energy consumption and product quality.

New sets of functionalized thiazolidinone and thiadiazole derivatives were synthesized, and their cytotoxicity was evaluated on HepG2, MCF-7, HTC-116, and WI38 cells. The synthetic approach is based on the preparation of 4-(4-acetamidophenyl)thiosemicarbazide (4) and their thiosemicarbazones 5 a-e, which are converted to the corresponding thiazoldin-4-one compounds 6 a-e upon cyclization with ethyl bromoacetate. The thiadiazole compounds 9 and 12 were obtained by reacting 4-(4-acetamidophenyl)thiosemicarbazide with isothiocyanates and/or ethyl 2-cyano-3,3-bis(methylthio)acrylate, respectively.

Dramatic metabolic changes during pregnancy and post-partum period resulted in alteration of the biochemical parameters in dromedary she-camels. The current study focused on assessment of stress indicators in post-partum dromedary she-camels on days 14, 28 and 42 post-calving through monitoring the clinical findings, serum steroid hormones, serum or milk oxidant/antioxidant indicators, and milk somatic cell count (SCC) status with reference to serum lipid profile changes. The study also stated several correlations between reproductive cyclicity parameters, stress biomarkers and serum-milk oxidant/antioxidant indicators.

Article Synopsis
  • Camel filariasis causes a range of symptoms in male camels, including fever, lethargy, skin lesions, and reproductive issues, making it important to differentiate between those with only balanoposthitis and those infected with filariasis.
  • The study analyzed 250 male camels across three groups and found significant differences in clinical and laboratory findings, especially in serum testosterone and testicular histopathology, indicating these as key diagnostic tools.
  • Results showed that camels with both balanoposthitis and filariasis had a higher severity of tick infestations and more pronounced clinical symptoms than those with only balanoposthitis, highlighting the complexity of diagnosing these conditions.

Synthetic organic insecticides such as pyrethroids, organophosphates, neonicotinoids, and others have the potential to disrupt ecosystems and are often toxic to humans. Thiamethoxam (TMX), a neonicotinoid insecticide , is a widely used insecticide with neurotoxic potential. L-Carnitine (LC) is regarded as the "gatekeeper" in charge of allowing long-chain fatty acids into cell mitochondria.

Electron ionization fragmentation studies for a series of 4-methoxymethylene benzoate esters.

Rapid Commun Mass Spectrom

December 2023

Department of Drug Discovery and Development, Harrison College of Pharmacy, Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama, USA.

Rationale: Product ion studies and stable isotope deuterium labeling experiments provide useful data for understanding the electron ionization (EI)-mass spectroscopy (MS) fragmentation of methoxymethylene substituted benzoate esters. The methoxymethylene ether is regioisomeric with the ethoxy group and represents the two possible ether substituents of a benzene ring of C H O. Structural confirmation of these synthetic precursor materials via gas chromatography (GC)-EI-MS revealed unexpected fragment ions.

High-strength grout is specified to increase the bond between grout and bar in grouted connections and to ensure that the forces in the bars can be transferred to the surrounding material accordingly. Although polymer grout is fast setting and rapid in strength development, the use of polymer mortar in grouted connections is still limited because of the lack of information and familiarity practitioners have regarding the product. The goal of this work is to investigate the mechanical characteristics and performance of polyester grout containing fly ash that can be used as an infill material for grouted connections.
