Laparoscopic TAPP (Trans-Abdominal PrePeritoneal) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to repair inguinal hernias. Arguably, one important aspect to TAPP hernia repair is the identification of anatomical landmarks and the correct use of various laparoscopic instruments. There are very few studies regarding the use of artificial intelligence in laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair and more specifically in TAPP.

Background: Older patients with malignancies are more comorbid than younger ones and are usually undertreated only because of their age. The aim of this study is to investigate the safety of open anatomical lung resections for lung cancer in elderly patients.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed all patients who underwent lung resection for lung cancer in our institution and categorized them into two groups: the elderly group (≥70 years old) and the control (<70).

Article Synopsis
  • Hymenoptera stings, like those from wasps and bees, can lead to serious allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), but localized symptoms like swelling and redness are more frequent, especially in kids.
  • A focused sting, particularly in the throat or airway area, can become extremely dangerous, even if it seems minor.
  • The case presented involves a child who experienced multiple wasp stings in a critical area called the supraglottis, highlighting the potential severity of such incidents.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the impact of golimumab on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and other patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) over a 12-month period.
  • The primary measure of improvement included significant increases in the EQ-5D-3L index and various domains of the Work Productivity and Activity Index for RA, indicating enhanced HRQoL and physical function.
  • Additionally, a notable portion of patients achieved remission or low disease activity, and adherence to golimumab treatment was high throughout the study.

Purpose: To examine the impact of golimumab, on work productivity, activity limitation, and quality of life (QoL) in patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA).

Methods: This real-world, multicenter, prospective study consecutively enrolled adult consented work-active patients with axSpA or PsA, newly initiated on golimumab as per the approved label. Prior receipt of > 1 prior biologic, or switching from another tumor-necrosis factor inhibitor due to primary non-response or safety reasons was not allowed.

Renal cell carcinoma has a high propensity for metastatic spread. There are several case reports of metastatic renal cell carcinomas associated with rare metastatic sites, in many cases more than ten years after the initial diagnosis. We present a 60-year-old man with perianal pain and a mass in the ischiorectal space, revealed by computed tomography.

Background: Use of LMWH in pregnancy is not only limited to VTE management, but it extends, to the management of vascular gestational complications and the optimization of IVF pregnancies despite the lack of concrete scientific evidence. In this context, we conducted the present study aiming to gain insights regarding the use of LMWH during pregnancy and puerperium. We recorded indication for use, diagnostic work-up as well as the safety and efficacy of the treatment, trying to elucidate the clinical practice in our country.

The utility of peripheral blood leucocyte ratios as biomarkers in infectious diseases: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

J Infect

May 2019

Division of Genetics and Genomics, The Roslin Institute, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK; Intensive Care Unit, Royal Infirmary Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK.

Objectives: To assess the utility of the neutrophil:lymphocyte (NLR), lymphocyte:monocyte (LMR) and platelet:lymphocyte ratios (PLR) as infection biomarkers.

Methods: PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase and Cochrane databases were searched to identify eligible articles. Studies of diagnosis, severity or outcome were included.

Aim: To report the clinical features and surgical outcomes of one patient with heavy eye syndrome who underwent bilateral, unaugmented, full loop myopexy.

Methods: A 47-year-old lady with high myopia, high axial length, progressive esotropia, slippage of the lateral rectus (LR) inferiorly and superior rectus (SR) medially on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was diagnosed with heavy eye syndrome. Unaugmented loop myopexy without medial rectus (MR) recession was offered.

Computer assisted surgical planning allowed for a better selection of patients, evaluation of operative strategy, appropriate volumetric measurements, identification of anatomical risks, definition of tumour resection margins and choice of surgical approach in liver oncologic resections and living donor liver transplantations. Although preoperative computer surgical analysis has been widely used in daily clinical practice, intraoperative computer assisted solutions for risk analysis and navigation in liver surgery are not widely available or still under clinical evaluation. Computer science technology can efficiently assist modern surgeons during complex liver operations, mainly by providing image guidance with individualized 2D images and 3D models of the various anatomical and pathological structures of interest.

Subclavian Steal Syndrome with or without Arterial Stenosis: A Review.

J Neuroimaging

September 2016

Second Department of Neurology, "Attikon" Hospital, School of Medicine, University of Athens, Athens, Greece.

The subclavian-vertebral artery steal syndrome (SSS) is the hemodynamic phenomenon of blood flow reversal in the vertebral artery due to significant stenosis or occlusion of the proximal subclavian artery or the innominate artery. Occasionally, SSS is diagnosed in patients not harboring arterial stenosis. With the exception of arterial congenital malformations, the limited case reports of SSS with intact subclavian artery are attributed to dialysis arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs).

Metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma confers a poor prognosis. Even with recent advances in the treatment of this disease with the introduction of two modestly effective chemotherapy regimens, complete responses are still very rare. Moreover, there are no published data on how to further manage the patients who achieve a sustained remission following treatment.
