Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on comparing blood parameters in children with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disorders (MOGAD), AQP4-IgG-positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD), multiple sclerosis (MS), and healthy controls to better understand disease activity.
  • Researchers analyzed complete blood counts and various ratios (like NLR and PLR) during different disease phases: clinical attack, acute treatment, and remission across a cohort of 174 children and adolescents.
  • Key findings revealed elevated leukocyte counts in MOGAD during clinical attacks, while other blood parameters like NLR and PLR showed different trends, suggesting these measures could aid in assessing disease activity and distinguishing between disease

Introduction: High-dose methotrexate (HDMTX) is administered for the treatment of some malignancies. Serious complications after the administration of HDMTX are rare, but occasionally MTX may precipitate in the renal tubes causing a delayed elimination leading to renal, multiorgan toxicities and to life-threatening complications. This study aims to estimate the incidence and clinical management of delayed MTX elimination in France, Germany, Italy, and the UK.

Aim: We explored whether subnormal forced expiratory volume within 1 s (FEV ) at 5-9 years of age was lower in children born preterm who received less invasive surfactant administration (LISA) rather than surfactant via an endotracheal tube.

Methods: The multi-centre, randomised Nonintubated Surfactant Application trial enrolled 211 preterm infants born at 23-26 weeks of gestation from 13 level III neonatal intensive care units from April 2009 to March 2012. They received surfactant via LISA (n = 107) or after conventional endotracheal intubation (n = 104).

Background: For paediatric chronic pain patients, intensive interdisciplinary pain treatment (IIPT) is a well-established treatment. The treatment's short-term effectiveness can be improved by an additive psychosocial aftercare (PAC). However, neither the program's long-term effectiveness nor the patients in particular need have been investigated yet.

Article Synopsis
  • A specialized psychosocial aftercare program (PAC) for pediatric patients with chronic pain shows significant effectiveness compared to intensive interdisciplinary pain treatment (IIPT) alone.
  • The study involved structured interviews with patients, parents, and healthcare professionals, leading to the identification of four major themes related to the program's success, including frame conditions, person factors, stabilization, and catalysts.
  • The findings highlight the importance of flexibility, respect, and security in treatment, and suggest that these insights can help improve future aftercare programs in psychosocial healthcare.

Background: Ulnar humeral condyle fractures are rare paediatric elbow fractures, classified as Salter-Harris IV paediatric elbow injuries. Due to constant radiological changes in the elbow with varying manifestation of ossification centres as well as late ossification of the trochlea, diagnosis of these injuries is challenging. To avoid long-term complications, the treating surgeon should be familiar with the rare injury picture, diagnostics and adequate therapeutic measures.

Epidemiology of Pediatric NMOSD in Germany and Austria.

Front Neurol

May 2020

Department of Pediatric Neurology, Children's Hospital Datteln, University Witten/Herdecke, Datteln, Germany.

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) are severe inflammatory demyelinating disorders of the central nervous system mainly characterized by recurrent episodes of uni- or bilateral optic neuritis (ON), transverse myelitis (TM) and brainstem syndromes (BS). The majority of adult patients has serum antibodies directed against the water channel protein aquaporin 4 (AQP4-abs). In pediatric patients, AQP4-abs are less, while antibodies against myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG-abs) are more frequently detectable than in adults.
