Mitochondrial ATP production and calcium buffering are critical for metabolic regulation and neurotransmission making the formation and maintenance of the mitochondrial network a critical component of neuronal health. Cortical pyramidal neurons contain compartment-specific mitochondrial morphologies that result from distinct axonal and dendritic mitochondrial fission and fusion profiles. We previously showed that axonal mitochondria are maintained at a small size as a result of high axonal mitochondrial fission factor (Mff) activity.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) poses significant risks for solid organ transplant recipients, who have atypical but poorly characterized immune responses to infection. We aim to understand the host immunologic and microbial features of COVID-19 in transplant recipients by leveraging a prospective multicenter cohort of 86 transplant recipients age- and sex-matched with 172 non-transplant controls. We find that transplant recipients have higher nasal SARS-CoV-2 viral abundance and impaired viral clearance, and lower anti-spike IgG levels.

Assessing Social Determinants of Health During Critical Illness: Implications and Methodologies.

Crit Care Clin

October 2024

Section of Critical Care, Department of Pediatrics, Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center, 1100 North Lindsay Avenue, Oklahoma City, OK 73104, USA.

A growing body of literature has identified social determinants of health (SDoH) as potential contributors to health disparities in pediatric critical illness. Pediatric critical care providers should use validated screening tools to identify unmet social needs and ensure appropriate referral through multisector partnerships. Pediatric critical care researchers should consider factors outside of race and insurance status and explore the association between neighborhood-level factors and disparate health outcomes during critical illness.

Purpose: The specialty of Laboratory Genetics and Genomics (LGG) was created in 2017 in an effort to reflect the increasing convergence in technologies and approaches between clinical molecular genetics and clinical cytogenetics. However, there has not yet been any formal evaluation of the merging of these disciplines and the challenges faced by Program Directors (PDs) tasked with ensuring the successful training of laboratory geneticists under the new model.

Methods: An electronic multi-question Qualtrics survey was created and was sent to the PD for each of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited LGG fellowship programs at the time.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at veterans with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) to understand what factors affect their survival and health over time.
  • Most veterans got ALS around age 62, and on average, they lived about 4 years after symptoms started. Many had limb-onset ALS, which means it started affecting their arms and legs first.
  • It was found that those with a family history of ALS, or whose ALS started in their speech or breathing, tended to live shorter lives compared to others.

  • Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) can be transmitted to infants through breast milk, having potential health impacts, especially on preterm and immunocompromised infants, while effects on healthy term infants are generally considered harmless.
  • A study investigating breast milk from breastfeeding full-term mother-infant pairs revealed that CMV-infected milk showed changes in the metabolome and transcriptome, including the upregulation of a specific metabolic pathway.
  • Findings indicate that CMV-associated changes in breast milk composition might influence infant gut microbiome and growth, with varying effects on infant weight related to components in the milk.
