Canine leptospirosis, which is caused by infection with pathogenic Leptospira species, occurs worldwide, but information regarding the causative Leptospira serotypes and genotypes and their effects on virulence in dogs remains limited. Monitoring acute leptospirosis in dogs as sentinels can also aid in estimating the risk of human leptospirosis, particularly when the disease is rare, as it currently is in Japan. Among 283 clinically suspected cases of leptospirosis diagnosed from August 2007 to March 2011 in Japan, 83 cases were laboratory diagnosed as leptospirosis by blood culture, a rise in antibody titres in paired sera using a microscopic agglutination test (MAT) and/or DNA detection using flaB-nested PCR.

To clarify the molecular epidemiology of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Okinawa Prefecture, located in a subtropical region of Japan, we performed genetic analysis of the F gene in HMPV from patients with acute respiratory infection from January 2009 to December 2011. HMPV was detected in 18 of 485 throat swabs (3.7%).

Toxoplasma gondii genotypes were isolated and characterized from cephalic muscle samples collected from 24 goats slaughtered at an abattoir in Okinawa between 2008 and 2009. Of the 24 samples assayed using latex agglutination, 18 were seropositive, 2 were pseudo-positive, and 4 were seronegative against T. gondii antibodies.

Okinawa being located in the subtropical region has the highest incidence of ciguatera in Japan. Officially, 33 outbreaks involving 103 patients have been reported between 1997 and 2006. The implicated species were Variola louti, Lutjanus bohar, Lutjanus monostigma, Epinephelus fuscoguttatus, unidentified Lutjanus sp.

Serum specimens were collected from 125 pigs on Miyako Island, 112 pigs on Ishigaki Island, and 42 pigs on Kume Island from 2005 to 2007, and 54 pigs on Yonaguni Island from 2006 to 2007. Their sera were tested for Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) antibody by hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay. Five serum samples (4.

A husband and wife successively visited an emergency room with symptoms of staggering, slurred speech, mydriasis, and drowsiness, three hours after separately eating spaghetti with meat sauce. The sauce contained eggplant that had been grafted onto a Devil's trumpet, Datura metel. Scopolamine and atropine were detected in the leftover sauce and in the sera of the patients.

Caulerpa lentillifera is a kind of edible seaweed, known as 'sea grape' or 'green caviar'. It is used in fresh salads. However, it is sensitive to low temperature and osmotic pressure, and is easily spoilt by storage in a refrigerator or washing with tap water.

Human monoclonal antibodies (HuMAbs) against HR1a from Protobothrops (formerly Trimeresurus) flavoviridis venom were obtained by the fusion of SP2/0-Ag14 myeloma cells and spleen cells from KM mice immunized with purified HR1a. The ability of HuMAbs to neutralize the HR1a was determined by in vitro neutralization assay and by neutralization of the hemorrhagic activity. The initial screening of over 300 hybridoma fusion wells resulted in the establishment of 80 HR1a-reactive hybridomas.

To characterize Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) strains recently prevalent in Japan, JEV surveillance was performed in pigs from 2002 to 2004. Eleven new JEV isolates were obtained and compared with previous isolates from Japan and other Asian countries. All of the isolates were classified into genotype 1 by nucleotide sequence analysis of the E gene.

Salmonella enterica strains isolated in Okinawa between 1995 and 2005 were analyzed with respect to their serovars and antimicrobial susceptibility, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was used to examine their digestion patterns. A total of 1,071 isolates, including 610 from humans, 358 from animal rectal swabs and 103 from meat obtained at grocery stores, were examined. The first 3 most frequent serovars in human isolates were Enteritidis, Weltevreden and Bareilly, together accounting for 65% of the isolates.

In the summer of 2003, sporadic cases and an outbreak of human leptospirosis probably related to recreation in rivers occurred in the northern part of Okinawa Main Island. Sixteen of 22 suspected cases were definitely diagnosed as leptospirosis by serological test or isolation. The infective leptospiral serovar in 14 cases was presumed to be Hebdomadis.

Dimerumic acid inhibited NADPH- and iron(II)-dependent lipid peroxidation (LPO) of rat liver microsomes at 20 and 200 microM, respectively. When ferrylmyoglobin was incubated with dimerumic acid, the myoglobin was scavenged and an electron spin resonance (ESR) signal with nine peaks was observed.

The surveillance of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) caused by enterovirus 70 (EV70) is insufficient because of the difficulties of virus isolation using conventional methods. In this study, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and stringent microplate hybridization (SMH) methods were assessed for the detection of EV70 in conjunctival swabs collected from the patients of AHC which broke out in Miyazaki Prefecture in 1990 and Okinawa Prefecture in 1994. Furthermore, with the use of the SMH method, we compared the genetic homogeneity of EV70 detected from the samples collected in 1990 and 1994 to the J670/71 strain isolated approximately 25 years ago.
