Article Synopsis
  • * Certain receptors (AHRs) are activated by these external factors and play a role in regulating skin cell function through the AKR1C3 gene, which is important for skin cell differentiation.
  • * A study found specific gene variations (SNPs) in AKR1C3 to be more common in Japanese psoriasis patients, especially in younger females, suggesting that these variations may lead to lower gene expression and contribute to the development of psoriasis by affecting how skin cells mature and function.

High preoperative serum strontium levels increase the risk of acute kidney injury after cardiopulmonary bypass.

Clin Exp Nephrol

April 2023

Department of Hospital Pharmacy, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nagoya City University, 3-1 Tanabe Do-Ri, Mizuho-Ku, Nagoya, 467-8603, Japan.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication of cardiac surgeries. The incidence of AKI after cardiac surgeries using cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB-AKI) is high, emphasizing the need to determine strategies to prevent CPB-AKI. This study investigates the correlation between CPB-AKI and trace metal levels in clinical and animal studies.

Risk score for predicting death from other causes after curative gastrectomy for gastric cancer.

Gastric Cancer

March 2023

Department of Gastroenterological Surgery (Surgery II), Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine, 65, Tsurumai-Cho, Showa-Ku, Nagoya, 466-8550, Japan.

Background: The number of patients who die from causes other than gastric cancer after R0 resection is increasing in Japan, due in part to the aging population. However, few studies have comprehensively investigated the clinicopathological risks associated with deaths from other causes after gastrectomy. This study aimed to build a risk score for predicting such deaths.

Previous studies have suggested that change-related cortical responses are phenomena similar to the onset response and could be applied to the loudness dependence of auditory evoked potential (LDAEP) paradigm. In the present study, we examined the relationship between LDAEP and the change-related response using electroencephalography findings in 50 healthy subjects. There were five conditions (55, 65, 75, 85, and 95 dB) for LDAEP and five similar conditions (abrupt sound pressure increase from 70 to 75, 80, 85, 90, and 95 dB) for the change-related response.

We report the case of a rare lipoma arising in the epidural space of a 14-year-old boy without spinal dysraphism. Lipomas are rare in pediatric soft tissue tumors, accounting for only about 4% of cases. The incidence of an intraspinal epidural lipoma without spinal dysraphism is extremely rare in pediatric patients.

IgG4-related inflammatory pseudotumor is a feature of IgG4-related disease and develops in various organs. Intracranial IgG4-related inflammatory pseudotumor is rare, and data on the clinical course and response to treatment are insufficient in the literature. We herein report a patient with IgG4-related inflammatory pseudotumor who had magnetic resonance imaging findings similar to meningioma.

Objective Muscle atrophy is observed in a subset of patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP). Its manifestation is associated with a poor functional prognosis and poor response to immunomodulatory therapies. We evaluated muscle atrophy in patients with CIDP using a bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA).

Article Synopsis
  • Affinos, a bone substitute made of β-tricalcium phosphate with a special porous structure, was evaluated for its effectiveness in healing bone defects among 56 patients by comparing two groups based on the type of bone involved.
  • The study found that both the resorption of Affinos and trabeculation (the formation of new bone) improved over time, with significant correlations indicating that early changes in these parameters could predict long-term healing outcomes.
  • Key findings suggest that smaller defect sizes and higher resorption rates shortly after surgery were linked to better long-term healing in both groups, and specific bone metabolic markers were also assessed to enhance understanding of the healing process.

Objectives: To describe clinical features and laboratory data of myocarditis after the mRNA COVID-19 vaccine in children.

Methods: We reviewed patients younger than 18 years of age, who visited our hospital because of myocarditis within 1 week after BNT162b2 from June 2021 to January 2022.

Results: We identified five male patients aged 12-16 years who presented to our hospital with myocarditis within 2-3 days after the second dose of BNT162b2 COVID-19 vaccination between June 2021 and January 2022.

Background: The incidence of pulmonary hypertension (PH) associated with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) has not been investigated in regional cohorts. The aim of this study was to clarify the incidence of PH associated with BPD in all very low birthweight infants (VLBWIs) born during the study period in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational cohort study of all VLBWIs born in Aichi Prefecture.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated how serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels changed in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients before and after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), focusing on 173 patients and their 228 knees between 2006 and 2018.
  • The research found that CRP levels are significantly elevated post-surgery, peaking at days 3-4 and returning to preoperative levels by day 14.
  • Key factors linked to changes in CRP levels included body mass index (BMI) ≥25 and glucocorticoid usage, while other treatments like methotrexate didn't show a significant impact.

Distal transradial approach (dTRA) for neuroendovascular procedures has received much attention in recent years as a newer and less invasive alternative to the conventional transfemoral or transradial approaches. We present the case of an 89-year-old woman with a basilar artery aneurysm requiring simultaneous catheterization of the bilateral vertebral arteries who was successfully embolized using bilateral dTRA. The aneurysm was accessed from the right vertebral artery using the right dTRA.

Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis is a systemic disorder that frequently affects the peripheral nervous system and consists of three distinct conditions: microscopic polyangiitis (MPA), granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA, previously Wegener's granulomatosis), and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA, previously Churg-Strauss syndrome). The neuropathic features associated with this condition usually include mononeuritis multiplex, which reflects the locality of lesions. Findings suggestive of vasculitis are usually found in the epineurium and occur diffusely throughout the nerve trunk.

Background: Acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion (AESD) is a common type of acute encephalopathy in Japan; the condition is clinically characterized by prolonged seizures as the initial neurological symptom, followed by late seizures 4-6 days later. It is difficult to differentiate AESD from prolonged febrile seizures (PFSs). Here, we explored the use of electroencephalography to differentiate AESD from PFSs.
