Functional Ingredients Associated with the Prevention and Suppression of Locomotive Syndrome: A Review.

Biol Pharm Bull

December 2024

Department of Molecular Immunology, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Fukuyama University.

In 2007, the Japanese Orthopaedic Association proposed the concept of locomotive syndrome, a comprehensive description of conditions involving the functional decline of the locomotor system. Locomotive syndrome includes bone-related diseases such as osteoporosis, joint cartilage and disc-related diseases such as osteoarthritis and lumbar spondylosis, and sarcopenia and locomotive syndrome-related diseases. If left untreated, these diseases are likely to reduce mobility, necessitating nursing care.

Trans-resveratrol (Res) has been reported to possess many biological activities, including neuroprotective effects, owing to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. However, Res has very low water solubility, which limits its therapeutic application. In this work, we formulated water-soluble micellar formulations incorporating Res using polyethylene glycol monostearate (stPEG).

Microvascular decompression (MVD) has proven efficacy in trigeminal neuralgia (TN) and hemifacial spasm (HFS). This study utilized computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to investigate the impact of MVD on wall shear stress (WSS) of responsible arteries (RAs) at the neurovascular contact (NVC). A total of 21 cases (10 TN, 11 HFS) were analyzed, involving RAs at NVC validated through intraoperative photographs.

Double-leg circles on pommel horse exercises require a high degree of dynamic balance. However, theoretical conditions for maintaining dynamic balance are unclear. The purpose of this paper is to propose a simple theoretical model of the dynamic balance of the circles, and to illustrate its qualitative properties.

May 2024

Center for Basic Research on Materials, and Division of International Collaborations and Public Relations, National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Tsukuba, Japan.

Since carbon (C) atom has a variety of chemical bonds hybridization between s and p atomic orbitals, it is well known that there are robust carbon materials. In particular, discovery of C has been an epoch making to cultivate nanocarbon fields. Since then, nanocarbon materials such as nanotube and graphene have been reported.

Background: Having higher muscle mass in early adulthood is an important factor in preventing sarcopenia. However, university students undergo lifestyle changes compared to their high school years, which may lead to changes in body composition, such as an increase in body fat and a decrease in muscle mass. The study aimed to investigate the association between body composition and lifestyle behaviors, including chronotype, among Japanese female university students, due to the prevalence of underweight among young females in the country.

Behavior of Hydrolyzable Tannins after Oral Administration of the Extract to Rats.

J Agric Food Chem

April 2024

Division of Nutritional Science, Graduate School of Health and Welfare Science, Okayama Prefectural University, Soja, Okayama 719-1197, Japan.

The pericarp extract of (TBPE), which is rich in hydrolyzable tannins, has been reported to inhibit α-glucosidase and glycation reactions. We investigated the behavior of hydrolyzable tannins and related metabolites after administration of TBPE to rats. Using high pressure liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectroscopy (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS), 12 ellagitannin metabolites, such as urolithins and 6 gallotannin metabolites, produced in the collected plasma and urine were quantified.

Enhancing Diagnostic Precision: Evaluation of Preprocessing Filters in Simple Diffusion Kurtosis Imaging for Head and Neck Tumors.

J Clin Med

March 2024

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Okayama University, Okayama 700-8558, Japan.

Our initial clinical study using simple diffusion kurtosis imaging (SDI), which simultaneously produces a diffusion kurtosis image (DKI) and an apparent diffusion coefficient map, confirmed the usefulness of SDI for tumor diagnosis. However, the obtained DKI had noticeable variability in the mean kurtosis (MK) values, which is inherent to SDI. We aimed to improve this variability in SDI by preprocessing with three different filters (Gaussian [G], median [M], and nonlocal mean) of the diffusion-weighted images used for SDI.

Bone density estimation using tissue heat capacity.

Clin Anat

May 2024

Department of Nursing Science, Faculty of Health and Welfare Science, Okayama Prefectural University, Okayama, Japan.

Osteoporosis onset is relatively asymptomatic, the condition often being identified only once a significant fracture occurs, leading to a potentially serious prognosis. Currently, early identification of osteoporosis is complicated by the difficulty in measuring bone density without using x-ray absorptiometry or quantitative ultrasound, so a simpler method for estimating bone density is needed. Given that bone is reported to have a lower specific heat than other tissues, we investigated the possibility of estimating bone density using this difference in tissue thermal properties.

2--Alkyl-l-ascorbic acids and 3--alkyl-l-ascorbic acids were synthesized, and their degranulation inhibitory activities were evaluated. Among ascorbic acid derivatives with butyl, octyl, dodecyl, hexadecyl, and octadecyl groups introduced at the C-2 or C-3 positions, an AA derivative with a dodecyl group introduced at the C-3 position, 3--dodecyl-l-ascorbic acid (compound ), showed the strongest inhibitory activity against antigen-stimulated degranulation. Compound also inhibited calcium ionophore-stimulated degranulation.
