Background/aim: Atezolizumab plus bevacizumab (Atez/Bev) treatment is recommended for unresechepatocellular carcinoma (u-HCC) patients classified as Child-Pugh A (CP-A). This study aimed to elucidate the prognosis of patients treated with Atez/Bev, especially CP-A and -B cases.
Materials/methods: From September 2020 to March 2022, 457 u-HCC patients treated with Atez/Bev were enrolled (median age 74 years, male:female = 368:89, CP-A:CP-B = 427:30, Child-Pugh score [CPS] 5:6:7:8:9 = 271:156:21:8:1).

We investigated the impact of C-reactive protein to albumin ratio (CAR) on predicting outcomes in 522 patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated with lenvatinib. We determined the optimal CAR cutoff value with time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. Additionally, we clarified the relationship between CAR and liver function or HCC progression.

Progression-free survival in patients with untreated follicular lymphoma (FL) has significantly improved with obinutuzumab plus chemotherapy followed by obinutuzumab maintenance, compared with rituximab plus chemotherapy. However, the survival outcome and adverse event profile in Japanese FL patients treated with obinutuzumab plus bendamustine (GB) therapy are not well investigated. Recently, we encountered some cases of grade 3-4 thrombocytopenia during GB therapy in patients with FL.

Aim: To evaluate the effect of canagliflozin, a sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, on albuminuria and the decline of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in participants with type 2 diabetes and microalbuminuria.
Methods: The CANPIONE study is a multicentre, randomized, parallel-group and open-labelled study consisting of a unique 24-week preintervention period, during which the rate of eGFR decline before intervention is estimated, followed by a 52-week intervention and a 4-week washout period. Participants with a geometric mean urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) of 50 and higher and less than 300 mg/g in two consecutive first-morning voids at two different time points, and an eGFR of 45 ml/min/1.

Aim: The safety and efficacy of atezolizumab plus bevacizumab (Atez/Bev) in elderly patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have not been sufficiently investigated.
Methods: A total of 317 patients with HCC treated with Atez/Bev were studied. We compared the survival and frequency of adverse events in elderly versus non-elderly patients with HCC who were treated with Atez/Bev using an analysis of inverse probability weighting (IPW).

Objective Although Barrett's adenocarcinoma (BA) remains a minor disease in Japan, its incidence has been gradually increasing. We analyzed the characteristics of BA in Japanese populations. Methods We retrospectively reviewed medical records and analyzed the clinicopathological differences between short-segment Barrett's esophagus (SSBE) and long-segment Barrett's esophagus (LSBE), as well as metastasis.

Background: Meningiomas are occasionally fed by pial blood supply (PBS). It is postulated that peritumoral flow void (PTFV), peritumoral brain edema (PTBE), and absence of an arachnoid plane (AP) are useful parameters for evaluating PBS.
Purpose: To determine whether conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using a multiparametric scoring system (MSS) is a useful way to predict PBS.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) predominantly affects elderly adults, and its prognosis worsens with age. Treatment options for patients in Japan ineligible for intensive chemotherapy include cytarabine/aclarubicin ± granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (CA ± G), azacitidine (AZA), low-dose cytarabine (LDAC), targeted therapy, and best supportive care (BSC). The country's aging population and the evolving treatment landscape are contributing to a need to understand treatment pathways and associated outcomes.

Intractable arteriovenous access (AVA)-related pain can not only lead to abandonment of a well-functioning AVA, but can also cause hemodialysis (HD) patients to be unwilling to accept, interrupt, or withdraw from HD. Such pain primarily derives from nociceptive and neuropathic factors caused by mechanical stimulation of needle cannulation; however, this might be related to psychosocial factors making it difficult for patients to accept their dependency on HD. Furthermore, the pain can be complicated by the interaction of biological and psychosocial factors, which hampers appropriate pain management and treatment.

Purpose: To clarify the clinical and microbial characteristics of polymicrobial bacteremia (PMB) to contribute to improvements in clinical diagnosis and effective early treatment.
Methods: This retrospective multicenter study used data from three acute-care hospitals in Okayama Prefecture, Japan, collected between January 2014 and March 2019. We reviewed the demographics, comorbidities, organisms isolated, infectious focus, and 30-day mortality of patients with PMB.

Aims: Sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors have diuretic effects in both patients with glycosuria and with natriuresis. We sought to assess the effect of luseogliflozin on estimated plasma volume (ePV) in patients with type 2 diabetes and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).
Methods And Results: This study was a post-hoc analysis of the MUSCAT-HF trial (UMIN000018395), a multicentre, prospective, open-label, randomized controlled trial that assessed the effect of 12 weeks of luseogliflozin (2.

Committee for Response Evaluation Criteria in Cancer of the Liver, Liver Cancer Study Group of Japan, Osaka-Sayama, Japan.
Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) is inappropriate to assess the direct effects of treatment on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by locoregional therapies, such as radiofrequency ablation or transarterial chemoembolization. Therefore, establishment of response evaluation criteria solely devoted to HCC is needed in clinical practice, as well as in clinical trials of HCC treatment, such as systemic therapies, which cause necrosis of the tumor. Response Evaluation Criteria in Cancer of the Liver (RECICL) was revised in 2021 by the Liver Cancer Study Group of Japan based on the 2019 version of RECICL, which was commonly used in Japan.

Background And Aim: Serum glycans are known to be good markers for the early diagnosis and prognostic prediction in many cancers. The aims of this study were to reveal the serum glycan changes comprehensively during the process of carcinogenesis from colorectal adenoma (CRA) to colorectal cancer (CRC) and to evaluate the usefulness of the glycan profiles as clinical markers for CRC.
Methods: Serum samples were obtained from 80 histologically proven CRC and 36 CRA cases.

Purpose: Our goal was to evaluate the long-term prognostic value of magnetic resonance imaging of the prostatectomy bed in patients with biochemical recurrence after radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer.
Materials And Methods: Men with biochemical recurrence after radical prostatectomy who were studied by prostatectomy bed magnetic resonance imaging for suspected local recurrence were retrospectively evaluated. Locally recurrent tumors were noted and measured from imaging reports.
