Purpose: Patients with liver metastasis of head-and-neck carcinoma and esophageal carcinoma are generally not treated with hepatic resection, but there are no established standard treatment methods. We report 11 cases of hepatic resection for liver metastasis of head-and-neck carcinoma or esophageal carcinoma performed at 5 Japanese institutions.
Methods: The subjects of this retrospective analysis were 11 patients who underwent hepatic resection for metastatic liver tumors, originating from head-and-neck carcinoma in 5 and from esophageal cancer in 6, between January, 2010 and March, 2020 RESULTS: There were nine men and two women (median age, 64 years; range 40-72 years).

Papillary renal neoplasm with reverse polarity (PRNRP) is a recently proposed entity of renal tumor. It shows a far better prognosis than papillary renal cell carcinoma (PRCC) and frequently has KRAS missense mutation. In this study, we compared 14 cases of PRNRP and 10 cases of PRCC type 1 (PRCC1) and type 2 (PRCC2) from clinical, morphological, immunohistochemical, and molecular biological perspectives.

Importance: In distal pancreatectomy (DP), the splenic vein is isolated from the pancreatic parenchyma prior to being ligated and divided to prevent intra-abdominal hemorrhage from the splenic vein stump with pancreatic fistula (PF). Conversely, dissecting the splenic vein with the pancreatic parenchyma is easy and time-saving.
Objective: To establish the safety of combined division of the splenic vein compared with separate division of the splenic vein.

Background: The transcription factor capicua (CIC) regulates mammalian development and homeostasis. Growing evidence shows that CIC suppresses various human cancers by directly repressing the downstream cancer-related target genes. This study investigated the clinical and biologic significance of CIC expression in pancreatic cancer (PC).

Background/aim: Hepatic encephalopathy is an adverse event resulting from lenvatinib use in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We analyzed the influence of lenvatinib on portal venous flow velocity (PVV) and serum ammonia concentration.
Patients And Methods: Eleven patients with unresectable HCC were enrolled, including three with modified albumin-bilirubin (mALBI) grade 1, three with grade 2a, and five with grade 2b.

Background/objectives: 8-Hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) is an indicator of oxidative stress and causes transversion mutations and carcinogenesis. 8-OHdG is excision repaired by 8-OHdG DNA glycosylase 1 (OGG1), which is classified as nuclear and mitochondrial subtypes. We aimed to clarify the role of OGG1 in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC).

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the long-term outcomes of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy with S-1 in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer.
Methods: A multi-institutional, prospective, phase II trial was conducted between April 2009 and August 2011. The study enrolled 37 patients with histologically proven rectal carcinoma (T3-4 N0-3 M0) who underwent neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy with S-1.

White opaque substance (WOS) in gastric epithelial neoplasia is helpful for qualitative diagnosis of neoplasia. We hypothesized that WOS of neoplasia is strongly influenced by acid recovery after eradication, similar to that of gastric intestinal metaplasia. The aim of this study was to investigate whether antacids increase the appearance of the WOS in -eradicated neoplasia.

Backgrounds: Distal pancreatectomy with en bloc celiac axis resection (DP-CAR) is an extended surgical procedure for patients with locally advanced cancer of the pancreatic body and tail. Recently, the usability of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in pancreatic cancer was reported. The purpose of this study was to clarify the impact of NAC on surgical outcomes and prognosis in DP-CAR patients.

Aim: Rescue therapy for patients with genotype 2 (GT2) chronic hepatitis C who failed prior sofosbuvir (SOF) plus ribavirin (RBV) awaits establishment. This study aims to investigate the efficacy and safety of the fixed-dose combination of glecaprevir (300 mg)/pibrentasvir (120 mg) (GLE/PIB) for patients with GT2 chronic hepatitis C.
Methods: In this nationwide observational study undertaken by the Japanese Red Cross Liver Study Group, 28 GT2 patients with prior failure of SOF + RBV were retreated with GLE/PIB for 12 weeks.

Aim: The present study aimed to determine the real-world efficacy and safety of the non-structural protein (NS)5A inhibitor elbasvir (EBR) combined with the NS3/4A protease inhibitor grazoprevir (GZR) in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 (GT1) infection.
Methods: This study retrospectively evaluated the rate of sustained virologic response at 12 weeks post-treatment (SVR12) and the safety of EBR/GZR treatment in 159 men and 194 women with a median age of 72 years, and it assessed factors associated with the SVR12 rate. The attending physicians were responsible for selecting candidate patients for EBR/GZR in this retrospective study.

Background: After initial pancreatic resection, local recurrence of pancreatic cancer (PC) or new primary PC can develop in the remnant. There are limited data available regarding this so-called remnant PC. The aim of this retrospective study was to clarify the clinical features and establish a treatment strategy for remnant PC.

Background: In our previous randomised phase 2 study for patients with gemcitabine-refractory advanced pancreatic cancer, S-1 plus leucovorin improved progression-free survival compared with S-1 alone. Here, we evaluated the efficacy of TAS-118 (S-1 plus leucovorin) versus S-1 in overall survival (OS).
Patients And Methods: This randomised, open-label, phase 3 study was conducted at 58 centres in Japan and Korea.

Objectives: Platinum-based combination chemotherapy is the standard postoperative adjuvant treatment for pathological stage II/III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Oral S-1 therapy has good efficacy and relatively low toxicity for the treatment of advanced NSCLC. We investigated whether long-term S-1 monotherapy is also useful as an adjuvant therapy after surgery in patients with NSCLC.

Background: The Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score is an objective tool that is widely used to assess the nutritional status in patients, including those with cancer. The relationship between the CONUT score and prognosis in patients who have undergone hepatic resection has not been evaluated in a multi-institutional study.
Methods: Data were retrospectively collected for 2461 consecutive patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who had undergone hepatic resection with curative intent at 13 institutions between January 2004 and December 2015.

Aim: To assess the pancreatic groove fat plane in the normal population and compare this with the fat plane in patients with groove pancreatitis or carcinoma using multidetector computed tomography (CT).
Material And Methods: The pancreatic groove fat plane was evaluated retrospectively in 460 normal subjects (normal group), and in 25 patients with groove pancreatitis or carcinoma (pathology group) using 5 mm- and 1 mm-thick slices of unenhanced axial multidetector CT images. Two investigators independently assessed the degree of pancreatic groove fat plane visualisation using a four-point scale (grade 1: visualisation of 0-25%, grade 2: 26-50%, grade 3: 51-75%, grade 4: 76-100%).
