After review of the literature, there appears to be no report on the histology of the mandibular nerve fiber distribution. Therefore, using a Wistar rat model, immunohistochemical staining with protein gene product (PGP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) antibody for all nerves and only the pain-sensitive nerves, respectively, was performed. We also statistically compared the nerve distribution density by mandibular region.

Cancer is a leading cause of death and disease worldwide, with a tremendous financial impact. Thus, the development of cost-effective novel approaches for suppressing tumor growth and progression is essential. In an attempt to identify the mechanisms responsible for tumor suppression, we screened for molecules downregulated in a cancer progression model and found that the chemokine CXCL14, also called BRAK, was the most significantly downregulated.

Vitamin A and its derivatives contribute to many physiological processes, including vision, neural differentiation, and reproduction. Vitamin A deficiency causes early cessation of spermatogenesis, characterized by a marked depletion of germ cells. However, there has been no clear understanding about the role of chronic intake of vitamin A excess (VAE) in spermatogenesis.

Dexmedetomidine (DEX) is a sedative and analgesic agent that acts via the alpha-2 adrenoreceptor and is associated with reduced anesthetic requirements, as well as attenuated blood pressure and heart rate in response to stressful events. A previous study reported that cat gingival blood flow was controlled via sympathetic alpha-adrenergic fibers involved in vasoconstriction. In the present study, experiment 1 focused on the relationship between the effects of DEX on alpha adrenoreceptors and vasoconstriction in the tissues of the oral cavity and compared the palatal mucosal blood flow (PMBF) in rabbits between general anesthesia with sevoflurane and sedation with DEX.

During childhood, perioral muscle function is closely associated with malocclusion. To clarify the effects of tongue function on maxillofacial morphology in children, tongue pressure and maximum lip-closing force (LCF) were measured and the relationship between perioral muscle function and maxillofacial morphology was evaluated according to the skeletal classification. Maximum tongue pressure (MTP) and swallowing tongue pressure (STP) were measured on the anterior palatine rugae in 100 children (Hellman's dental stages IIIA-IIIC) using a balloon-type tongue pressure measurement device.

Initial studies of cancer metabolism in the early 1920s found that cancer cells were phenotypically characterized by aerobic glycolysis, in that these cells favor glucose uptake and lactate production, even in the presence of oxygen. This property, called the Warburg effect, is considered a hallmark of cancer. The mechanism by which these cells acquire aerobic glycolysis has been uncovered.

Localization of the nitric oxide (NO)-producing enzyme, nitric oxide synthase (NOS), and its functions are currently being investigated in several tissues and organs. It has been suggested that NO is involved in nerve cell death and the development of neurodegenerative disease. The purpose of this study was to immunohistochemically investigate expression of NOS to clarify its function in the degeneration and regeneration of transected mouse sciatic nerve.

Galectin-1 and galectin-3 are C-type lectin receptors that bind to lipopolysaccharide in the cell wall of gram-negative bacteria. In this study, we investigated the effects of galectin-1 and galectin-3 on adhesion to and invasion of the human gingival epithelial cell line Ca9-22 by Porphyromonas gingivalis, a periodontal pathogenic gram-negative bacterium. Recombinant galectin-1, but not galectin-3, enhanced P.

Extracellular acidity is a hallmark of solid tumors and is associated with metastasis in the tumor microenvironment. Acidic extracellular pH (pH ) has been found to increase intracellular Ca and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) expression by activating NF-κB in the mouse B16 melanoma model. The present study assessed whether TRPM5, an intracellular Ca-dependent monovalent cation channel, is associated with acidic pH signaling and induction of MMP-9 expression in this mouse melanoma model.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is known to be intrinsically resistant to inhibitors for epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Until now, clinical outcomes for HNSCC using EGFR inhibitors as single agents have yielded disappointing results. Here, we aimed to study whether combinatorial treatment using AG1478 (EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor) and deguelin, which is a rotenoid isolated from the African plant , could enhance the anti-tumor effects of AG1478 in HNSCC.

Purpose: Lingual foramina can be observed between the lingual aspects of the mandible in humans. A sublingual artery is thought to exist in sublingual space and a submental artery in submaxillary space, which pierce the mandible through lingual foramina. During surgery for oral implant placement between apices of the mental foramen, it is important to determine the existence and positioning of lingual foramina.

Type I diabetes, an autoimmune disease, induces insulin deficiency, which then disrupts vascular endothelial cell function, affecting blood and lymphatic vessels. Nitric oxide (NO) is an immune-induced destructive mediator in type I diabetes, and inhibition of its production promotes arteriosclerosis. In this study, lymphangiogenesis and expression of NO synthase (NOS) during the healing process after tooth extraction were investigated immunohistochemically in control (C57BL) and Akita mice as a diabetes model.

The cytokine IL-33 is constitutively expressed in epithelial cells and it augments Th2 cytokine-mediated inflammatory responses by regulating innate immune cells. We aimed to determine the role of the periodontal pathogen, Porphyromonas gingivalis, in the enhanced expression of IL-33 in human gingival epithelial cells. We detected IL-33 in inflamed gingival epithelium from patients with chronic periodontitis, and found that P.
