Purpose: Pre-operative eating disorders are well documented within the metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) population, yet subthreshold dieting attempts are less understood. The objectives of this study were to define and categorize patients' preoperative dieting attempts, and to determine how attempts are associated with postoperative outcomes, eating disorders, and demographics.

Materials And Methods: Three hundred twenty-one patients (81.

Background: Previous studies suggest the relationship between activation time (AT) and action potential duration (APD) in the heart is dependent on electrotonic coupling, but this has not been directly tested. This study assessed whether acute changes in electrical coupling, or other determinants of conduction or repolarization, modulate APD heterogeneity.

Methods And Results: Langendorff-perfused guinea pig hearts were epicardially paced and optically mapped after treatment with the gap junction uncoupler carbenoxolone, ephaptic uncoupler mannitol, ephaptic enhancer dextran 2MDa, sodium channel inhibitor flecainide, or rapid component of the delayed rectifier potassium channel inhibitor E4031.

Article Synopsis
  • A study examined how inflammatory diets impact cardiovascular health, particularly in relation to adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) like preterm birth and gestational diabetes.
  • Data from over 3,200 pregnant individuals showed that higher inflammatory diet scores correlated with increased body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, triglycerides, and insulin levels, along with lower good cholesterol levels.
  • The study found that the negative impact of inflammatory diets on cardiometabolic health was more pronounced in individuals who experienced APOs during pregnancy.

Integrating machine learning interatomic potentials with hybrid reverse Monte Carlo structure refinements in .

Structure refinement with reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) is a powerful tool for interpreting experimental diffraction data. To ensure that the under-constrained RMC algorithm yields reasonable results, the hybrid RMC approach applies interatomic potentials to obtain solutions that are both physically sensible and in agreement with experiment. To expand the range of materials that can be studied with hybrid RMC, we have implemented a new interatomic potential constraint in that grants flexibility to apply potentials supported by the () molecular dynamics code.

Background: The univentricular heart with a predominant right ventricle morphology (uRV) has been associated with a higher rate of adverse cardiovascular events. It remains to be determined whether the specific type of uRV influences outcomes.

Methods And Results: A North American multicenter retrospective cohort study was conducted by the Alliance for Adult Research in Congenital Cardiology on individuals with a uRV and total cavopulmonary connection Fontan.

Saltwater intrusion is a critical concern for coastal communities due to its impacts on fresh ecosystems and civil infrastructure. Declining recharge and rising sea level are the two dominant drivers of saltwater intrusion along the land-ocean continuum, but there are currently no global estimates of future saltwater intrusion that synthesize these two spatially variable processes. Here, for the first time, we provide a novel assessment of global saltwater intrusion risk by integrating future recharge and sea level rise while considering the unique geology and topography of coastal regions.

Article Synopsis
  • The English yew is an evergreen tree found across Europe and North Africa, but its populations are declining due to habitat loss linked to human activities.
  • A four-year study investigated why yew seeds are not successfully regenerating, focusing on issues like seed germination, dormancy, and predation by animals.
  • The research identified seed predation and morphophysiological dormancy as key factors affecting regeneration, with recommendations for further studies to assess the impact of seed predation on the survival of yew seedlings.

Repositioning maneuvers for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) designed to induce otoconial movement in one canal can trigger and sometimes unwittingly treat BPPV in other canals. Patients with BPPV are best managed by precisely diagnosing the canal variant and using correctly performed, standardized testing and treatment maneuvers.

Bio-waste is a side product of biomedical research containing carbon, which can be utilized for developing carbon dots (CDs). CDs are known to be useful for a variety of applications because of their unique photoluminescence, low toxicity, and straightforward synthesis. In this paper, we employed a one-step hydrothermal method to prepare CDs from bio-waste as the only reactant.

Hairy cell leukemia is an uncommon B-cell malignancy with excellent response to purine analogs and to targeted therapies such as ibrutinib and vemurafenib. However, purine analogs are known to be highly immunosuppressive and the infection burden in this patient population with current therapies is unknown. We therefore conducted a retrospective cohort study following 149 patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Diagnostic variables from insertable cardiac monitors can help identify heart failure (HF) patients at risk, but high-risk alerts must be paired with interventions to improve patient outcomes.
  • The ALLEVIATE-HF study involved patients with recent HF events, using a risk score based on various monitor diagnostics to guide intervention protocols, including diuretic uptitration.
  • Results showed that the intervention was generally safe, with positive symptom resolution in most cases, indicating the feasibility of tailored medication management based on high-risk alerts.

Article Synopsis
  • Chemotherapy can lead to cognitive and emotional issues in breast cancer survivors, negatively affecting their quality of life.
  • This study aimed to see if diets high in omega-3 fatty acids (EPA+DHA) and low in sucrose could help alleviate these effects in a mouse model.
  • Results suggested that low sucrose diets improved long-term memory despite chemotherapy, and EPA+DHA intake had a positive effect on insulin resistance, but more research is needed to fully understand the implications.

Overall colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence and mortality have been decreasing for several decades; however, since the early 1990s CRC incidence rates have nearly doubled among adults aged under 50 years. This study pilot-tested a community-based mass-media campaign aimed at improving knowledge and awareness of early-onset CRC in this population. The campaign (#CRCandMe) was deployed from June to September 2023 in Utah and Wisconsin.

Catalytic reaction networks of multiple elementary steps operating under dynamic conditions a programmed input oscillation are difficult to interpret and optimize due to reaction system complexity. To understand these dynamic systems, individual elementary catalytic reactions oscillating between catalyst states were evaluated to identify their three fundamental characteristics that define their ability to promote reactions away from equilibrium. First, elementary catalytic reactions exhibit directionality to promote reactions forward or backward from equilibrium as determined by a ratchet directionality metric comprised of the input oscillation duty cycle and the reaction rate constants.
