Improving Knowledge of Top 200 Medications Through Retrieval Practice, Content Alignment, and Autonomous Learning.

To determine the impact of the holistic redesign of top 200 medications learning activities within a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) curriculum by comparing student performances on a comprehensive examination before and after the redesign. During a curricular revision at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy that began with the class of 2020, learning activities involving the top 200 medications were implemented that involved repeated retrieval and mastery concepts, alignment with therapeutic coursework, and autonomous learning regarding the top 200 medications. A high-stakes comprehensive top 200 medications examination was administered to students at the end of their third professional year both before and after implementation of these activities.

Purpose: To describe the implementation and validation of a novel patient profile review tool in the electronic medical record (EMR) at an academic medical center.

Summary: Pharmacy leaders at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center aspired to develop a data-driven approach to clinical pharmacy services. BackgroundStorage pool deficiency (SPD) is a rare bleeding disorder characterized by reduction in the number of delta granules within platelets, interfering with hemostasis. Current literature lacks well-designed studies from which to draw concrete conclusions regarding pre-procedural management of bleeding complications. The purpose of this study is to describe bleeding and safety outcomes of SPD patients receiving either pre-procedural platelet transfusions or platelet-sparing regimens.

Private Practice Dentists Improve Antibiotic Use After Dental Antibiotic Stewardship Education From Infectious Diseases Experts.

Background: Private practice dentists represent 72% of United States dentists. We conducted a prospective cohort study of private practice dentists comparing antibiotic use before and after dental antibiotic stewardship education by infectious diseases (ID) antibiotic stewardship experts.

Methods: Study phases were as follows: phase 1 (preeducation), 3 months of retrospective antibiotic data and a presurvey assessed baseline antibiotic knowledge; phase 2 (education), dentists attended 3 evening Zoom sessions; phase 3, (posteducation/interventions), 3 months of prospective audits with weekly feedback; phase 4, postsurvey and recommendations to reach more dentists.

The objective of this study was to describe the number and types of changes made to anticoagulation therapy as a result of pharmacist intervention during the COVID-19 pandemic.

End-stage respiratory disease and compromised clinical status can hinder patients' ability to use inhalers for effective symptom management. Nebulized and oral medications offer an alternative drug delivery method that may provide therapeutic benefits and reduce medication expenditure. Primary research objectives were to determine the cost per patient per claim per day for inhaler devices, nebulized medications, or oral corticosteroids and to estimate the monetary waste generated by using inhalers at the end of life.

Resilience is having the ability to respond to adversity proactively and resourcefully. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic's profound impact on antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASP) requires clinicians to call on their own resilience to manage the demands of the pandemic and the disruption of ASP activities. This article provides examples of ASP resilience from pharmacists and physicians from seven countries with different resources and approaches to ASP-The United States, The United Kingdom, Canada, Nigeria, Lebanon, South Africa, and Colombia.

Many infectious diseases (ID) clinicians join Twitter to follow other ID colleagues or "like" people. While there is great value in engaging with people who have similar interests, there is equal value in engaging with "unlike" or non-ID people. Here, we describe how Twitter connected an ID pharmacist with a pediatric surgeon, a vice chair of surgery, a surgeon chief medical officer from Spain, and a surgical intensive care unit pharmacist.

EMT alterations in the solute carrier landscape uncover SLC22A10/A15 imposed vulnerabilities in pancreatic cancer.

The involvement of membrane-bound solute carriers (SLCs) in neoplastic transdifferentiation processes is poorly defined. Here, we examined changes in the SLC landscape during epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of pancreatic cancer cells. We show that two SLCs from the organic anion/cation transporter family, SLC22A10 and SLC22A15, favor EMT via interferon (IFN) α and γ signaling activation of receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 1 (ROR1) expression.

Background: In order to assist the State of Ohio in the United States in addressing the opioid epidemic, the Ohio Attorney General appointed experts in a variety of academic disciplines to the Scientific Committee on Opioid Prevention and Education (SCOPE). The focus of SCOPE is the application of scientific principles in the development of prevention and educational strategies for reducing substance use disorder (SUD). One area of focus for SCOPE was SUD education of healthcare professionals.

Background: Optimal aminoglycoside dosing in critically ill patients represents a challenge for practitioners, especially in the medical intensive care unit (MICU). Over the past few years, nanotechnology-based approaches have emerged to override drug resistance owing to their superiority over other formulations because of their diverse therapeutic advantages such as target-specific drug delivery, enhanced bioavailability, biodegradability, and minimal off-target effects. Hybrid nanomaterials as a formulation of anticancer drugs with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have adequately proven efficacious in controlled release as well as disintegration into ultrasmall nanoparticles dragging the drug to penetrate deep into tumor tissues and consequently getting cleared from the body. In this study, to achieve better antitumor responses, we engineered self-assembled organic nanoparticles of potent anticancer compound BZ6 (BZ6-ONPs), BZ6-gold nanoparticle conjugates (BZ6-AuNPs), and organic-inorganic nanohybrids involving amalgamation of AuNPs with BZ6-ONPs (AuNPs@BZ6-ONPs) and comparatively analyzed their physicochemical as well as biological activities.

Neurofibromatosis: Molecular Pathogenesis and Natural Compounds as Potential Treatments.

The neurofibromatosis syndromes, including NF1, NF2, and schwannomatosis, are tumor suppressor syndromes characterized by multiple nervous system tumors, particularly Schwann cell neoplasms. NF-related tumors are mainly treated by surgery, and some of them have been treated by but are refractory to conventional chemotherapy. Recent advances in molecular genetics and genomics alongside the development of multiple animal models have provided a better understanding of NF tumor biology and facilitated target identification and therapeutic evaluation.

Pharmacist Provided Spirometry Services: A Scoping Review.

Purpose: Despite international guidelines' recommendations, spirometry is underutilized in the diagnosis and management of asthma and COPD. Spirometry may be an opportunity for trained pharmacists to meet the needs of patients with suspected or diagnosed lung conditions. The aim of this scoping review is to describe the literature including pharmacist provided spirometry services, specifically to identify: 1) the models of pharmacist provided spirometry services, and additional services commonly offered alongside spirometry, 2) pharmacist training and capability to obtain quality results, and (3) pharmacist, physician, and patient perspectives.

Personality Compatibility Within Faculty Mentoring Dyads and Perceived Mentoring Outcomes: Survey Results of Academic Medicine Institutions in the USA.

Mentorship is recognized as a critical approach to support successful careers in academic medicine. Obstacles to successful mentoring relationships include difficulty finding appropriate mentors and poor alignment of mentee/mentor interests and goals. We set out to investigate if concordance or discordance in personality traits of mentees and mentors impacts perceived success of mentoring relationships.
