The number of dental implants placed and restored every year is increasing across the world. However, there has been an increase in the number of reports with implant-related surgical complications in which the inferior alveolar nerve injury is the most serious one. This surgical problem can be avoided by using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), three-dimensional (3D) implant planning software, and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) technology such as stereolithographic surgical guides.

Conventional complete denture wearers often complain of lack of stability and overall discomfort with their prostheses. The advent of dental implants and advanced prosthetic methods have greatly improved this struggle for edentulous patients. The utilisation of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) technology has only further enhanced the capabilities of dental practitioners to rapidly and accurately restore edentulism.

Sustained Release of RNA Nanoparticles from Reservoir Implant for Ocular Delivery.

J Pharm Sci

December 2024

Division of Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH 45267. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • RNA nanoparticles show promise for ocular delivery, particularly for chronic eye diseases, using a periocular reservoir implant like an episcleral implant.
  • The study aimed to create these implants, test their release performance with model substances and RNA nanoparticles, and apply hindered transport theory to analyze the release rates.
  • Findings showed that the release rates depended on both the size of the substances and the implant membrane's characteristics, indicating a potential for extended delivery of RNA nanoparticles through this implantation method.

Background: IgG antibodies (Abs) to platelet factor 4 complexed to heparin (PF4/H) commonly occur after heparin exposure but cause life-threatening complications of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) in only a few patients. Presently, only platelet activation assays reliably distinguish anti-PF4/H Abs that cause disease (HIT Abs) from those likely to be asymptomatic (AAbs).

Objectives: Recent studies indicate that complement activation is an important serologic property of HIT Abs and is essential for FcγRIIA-mediated cellular activation.

Purpose: Cumulative cisplatin doses of ≥ 200 mg/m improve survival in adults with head-and-neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) undergoing chemoradiation, but many older adults with HNSCC cannot receive this prognostically relevant dose due to toxicities. This study aims to develop predictive models to assess the likelihood of older adults with HNSCC receiving ≥ 200 mg/m cisplatin during chemoradiation.

Methods: 366 patients from the SENIOR database, an international cohort of adults ≥ 65 years with HNSCC, received definitive chemoradiation with single-agent cisplatin and were analyzed.

Over the past two decades, guidelines for the on-demand treatment of hereditary angioedema (HAE) attacks have undergone significant evolution. Early treatment guidelines, such as the Canadian 2003 International Consensus Algorithm, often gated on-demand treatment by attack location and/or severity. Pivotal trials for on-demand injectable treatments (plasma-derived C1 esterase inhibitor [C1INH], icatibant, ecallantide [US only], recombinant C1INH), which were approved in the US and EU between 2008-2014, were designed accordingly.

Management of Horizontal Cleavage Meniscus Tears.

Curr Rev Musculoskelet Med

December 2024

Department of Orthopaedics, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, 2835 Fred Taylor Dr. Suite 2200, Columbus, OH, 43202, USA.

Purpose Of Review: The management of horizontal cleavage meniscus tears (HCT) has evolved in recent years. Historically, HCTs have been treated with partial meniscectomy, but multiple studies have shown the long-term risks of development of arthritic changes in the knee following meniscectomy. These findings have renewed interest in meniscal preservation whenever possible, even in older patients not previously considered for meniscus repair.

Importance: Molecular techniques, including next-generation sequencing, genomic copy number profiling, fusion transcript detection, and genomic DNA methylation arrays, are now indispensable tools for the workup of central nervous system (CNS) tumors. Yet there remains a great deal of heterogeneity in using such biomarker testing across institutions and hospital systems. This is in large part because there is a persistent reluctance among third-party payers to cover molecular testing.

Cellular responses to biotic stress frequently involve signaling pathways that are conserved across eukaryotes. These pathways include the cytoskeleton, a proteinaceous network that senses external cues at the cell surface and signals to interior cellular components. During biotic stress, dynamic cytoskeletal rearrangements serve as a platform from which early immune-associated processes are organized and activated.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) represents an energy-efficient process for the removal of biological nitrogen from ammonium-rich wastewater. However, the susceptibility of anammox bacteria to coexisting heavy metals considerably restricts their use in engineering practices. Here, we report that acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL), a signaling molecule that mediates quorum sensing (QS), significantly enhances the nitrogen removal rate by 24% under Cu stress.
