A 30-year-old female was referred to our hospital for further examination of liver dysfunction. A huge, soft mass was noted in her left upper quadrant on physical examination. Abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed a huge cystic tumor of 20 cm in the hilus of the spleen.

Economic Impact of Venous Thromboembolism Following Major Orthopaedic Surgery in Japan.

Objectives: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is the most frequent complication following major orthopaedic surgery (MOS). Although studies in Western populations have demonstrated significantly higher costs for patients with VTE versus those without VTE after MOS, there is a paucity of such data in Japan. This study was conducted to understand the costs and VTE rates in Japanese patients.

Two cases of acute myocardial infarction during combined chemotherapy in young patients with testicular cancer.

In total hip arthroplasty (THA), accurately positioning the cup is crucial for achieving an adequate postoperative range of motion and stability. For 47 THA cases in which the inferomedial rim of the cup had been positioned parallel to the transverse acetabular ligament, we retrospectively performed the measurements of the radiographic cup anteversion angle relative to the anterior pelvic plane using 3-dimensional reconstruction computed tomography. Desensitization treatment with cisplatin after carboplatin hypersensitivity reaction in gynecologic cancer.

Platinum-based chemotherapy is the standard regimen for the treatment of gynecologic cancers; however, hypersensitivity reactions (HR) to platinum often lead to discontinuation of this effective treatment. Here we performed a desensitization protocol for platinum infusion in 3 patients who required platinum re-administration after developing HR. Two patients (Case 1 and 2) were treated with the desensitization protocol successfully without developing HR during the subsequent 3 courses.

A huge ovarian smooth muscle tumor: a case report.

Ovarian smooth muscle tumors are a very rare type of ovarian tumor. In this paper, we report the case of a 62-year-old woman who had a huge smooth muscle tumor of the right ovary. The values of all the serum tumor markers were within normal limit.

Measurements of ligamentum flavum thickening at lumbar spine using MRI.

Introduction: As the ligamentum flavum (LF) covers most of the posterolateral part of the lumbar spinal canal, its thickening can be attributed to the development of lumbar canal encroachment. Nevertheless, there have been few reports describing the natural history of the LF.

Method: To investigate the natural history and to subsequently clarify the pathogenesis of LF thickening, we conducted a transverse radiological study of the LF at the lumbar spine using magnetic resonance images.

A case of spontaneous middle cerebral artery occlusion with moyamoya-like vessels associated with contralateral middle cerebral artery aneurysm is reported. A 23-year-old male was admitted to our hospital with complaints of severe headache and vomiting. On admission CT scan demonstrated subarachnoid hemorrhage with high density in the left Sylvian fissure and suggested a ruptured left middle cerebral artery aneurysm.
