The accuracy of methods for determining the internal length of a nasogastric tube in adult patients: a systematic review.

Am J Clin Nutr

September 2022

University Centre for Nursing and Midwifery, Department of Public Health and Primary Care, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium.

Background: Blind insertion of nasogastric (NG) tubes is performed for several reasons: nutrition and medication administration, gastric aspiration/decompression, and other, diagnostic reasons. Accidental intraesophageal and intestinal placement is common, and increases the risk of serious complications. Therefore, accurate determination of the internal length of the NG tube before placement is considered a prerequisite for achieving correct gastric positioning.

The incorporation of dehydroamino acid or fragments of oxazole into peptide chain is accompanied by a distorted three-dimensional structure and additionally enables the introduction of non-typical side-chain substituents. Thus, such compounds could be building blocks for obtaining novel foldamers and/or artificial enzymes (artzymes). In this paper, effective synthetic procedures leading to such building blocks-tetrapeptides containing glycyldehydroalanine, glycyldehydrophenylalanine, and glycyloxazole subunits-are described.

People in need of care, chronic or acute, often present problematic food intake and special nutritional needs. Integrated, person-centred and pro-active food and nutritional care delivery has been proven effective for people in health care. However, skills mismatches have been reported in different professions involved, which also applies to the role of chefs in healthcare.

Monitoring changes in cortisol levels is a widespread tool for measuring individuals' stress responses. However, an acute increase in cortisol levels does not necessarily denote an individual in distress, as increases in cortisol can be elicited by all factors that signal the need to mobilize energy. Nor are low levels of cortisol indicative for a relaxed, healthy individual.

Radical Intermediates in the Degradation of Hop Acids.

J Agric Food Chem

August 2021

EcoSynth NV, Industrielaan 12, 9800 Deinze, Belgium.

Radical formation in isohumulones was investigated under different types of stress, including temperature, transition metal ions, and hydrogen peroxide. Including dihydroisohumulones and tetrahydroisohumulones, as relevant analogues, allowed us to evaluate critical functionalities in radical formation. Using spin-trapping methodology with 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline -oxide and --butyl-α-phenylnitrone as relevant traps, followed by simulation of corresponding spin adducts, identification of incipient radicals was attempted.

Antibiotics are considered one of the great "miracles" of the 20th century. Now in the 21st century in the post-antibiotic era, the miracle is turning into a nightmare, due to the growing problem of the resistance of microorganisms to classic antimicrobials and the non-investment by the pharmaceutical industry in new antimicrobial agents. Unfortunately, the current COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the global risks associated with uncontrolled infections and the various forms of impact that such a pandemic may have on the economy and on social habits besides the associated morbidity and mortality.
