Objective: The glenohumeral (GH) joint is a classic ball-and-socket joint of the shoulder subject to various pathologies including osteoarthritis (OA). Degenerative changes of the OA evident on traditional imaging are proceeded by molecular changes, which if detected early could enhance disease prevention and treatment. In this study, we use F-FluoroDeoxyGlucose (FDG) and F-sodium-fluoride (NaF)-PET/CT to investigate the effects limb laterality, age, and BMI on the inflammation and bone turnover of the GH shoulder joint.

Background: Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-positron emission tomography/contrast-enhanced computed tomography (PET/CT) is a sensitive imaging modality for prostate cancer (PCa). Due to lack of knowledge of the patient benefit, PSMA-PET/CT is not yet recommended in the European guidelines for staging and treatment planning of patients with newly diagnosed PCa. We will investigate the potential difference in progression-free survival (PFS) and quality of life (QoL) of using PSMA-PET/CT versus sodium fluoride (NaF)-PET/CT for staging and treatment planning in patients with newly diagnosed PCa.

Vertebral fractures (VFs) have been associated with future fractures, yet few studies have evaluated whether this pertains to VFs available for identification on routine radiological imaging. We sought to evaluate the risk of subsequent fractures in subjects with VF identified opportunistically on computed tomography (CT) scans performed as part of routine clinical practice. From the radiology database of Holbæk Hospital we identified the first CT scan including the thorax and/or abdomen of 2000 consecutive men and women aged 50 years or older, performed from January 1, 2010 onward.

Article Synopsis
  • About one-third of patients diagnosed with Brugada syndrome (BrS) were treated with nonrecommended medications, with no significant change in prescription patterns observed post-diagnosis.
  • Female patients, those with psychiatric diseases, and those with prior use of nonrecommended drugs were more likely to use these medications after diagnosis.
  • No significant associations were found between nonrecommended drug use and outcomes like appropriate implantable cardioverter defibrillator therapy, mortality, or arrhythmic events during follow-up.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to examine the relationship between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and bone mineral density (BMD) in 147 adults undergoing liver biopsies and DXA scans.
  • The participants included 53% with steatosis, 25% with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and 23% without NAFLD (controls), but the BMD results showed no significant differences between these groups.
  • Findings suggest that the severity of NAFLD (assessed by NAFLD activity score) does not affect BMD, indicating that steatosis and NASH do not harm bone mineral density in these relatively young patients.

Background The response of the left ventricle to cardiogenic shock (CS) caused by right ventricular (RV) infarction and the effect of treatment with either vasoactive treatment or Impella RP are not well described. We sought to determine RV and left ventricular longitudinal strain (LS) by echocardiography after initiation of either Impella RP or vasoactive treatment for CS induced by right coronary artery embolization. Methods and Results CS was induced with microsphere embolization in the right coronary artery in 20 pigs.

Beta-blockers in the era of precision medicine in patients with cirrhosis.

J Hepatol

April 2023

Centre for Liver Research, Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Odense University Hospital Odense, Denmark; Institute of Clinical Research, University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark. Electronic address:

For decades, non-selective beta-blockers (NSBBs) have been the standard of care for the primary and secondary prevention of bleeding from oesophageal varices. However, several questions regarding the best clinical use of NSBBs remain unanswered and new data continue to emerge. Herein, we aim to delineate the therapeutic window of NSBBs in cirrhosis from a more individualised perspective.

Background And Aims: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is known to affect multiple organs by binding to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptors and might therefore affect male fertility. This review aims to collect all original articles on the effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on male fertility, including the duration of time after infection required for these effects to begin to manifest and recommend how clinicians should approach cases with a recent illness.

Methods: This review was developed according to the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines.

Article Synopsis
  • Approximately half of young patients with atrioventricular block (AVB) don’t have a known cause; this study looked into potential genetic factors in these cases.
  • Researchers analyzed data from a Danish registry to find patients under 50 who received a pacemaker for AVB, and invited 226 out of 471 identified patients for genetic screening.
  • They found genetic variants linked to AVB in 12 patients (5%), with most variants related to family history of AVB or sudden cardiac death, indicating the importance of genetic testing for diagnosis and risk assessment.

The antimony(iii) complex of 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetate (DOTA) has been prepared and its exceptionally low stability observed. The Sb(iii) ion in Na[Sb(DOTA)]·4HO shows an approximately square antiprismatic coordination geometry that is close to superimposable to the Bi(iii) geometry in [Bi(DOTA)] in two phases containing this anion, Na[Bi(DOTA)]·4HO, [HO][Bi(DOTA)]·HO for which structures are also described. Interestingly, DOTA itself in [(HDOTA)]Cl·4HO·DMSO shows the same orientation of the NO metal binding cavity reflecting the limited flexibility of DOTA in an octadentate coordination mode.
