Methanogens dominate methanotrophs and act as a methane source in aquaculture pond sediments.

Ecotoxicol Environ Saf

December 2024

Fisheries Science Institute, Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, Beijing 100068, PR China. Electronic address:

Aquaculture pond sediments act as hotspots for methane (CH) emissions; however, knowledge gaps on the regulation of microorganisms hinder our further understanding of methane dynamics in aquaculture pond sediment. Using field sampling and molecular analysis, we examined CH fluxes, the methanogenic community composition, and their interaction with methanotrophs to comprehensively understand the methane cycling in sediments of aquaculture ponds in northern China. Compared with a fishing pond without feed inputs, the abundances of methanogens mcrA and methanotrophs pmoA genes increased significantly in aquaculture ponds sediments.

The harmless disposal, resource recovery, and synergistic efficiency reduction of municipal sludge have been the research focuses for the last few years. Calcium peroxide (CaO) is a multifunctional and safe peroxide that produces an alkaline oxidation environment to promote the fermentation of municipal sludge to produce hydrogen (H) and volatile fatty acids (VFAs), thus realizing sludge resource recovery. This review outlines the research achievements of CaO in sludge resource recovery, improvement of sludge dewaterability, and removal of pollutants from sludge in recent years.

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is widely present in water systems, and its stable properties and poor biodegradability can result in high residues of SMX in the water environment. This, in turn, can have detrimental effects on the entire aquatic habitat and human life and health. This study aimed to investigate the toxic effects of SMX on the growth, photosynthetic pigment content, and oxidative stress of two marine microalgae species: Skeletonema costatum and Phaeodactylum tricornutum.

Redox state and metabolic responses to severe heat stress in lenok (Salmonidae).

Front Mol Biosci

May 2023

National Engineering Research Center for Freshwaters (Beijing), Fisheries Science Institute, Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, Beijing, China.

In order to provide new insights into the physiological responses of lenok (: Salmonidae) to acute and severe heat stress (25°C, 48 h), dynamic changes in redox state and metabolic responses are studied combined biochemical index and non-targeted metabolome. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) consumption causes significant increases in ratio of reduced NADH to NAD and ratio of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) to NADP, which induced the redox imbalance in heat stressed lenok. Lowered reduced glutathione/oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) ratios suggested that more oxidized conditions occurred in heat-stressed lenok, leading to membrane lipid oxidation.

Face masks are an indispensable low-cost public healthcare necessity for containing viral transmission. After the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) became a pandemic, there was an unprecedented demand for, and subsequent increase in face mask production and use, leading to global ecological challenges, including excessive resource consumption and significant environmental pollution. Here, we review the global demand volume for face masks and the associated energy consumption and pollution potential throughout their life cycle.

The Pacific oyster could be affected by several pressure sources during cold chain logistics, which reduce the quality of oyster, and even improve its mortality. For improving the quality of oyster, the effects of depuration process at different cooling rates (1, 3, 7, 11 and 16 °C/h) on selected Pacific oyster were studied. The results indicated that extreme fluctuations in the depuration temperatures could affect the survival rates and qualities of oysters.

Air pollution constitutes potential threats to wildlife and human health; therefore, it must be monitored accurately. However, little attention has been given to understanding the toxicological effects induced by air pollution and the suitability of bird species as bioindicators. The Eurasian tree sparrow (Passer montanus), a human commensal species, was used as a study model to examine toxic metal accumulation, retention of particulate matter (PM), immunological and antioxidant capacities, and hematological parameters in birds inhabiting those areas with relatively higher (Shijiazhuang city) or lower (Chengde city) levels of PM and PM in China.
