Background: Good communication is necessary for safety and quality of health. This study aims to determine the effect of ISBAR communication on nurses' perception of communication and attitudes toward patient safety in the Emirates Maternity Hospital in the Gaza Strip, Palestine.

Method: A single-group hospital-based intervention study (pre and posttest) was conducted.

The determination of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) in biological fluids is of great interest in the early pregnancy diagnostics, the evaluation of pregnancy disorders, as a tumor marker, as a screening procedure for anti-doping control, and many other purposes. A simple sandwich-type UltraMicro Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay (UMELISA) has been developed for the measurement of HCG in serum and urine samples. Strips coated with a high affinity MAb directed against HCG are used as solid phase, to ensure the specificity of the assay.

Background: There is little data available on HBV infection and mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) in Vietnam.

Objective: This study is aimed at assessing the prevalence of HBV infection and the current situation of MTCT in Haiphong, Vietnam.

Methods: A transversal survey of 1721 pregnant women followed by an observational prospective cohort study of 183 HBV-infected women was conducted at Haiphong Gyneco-Obstetric Hospital.

Introduction According to the current classification of the Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society (LWPES) and the European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) of Disorders of Sex Development (DSD), etiologies vary around the world. Ethnic or genetic diversity probably explains this variability. We therefore conducted the present study on etiologies of DSDs in a country from central Africa.

Nationwide survey of cervical cytology laboratory practices in China.

Introduction: Cervical cancer rates in China remain high, with only limited opportunistic screening in urban centers and large mostly unscreened rural areas. Cervical cytology practices in China have been changing over the last decade with introduction of The Bethesda System reporting terminology, liquid-based cytology (LBC), and programs for cervical cytology screening of underserved rural populations. An effort was undertaken for the first time to collect nationwide data on cervical cytology laboratory practices in China, a possible first step toward increased standardization and potential development of nationwide cytology quality benchmarks.

First detection and characterization of macrolide-resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae strains in Cuba.

Objectives: Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a common cause of community-acquired pneumonia in humans. Treatment of infections can be complicated by the occurrence of macrolide resistant strains. The study was conducted to evaluate the presence of resistant strains in Cuba and to determine the corresponding genotypes.

Positive Effect of Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiatives on Improving Mothers' Intention for Successful Breastfeeding in Korea.

Background: In Korea, the breastfeeding (BF) rate of infants aged 6 months or more is drastically decreasing, and this phenomenon is particularly worrisome for the future health of the population. The present study aimed to identify an antenatal strategy for initiation and continuation of human BF, and to identify how Baby-Friendly Hospitals (BFHs) may positively influence the intention to breastfeed.

Methods: A total of 414 pregnant Korean antenatal women were surveyed using questionnaires to determine current knowledge of the benefits of human breast milk, whether they planned to breastfeed after delivery, to continue BF after reinstatement in the workforce, are willing to abide by rooming-in care for infants, and plan to give birth at BFHs.

Potential sexual transmission of Giardia in an endemic region: a case series.

We present four cases in which probable sexual transmission of Giardia lamblia was suspected. Diagnosing this mode of transmission in endemic areas is often difficult and should be considered only as possible, because exposure to poor sanitation and a potentially contaminated environment are always latent. However, as patients reported, there was no history of drinking tap water, exposure to recreational water, eating contaminated food, or other potential sources of infection but anilingus with an infected partner.

Management of pregnancy loss in the first trimester: a retrospective audit.

Background: Early pregnancy loss occurs in 10% of all clinically recognised pregnancies. 80% of pregnancy losses occur in the first trimester. Offering choice and participation in the management decisions is essential to patient-centred care.

Stages of development of traditional simulation unit of surgery for manual extra capsular cataract extraction in sub-Saharan African region.

The manual extracapsular extraction of the lens is the surgical technique that is most practiced for the treatment of cataract in sub-Saharan Africa. Learning this technique requires the creation of a surgical simulation unit within training institutes. We describe the development stages of a traditional simulation unit.

Optimizing CIGB-300 intralesional delivery in locally advanced cervical cancer.

Background: We conducted a phase 1 trial in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer by injecting 0.5 ml of the CK2-antagonist CIGB-300 in two different sites on tumours to assess tumour uptake, safety, pharmacodynamic activity and identify the recommended dose.

Methods: Fourteen patients were treated with intralesional injections containing 35 or 70 mg of CIGB-300 in three alternate cycles of three consecutive days each before standard chemoradiotherapy.

Efflux pump gene expression in multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis clinical isolates.

Isoniazid (INH) and rifampicin (RIF) are the two most effective drugs in tuberculosis therapy. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of resistance to these two drugs is essential to quickly diagnose multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis and extensive drug-resistant tuberculosis. Nine clinical Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates resistant to only INH and RIF and 10 clinical pan-sensitive isolates were included to evaluate the expression of 20 putative drug efflux pump genes and sequence mutations in rpoB (RIF), katG (INH), the inhA promoter (INH), and oxyR-ahpC (INH).

Objective: Most patients in Turkey still prefer general anaesthesia (GA) and are somehow afraid of regional blocks. Receiving adequate information is likely to increase patients' awareness about regional anaesthesia (RA). We aimed to determine the current preferences of parturients, the reasons for refusal of RA techniques, and how detailed information about the type of anaesthesia affect a patient's preference for anaesthesia among obstetric cases.

This Task Force document discusses ethical issues arising with requests for medically assisted reproduction from people in what may be called 'non-standard' situations and relationships. The document stresses that categorically denying access to any of these groups cannot be reconciled with a human rights perspective. If there are concerns about the implications of assisted reproduction on the wellbeing of any of the persons involved, including the future child, a surrogate mother or the applicants themselves, these concerns have to be considered in the light of the available scientific evidence.

Chromosome analysis in embryos from young patients with previous parity.

This Task Force document discusses some relatively unexplored ethical issues involved in preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). The document starts from the wide consensus that PGD is ethically acceptable if aimed at helping at-risk couples to avoid having a child with a serious disorder. However, if understood as a limit to acceptable indications for PGD, this 'medical model' may turn out too restrictive.

Bilateral neck cysts as an isolated sonographic finding in the antenatal detection of fetal aneuploidy: a case report.

Isolated fetal lateral neck cysts can represent a cystic hygroma or a developmental remnant cyst. In the absence of an increased nuchal translucency or associated malformations the risk of aneuploidy has been considered negligible. Still, dysmorphology in aneuploid fetuses might not be evident except at a later stage.
