Russian Institute of Radiology and Agroecology of NRC "Kurchatov Institute", Kievskoe shosse, 109 km, Obninsk, Kaluga Region 249032, Russia. Electronic address:

Adaptation to environmental stressors is an essential property of plants that allows them, despite an immobile lifestyle, to survive in a changeable environment. The chain of successive events culminating in the final radiobiological reaction begins with the absorption of energy of ionizing radiation in the cell. Starting from stochastic acts of molecular injury formation, radiation damage gradually acquires deterministic features, which are expressed in a limited number of phenomena that complete plant radiation damage.

The effects of residual radiation from atomic bombs have been considered to be minimal because of its low levels of external radioactivity. However, studies involving atomic bomb survivors exposed to only residual radiation in Hiroshima and Nagasaki have indicated possible adverse health effects. Thus, we investigated the biological effects of radioactive dust of manganese dioxide 56 (MnO), a major radioisotope formed in soil by neutron beams from a bomb.

We studied the effects of single and combined action of protons and carbon ions C on the pool of MCF-7 human breast cancer stem cells. Single irradiation with a beam of protons or carbon ions had no significant effects on the relative number of cancer stem cells (CSC). The effects of combined irradiation in a total equieffective dose of 4 Gy depended on the sequence of exposure to ionizing radiations: the relative number of CSC did not change after irradiation with carbon ions and then with protons, but increased in the case of the reverse sequence.

Proton and ion radiation therapy, when used both as single radiation and in mixed radiation mode, have a number of advantages over the conventional γ-therapy that are determined by physical characteristics of accelerated particles. The paper presents the results of an in vitro study of the effectiveness of sequential exposures of Chinese hamster tumor cells B14-150 to proton (p) and C ion beams. We used 4 irradiation schemes differing by the sequence of exposure and the contribution of each radiation to the total dose.

Common medical events may be associated with decreased immunologic activity and dysregulation of functional epithelial and neuronal tissues caused by growth factors and vesicle secretion by stem and somatic cells. Systemic injection of MSCs has been shown to reduce the immune response mainly through paracrine mechanisms, but some points related to the possibility of adverse events and side effects should be clarified. Flow cytometry for at least 20 cell markers is crucial to assess cell senescence and overall cell viability.

Immune responses to tissue-engineered grafts made of xenogeneic materials remain poorly studied. The scope of current investigations is limited by the lack of information on orthotopically implanted grafts. A deeper understanding of these processes is of great importance since innovative surgical approaches include the implantation of xenogeneic decellularized scaffolds seeded by cells.

Treatment of a wide variety of defects in the oral and maxillofacial regions requires the use of innovative approaches to achieve best outcomes. One of the promising directions is the use of gene-activated materials (GAMs) that represent a combination of tissue engineering and gene therapy. This approach implies that biocompatible materials will be enriched with gene-carrying vectors and implanted into the defect site resulting in transfection of the recipient's cells and secretion of encoded therapeutic protein in situ.

Reliable methods for identifying rodents play an important role in ensuring the success of preclinical studies. However, animal identification remains a trivial laboratory routine that is not often discussed, despite the fact that more than 6 million rodents are used in animal studies each year. Currently, there are extensive regulations in place to ensure adequate anesthesia and to reduce animal suffering during experiments.

Article Synopsis
  • Accurate assessment of health risks from low-dose radiation relies on effective calculation of exposure estimates, which are verified with retrospective dosimetry methods.
  • A study compared calculated absorbed doses with those obtained through instrumental methods, specifically in residents of three Kazakh villages affected by nuclear testing in 1949, showing strong correlations between the two types of data.
  • The findings support the validity of the calculation method for estimating individual exposure and highlight the usefulness of additional data from soil contamination measurements for enhancing dose reconstruction.

Nuclear medicine presents one of the most promising modalities for efficient non-invasive treatment of a variety of cancers, but the application of radionuclides in cancer therapy and diagnostics is severely limited by their nonspecific tissue accumulation and poor biocompatibility. Here, we explore the use of nanosized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as carriers of radionuclides to order to improve their delivery to tumour. To demonstrate the concept, we prepared polymer-coated MIL-101(Cr)-NHMOFs and conjugated them with clinically utilized radionuclideRe.

Crustaceans have successfully adapted to survive in their natural habitat, rich in microorganisms, due to the presence of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in their organism. They achieve this adaptation despite lacking the highly specific adaptive immune system found in vertebrates. One valuable source of AMPs is the hepatopancreas, a waste product from crab fishery and its processing.

A biotechnology for personalized ex vivo gene therapy based on molecular genomic balancing of hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) chromatin with nucleosome monomers of human genomic DNA (hDNA) has been developed and implemented in the clinic to change (to "correct") mutant chromosome loci genomes of dominant HSC clones that form mono- and oligoclonal hematopoiesis during aging and major (oncological, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative and autoimmune) fatal immune-mediated diseases of civilization. A fundamentally new biotechnological approach has been applied to the delivery of genetic material into eukaryotic stem and progenitor cells by establishing an artificial "recombinogenic situation" in them to induce homologous recombination (equivalent replacement) of mutant DNA regions with healthy hDNA. In experimental preclinical trials, the effectiveness of genomic balancing technology has been proven to reduce the risk of sudden death in old animals and to increase the lifespan of outbred mice by 30% and Wistar rats by 57%.

It is known that the saturation ratio of transferrin (Tf) with iron in human blood is an important clinical parameter. Specific antibodies can be used to analyze subtle changes in the relative abundance of different forms of transferrin potentially associated with a pathological process. Recently, the authors of this study were able to obtain and characterize highly specific single-domain antibodies (nanobodies) that predominantly recognize the iron-saturated (holo-Tf) or iron-unsaturated (apo-Tf) form of transferrin.
