As highly trained practitioners in the practice of patient care, at times we may not emphasize the art of the patient experience. Multiple studies have shown that patients’ attitudes and expectations have an effect on their outcomes after surgery. Our patients’ perceptions of their care, through proxies like respect, courtesy, compassion, emotional connection and listening, may be as important to them as the actual care received.

Novel adhesives for distal radius fixation: A biomechanical analysis.

J Mech Behav Biomed Mater

January 2019

Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Ryerson University, Toronto, ON, Canada. Electronic address:

Wrist fractures can be difficult to treat due to advanced age of the patient, medical co-morbidities, and comminution of the bone. This study examines the effectiveness of two injectable glass polyalkenoate cements (GPCs), derived from two different glasses (A and B), as minimally invasive treatments for distal radius fractures. Twenty-seven fresh cadaveric radial pairs were tested either in compressive fatigue or to quasi-static compressive failure.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) cause significant morbidity and mortality in the surgical population as well as significant costs to health care. It can be surprisingly difficult to address this common complication without a multifaceted, multimodal team-based approach to the problem. We used our National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) data on the incidence of CAUTI in our "procedure targeted" and "essentials" general surgery and orthopedic surgery cases before and after the implementation of our reduction strategy and found a significant improvement.

Evaluating the critical strain energy release rate of bioactive glass coatings on Ti6Al4V substrates after degradation.

J Mech Behav Biomed Mater

February 2018

Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Ryerson University, Toronto Ontario, Canada M5B 2K3. Electronic address:

It has been reported that the adhesion of bioactive glass coatings to Ti6Al4V reduces after degradation, however, this effect has not been quantified. This paper uses bilayer double cantilever (DCB) specimens to determine G and G, the critical mode I and mode II strain energy release rates, respectively, of bioactive coating/Ti6Al4V substrate systems degraded to different extents. Three borate-based bioactive glass coatings with increasing amounts of incorporated SrO (0, 15 and 25mol%) were enamelled onto Ti6Al4V substrates and then immersed in de-ionized water for 2, 6 and 24h.

In an attempt to combat the possibility of bacterial infection and insufficient bone growth around metallic, surgical implants, bioactive glasses may be employed as coatings. In this work, silica-based and borate-based glass series were synthesized for this purpose and subsequently characterized in terms of antibacterial behavior, solubility and cytotoxicity. Borate-based glasses were found to exhibit significantly superior antibacterial properties and increased solubility compared to their silica-based counterparts, with BRT0 and BRT3 (borate-based glasses with 0 and 15 mol% of titanium dioxide incorporated, respectively) outperforming the remainder of the glasses, both borate and silicate based, in these respects.

Quantifying the mode II critical strain energy release rate of borate bioactive glass coatings on Ti6Al4V substrates.

J Mech Behav Biomed Mater

November 2017

Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Ryerson University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5B 2K3. Electronic address:

Bioactive glasses have been used as coatings for biomedical implants because they can be formulated to promote osseointegration, antibacterial behavior, bone formation, and tissue healing through the incorporation and subsequent release of certain ions. However, shear loading on coated implants has been reported to cause the delamination and loosening of such coatings. This work uses a recently developed fracture mechanics testing methodology to quantify the critical strain energy release rate under nearly pure mode II conditions, G, of a series of borate-based glass coating/Ti6Al4V alloy substrate systems.

A Comparison of Health-Related Quality of Life of Women Awaiting Pelvic Organ Prolapse Surgery versus Hip or Knee Replacement.

J Obstet Gynaecol Can

May 2017

Division of Urogynaecology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Mount Sinai Hospital, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON.

Objective: Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) can significantly decrease the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of women. In 2005, provincial and territorial wait time benchmarks were set in areas such as hip and knee replacement, but such efforts were lagging for urogynaecological surgeries. This study aimed to compare wait times and HRQOL scores of females awaiting surgery for POP with those of women awaiting hip or knee replacement.

Silica-based and borate-based glass series, with increasing amounts of TiO₂ incorporated, are characterized in terms of their mechanical properties relevant to their use as metallic coating materials. It is observed that borate-based glasses exhibit CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) closer to the substrate's (Ti6Al4V) CTE, translating into higher mode I critical strain energy release rates of glasses and compressive residual stresses and strains at the coating/substrate interface, outperforming the silica-based glasses counterparts. An increase in the content of TiO₂ in the glasses results in an increase in the mode I critical strain energy release rate for both the bulk glass and for the coating/substrate system, proving that the addition of TiO₂ to the glass structure enhances its toughness, while decreasing its bulk hardness.

Persons with schizophrenia are at a high risk, almost 4.6 times more likely, of having drug abuse problems than persons without psychiatric illness. Among the influential proposals to explain such a high comorbidity rate, the 'self-medication hypothesis' proposed that persons with schizophrenia take to drugs in an effort to cope with the illness and medication side effects.
