The American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) Practice Committee endorsed by the Board of Governors presents a Position Statement on the role of locum tenens in the practice of pediatric surgery. The Practice Committee also presents a set of guidelines for locum tenens practice. These recommendations highlight safe practice and quality care that protects the patient as well as the pediatric surgeon by offering best practice standards, defining optimal resources and establishing parameters by which hospitals and locum tenens agencies should abide.

Objectives: Analysis of the clinical utility of rapid whole-genome sequencing (rWGS) outside of the neonatal period is lacking. We describe the use of rWGS in PICU and cardiovascular ICU (CICU) patients across four institutions.
Design: Ambidirectional multisite cohort study.

Primary liver tumours in neonates with single-ventricle palliation are exceedingly rare. We present the first reported case of neonatal hepatoblastoma with severe Ebstein's anomaly following Starnes procedure. The patient's postoperative course highlights the challenges and complications in simultaneous management of these diagnoses.

Background And Objectives: Overuse of antibiotics in NICUs is a problem worldwide. Unnecessary antibiotic exposure leads to resistance, changes in the microbiome, and increases the risk of bronchopulmonary dysplasia, retinopathy of prematurity, periventricular leukomalacia, necrotizing enterocolitis, late-onset sepsis (LOS), and mortality in neonates. We aimed to safely reduce the antibiotic usage rate (AUR) in our level IV unit by 10% by December 2018.

The impact of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) on local and systemic inflammation is poorly characterized, particularly when compared with invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). We sought to quantify the local and systemic inflammatory response of these 2 respiratory treatments in rats with lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced lung injury (LPS-injured) and healthy rats. Animals were subjected to 4 h of NIV or IMV treatments at noninjurious settings, or 4 h of control treatment in which healthy or LPS-injured animals remained spontaneously breathing under isoflurane anesthesia with no respiratory support.

Objective: Pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation typically necessitates protracted ventilator support, yet not much is known about the use of tracheostomy in the pediatric subpopulation. The study was designed with an objective to quantify the prevalence of tracheostomy in children with respiratory/cardiac failure requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and to compare outcomes for patients undergoing early, late, and no tracheostomy.
Methods: Data of patients <18 years of age who underwent extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for respiratory/cardiac failure between 2009 and 2015 were obtained from the Virtual Pediatric Systems (VPS, LLC) Database.

Background: The utility of testing for urinary tract infection (UTI) in febrile infants with bronchiolitis is indeterminate.
Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate if the incidence of UTIs in febrile infants 2 to 12 months of age with bronchiolitis is higher than the presumed incidence of asymptomatic bacteriuria and determine risk factors associated with UTIs in this population.
Methods: This prospective multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted in the emergency departments of 6 children's hospitals between November 2011 and June 2015.
