Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Post-Traumatic Headache: A Systematic Review.

Purpose Of Review: To evaluate existing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies on post-traumatic headache (PTH) following traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Recent Findings: We conducted a systematic search of PubMed and Embase databases from inception to February 1, 2024. Eligible fMRI studies were required to include adult participants diagnosed with acute or persistent PTH post-TBI in accordance with any edition of the International Classification of Headache Disorders.

The value of magnetic resonance imaging of the optic nerve for the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in patients with optic neuritis.

Background: Although optic neuritis (ON) is common in multiple sclerosis (MS), lesions of the optic nerve are not included as an anatomical substrate for dissemination in space and time (DIS and DIT).

Objective: To assess the increase in sensitivity of including MRI lesions of the optic nerve for the diagnosis of MS in patients with ON.

Methods: We included patients consecutively referred with first time, monosymptomatic ON, with no known cause of the ON, who underwent orbital MRI including fat suppressed T2 and T1-sequences with and without gadolinium contrast.

Long-term cultivation of retinal pigment epithelium cells on nanofiber scaffolds.

Purpose: The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other retinal degenerative diseases. The introduction of healthy RPE cell cultures into the subretinal space offers a potential treatment strategy. The aim of this study was the long-term culture and characterisation of RPE cells on nanofiber scaffolds.

Background and design of the Physical Frailty and Symptom Monitoring and Management Behaviors in Heart Failure (PRISM-HF) study: A mixed methods study.

Background: Many adults with heart failure (HF) are physically frail and have worse outcomes. While the biological profile of physical frailty in HF has been examined, the behavioral profile remains unstudied. Physical frailty may impact self-care behaviors, particularly symptom monitoring and management (SMM), which in turn results in adverse outcomes.

Identifying internal and external shoulder rotation using a kirigami-based shoulder patch.

Internal and external rotation of the shoulder is often challenging to quantify in the clinic. Existing technologies, such as motion capture, can be expensive or require significant time to setup, collect data, and process and analyze the data. Other methods may rely on surveys or analog tools, which are subject to interpretation.

Adverse childhood experiences, resilience, and syringe services program attendance among persons who inject drugs in Northeast Georgia, USA: A mediation analysis.

Background: Syringe services programs (SSP) are evidence-based venues offering harm reduction services to persons who inject drugs (PWID), such as sterile syringes, STI/HIV testing, and linkage to care to decrease drug use-related morbidities and mortalities. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked with reduced resilience, while increased resilience can help PWID attend SSPs. This study examined the potential mediating role of resilience between ACEs and SSP attendance among PWID.

Effect of plasma levels of factor VIII according to procoagulant phospholipids on the risk of future venous thromboembolism.

Background: A high level of plasma coagulation factor (F)VIII is an established and likely causal risk factor for venous thromboembolism (VTE). Procoagulant phospholipids (PPLs) facilitate FVIII activity in coagulation.

Objectives: To assess the association between plasma levels of FVIII and risk of future VTE according to PPL clotting time (PPL), an inverse surrogate measure of plasma PPL activity.

Bilingual children reach early language milestones at the same age as monolingual peers.

In this longitudinal study, we compare the age of reaching early developmental milestones in bilingual and monolingual children and between the bilinguals' two languages. We present data from 302 Polish bilinguals (living outside of Poland with various majority languages) and 302 Polish monolinguals, aged = 12.78 months on study entry (range: 024 months), matched on sex, age at study entry, duration of parental reporting, and parental education.

Stakeholder perspectives on implementation of internet-delivered cognitive behaviour therapy in physical medicine rehabilitation setting using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research.

Introduction: Despite the growing evidence for the effects of tailored internet-delivered cognitive behaviour therapy (ICBT) programmes for those receiving physical rehabilitation, there is a lack of implementation of these programmes in a clinical or community setting. The aim of the current study was to evaluate barriers and facilitators of implementing an ICBT programme into a physical medicine rehabilitation setting.

Methods: Stakeholders with expertise in physical medicine rehabilitation were recruited (n = 25) including: 16 clinicians, 4 administrators, 3 persons with lived experience, and 2 care partners.

The Warburg effect, which describes the fermentation of glucose to lactate even in the presence of oxygen, is ubiquitous in proliferative mammalian cells, including cancer cells, but poses challenges for biopharmaceutical production as lactate accumulation inhibits cell growth and protein production. Previous efforts to eliminate lactate production in cells for bioprocessing have failed as lactate dehydrogenase is essential for cell growth. Here, we effectively eliminate lactate production in Chinese hamster ovary and in the human embryonic kidney cell line HEK293 by simultaneous knockout of lactate dehydrogenases and pyruvate dehydrogenase kinases, thereby removing a negative feedback loop that typically inhibits pyruvate conversion to acetyl-CoA.

Genetic predisposition to altered blood cell homeostasis is associated with glioma risk and survival.

Glioma is a highly fatal and heterogeneous brain tumor with few known risk factors. Our study examines genetically predicted variability in blood cell indices in relation to glioma risk and survival in 3418 cases and 8156 controls. We find that increased platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) confers an increased risk of glioma (odds ratio (OR) = 1.

Structural and Dynamic Heterogeneity of Deep Eutectic Solvents Composed of Choline Chloride and Ortho-Phenol Derivatives.

Structural, thermal, and dynamic properties of four deep eutectic solvents comprising choline chloride paired with phenolic derivative hydrogen-bond donors were probed using experiments and molecular simulations. The hydrogen-bond donors include phenol, catechol, -chlorophenol, and o-cresol, in a 3:1 mixture with the hydrogen-bond acceptor choline chloride. Density, viscosity, and pulsed-field gradient NMR diffusivity measurements were conducted over a range of temperatures.

Absorption cross section of gas phase isoprene in the infrared-visible range.

We have recorded the gas phase spectrum of isoprene at room temperature from the mid-infrared range and into the visible range (600 cm to 17050 cm). Absorption spectra were obtained by Fourier transform infrared, conventional dispersion ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared and cavity ring-down spectroscopy to cover the entire range with a resolution comparable to that of the instruments on the James Webb Space Telescope. We have assigned the CH-stretching fundamental and overtone bands corresponding to the Δv=1-6 transitions based on anharmonic vibrational calculations using normal mode and local mode models, for the lower- and higher-energy regions, respectively.

Esophageal Candida Infection and Esophageal Cancer Risk in Patients With Achalasia.

Importance: Patients with achalasia face a higher risk of developing esophageal cancer (EC), but the surveillance strategies for these patients remain controversial due to the long disease duration and the lack of identified risk factors.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of esophageal Candida infection among patients with achalasia and to assess the association of Candida infection with EC risk within this population.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This retrospective cohort study included patients with achalasia diagnosed at or referred for treatment and monitoring to the Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, between January 1, 1980, and May 31, 2024.

Fracture liaison service (FLS) is associated with lower subsequent fragility fracture risk and mortality: NoFRACT (the Norwegian capture the fracture initiative).

Unlabelled: Subsequent fracture rates and associated mortality were compared before and after the introduction of fracture liaison service (FLS). In 100,198 women and men, FLS was associated with 13% and 10% lower risk of subsequent fragility fractures and 18% and 15% lower mortality. The study suggests that FLS may prevent fractures.

Introduction: Myocardial dysfunction and the presence of calcified and non-calcified coronary plaques are predictors of cardiovascular disease. Masculinizing gender-affirming hormone therapy may increase cardiovascular risk, highlighting the need for prospective studies to evaluate cardiovascular outcomes during gender-affirming hormone therapy.

Objectives: To evaluate changes in cardiac morphology, systolic and diastolic function, and development of coronary plaques after masculinizing gender-affirming hormone therapy.

Pipeline for development of acylated peptide based CGRP receptor antagonist with extended half-life for migraine treatment.

Migraine is a debilitating headache disorder. The disease has neurovascular origin and migraine attacks can be elicited by vasodilative neuropeptides such as alpha calcitonin gene-related peptide (αCGRP). Antagonizing CGRP actions in migraine patients has proven clinically efficient.

Development of the First-in-Class FEM1B-Recruiting Histone Deacetylase Degraders.

Targeted protein degradation (TPD) represents a promising alternative to conventional occupancy-driven protein inhibition. Despite the existence of more than 600 E3 ligases in the human proteome, so far only a few have been utilized for TPD of histone deacetylases (HDACs), which represent important epigenetic anticancer drug targets. In this study, we disclose the first-in-class Fem-1 homologue B (FEM1B)-recruiting HDAC degraders.

A nationwide registry-based cohort study of the association between childhood dental caries and gingivitis with type 2 diabetes in adulthood.

Background: Evidence suggests a bidirectional relationship between oral health status and type 2 diabetes (T2D) in adults. Studies on associations between childhood oral health and T2D in adulthood are lacking.

Methods: This is a nationwide Danish registry-based cohort study of individuals born between 1963 and 1972, having at least one registration in the National Child Odontology Registry between 1972 and 1987 (n = 627,758).

Improving skin screening capabilities for Veterans with spinal cord injuries.

Context: Clinical Practice Guidelines from the Consortium for Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Medicine recommend daily self-screening of at-risk skin surfaces, but many Veterans with SCI describe challenges using the standard issue long-handled self-inspection mirror (LSIM).

Objective: The objective of this project was to compare the LSIM to a recently developed camera-based self-inspection system (CSIS). User feedback guided iterative engineering to improve and develop the new technology in preparation for transfer to industry.

Return to sports after pediatric traumatic brain injury: An expert panel survey.

Background: There are no evidence based guidelines for clinicians to follow in advising pediatric patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) on return to play (RTP).

Objective: To understand practice patterns of experts in pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) in relation to how they assess severity of TBI and guide return to play (RTP) decisions with their patients who sustain complicated mild, moderate, or severe TBI.

Design: Cross-sectional web-based survey.

Consensus on Symptom Selection for Endometriosis Questionnaires: A Modified e-Delphi Study.

Objective: To build consensus on most important symptoms and related consequences for use in questionnaires to characterise individuals with suspected and confirmed endometriosis in the general population.

Design: A questionnaire of 107 symptoms and related consequences of endometriosis was collaboratively developed by patients, medical doctors and researchers and further assessed in a two-round e-Delphi study. Participants assessed the relevance of the symptoms, and a priori it was decided that 70% was the threshold for inclusion of a symptom.

Magnitude of female child sexual abuse in Ethiopia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Child sexual abuse is a grave issue with significant consequences for the well-being and development of children worldwide. Understanding the scope of this problem is essential, particularly in Ethiopia, where protecting the nation's youth is crucial. Although child sexual abuse is a critical issue, there is a lack of comprehensive assessment of its prevalence and associated factors in Ethiopia.
