Electronic Personal Health Records (EPHRs) are potentially effective tools for improving the continuity and quality of care for migrants and refugees, and specifically for undocumented migrants (UDMs). However, little is known about the intention and preconditions of healthcare providers (HCPs) to use an EPHR for UDM in the Netherlands. Between April 2023 and June 2023, thirteen interviews, using a semi-structured topic guide, were conducted with Dutch HCPs.

Rapid non-invasive measurement of mitochondrial oxygen tension after microneedle pre-treatment: a feasibility study in human volunteers.

J Clin Monit Comput

December 2024

Department of Critical Care, University Medical Center Groningen, University of Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Mitochondrial oxygen tension (MitoPO2) is a promising novel non-invasive bedside marker of circulatory shock and is associated with organ failure. The measurement of mitoPO2 requires the topical application of 5-aminolevulinc acid (ALA) to induce sufficient concentrations of the fluorescent protein protoporphyrin-IX within (epi)dermal cells. Currently, its clinical potential in guiding resuscitation therapies is limited by the long induction time prior to obtaining a reliable measurement signal.

Statins' effect on quality of life and functioning in older stroke patients: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

J Clin Neurosci

December 2024

Department of Neurology, Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Department of Neurology, OLVG hospital, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Electronic address:

Background: Limited evidence exists on the efficacy and safety of statins in older ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack patients, particularly in frail individuals. Studies often exclude frail patients, limiting insights on optimal treatments for the entire older population. This review aims to evaluate the effect of statins for secondary prevention on quality of life and functioning in older patients following an ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack, as these outcomes are aligned with the treatment goals of this patient population.

This European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) guideline provides recommendations for the management of IgE-mediated food allergy and was developed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) approach. Following the confirmation of IgE-mediated food allergy diagnosis, allergen avoidance and dietary advice (with support of a specialised dietitian, if possible) together with the provision of a written treatment plan, education on the recognition of allergic symptoms and prescription of medication including adrenaline using an auto-injector are essential. Patients with significant anxiety and requirement for coping strategies may benefit from support from a clinical psychologist.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to evaluate the accuracy of four different trigger tools (OPERAM, STOPP/START, ADR-tool, and QUADRAT) in identifying medication-related hospital readmissions compared to clinical adjudication done by healthcare professionals.
  • The analysis involved 1,111 readmissions, with 181 classified as medication-related, and the majority were identified by the OPERAM tool, which accurately found 92% of MRRs.
  • Results showed that while OPERAM was the most effective in identifying both overall and preventable MRRs, the other tools had significantly lower identification rates, raising questions about their utility in real-world practice.

  • Immune checkpoint inhibition (ICI) combined with chemotherapy is the standard treatment for stage II-III triple-negative breast cancer, but the effectiveness of ICI alone remains unclear.
  • The adaptive BELLINI trial found that short-term ICI treatments led to immune activation in a significant portion of patients, correlating immune response with tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes.
  • A new cohort is being studied with patients who have high levels of these lymphocytes; early results show a notable rate of major and complete pathological responses post-treatment, suggesting that neoadjuvant ICI could be a promising approach without chemotherapy.
