Interprofessional education is one of the interventions used to increase health care students' motivation for working with older patients. Previous research about such interventions has been conducted without the use of control groups and has given inconclusive results. The objective of the present curricular resource was: Does geriatric paper-based interprofessional education influence students' interest in treating older people? During a one-year period, undergraduate fourth-year medical and third-year nursing students wrote four health care plans for four different paper-based older patient cases.

Article Synopsis
  • Clinical guidelines are evidence-based recommendations created by experts to help healthcare providers and patients make informed decisions about health conditions, ultimately improving healthcare quality and tailored care.
  • The European Hernia Society (EHS) guidelines specifically assist surgeons in managing abdominal wall defects with reliable answers to their clinical questions, traditionally developed through consensus among key opinion leaders.
  • The GRADE method enhances the quality of these guidelines by providing a structured approach to evaluating evidence and making recommendations, addressing challenges in guideline production and advocating for dedicated research groups to improve adherence to this methodology.

Ten-Year Outcome of Recanalization or Medical Therapy for Concomitant Chronic Total Occlusion After Myocardial Infarction.

J Am Heart Assoc

May 2024

Department of Cardiology, Heart Center, Amsterdam UMC, Location AMC Amsterdam Cardiovascular Sciences Amsterdam the Netherlands.

Article Synopsis
  • - The EXPLORE trial was a 10-year study comparing chronic total occlusion (CTO) percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to no-CTO PCI in patients who had a ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).
  • - The trial found that after a median follow-up of 10 years, there was no significant difference in major adverse cardiac events or overall mortality between the two groups, but the CTO PCI group experienced higher cardiovascular mortality.
  • - Although the CTO PCI group had more effective relief from dyspnea (83% vs. 65%), the findings suggest that the benefits of symptom relief should be carefully considered against the increased risk of cardiovascular mortality.

Article Synopsis
  • - Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) involves high blood pressure in the lungs due to blood clots, and riociguat is a drug used for patients who can't undergo surgery or have leftover symptoms after surgery.
  • - This study investigates how riociguat affects the interaction between platelets (blood cells that help with clotting) and endothelial cells (cells lining blood vessels) in CTEPH patients, particularly looking at its impact on hemostasis (the process of stopping bleeding).
  • - Results showed that riociguat reduced platelet adhesion and the formation of von Willebrand Factor (VWF) strings, a key factor for platelet adhesion, possibly due to decreased P-selectin expression on

Background: Critically ill COVID-19 patients are in a hypercoagulable state with increased risk of thrombotic complications. Rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) is a viscoelastic test with the potential to reflect COVID-19-associated hypercoagulability and may therefore be useful to predict thrombotic complications.

Objective: To investigate the potential of ROTEM profiles to predict thrombotic complications in critically ill COVID-19 patients.

Do symptoms of anxiety and/or depression and pain intensity before primary Total knee arthroplasty influence reason for revision? Results of an observational study from the Dutch arthroplasty register in 56,233 patients.

Gen Hosp Psychiatry

September 2022

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Leiden University Medical Centre, Leiden, the Netherlands; Department of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery, Joint Research, OLVG Hospital, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

Objective: Anxiety, depression and greater pain intensity before total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may increase the probability of revision surgery for remaining symptoms even without clear pathology or technical issues. We aimed to assess whether preoperative anxiety/depression and pain intensity are associated with revision TKA for less clear indications.

Methods: Less clear indications for revision were defined after a Delphi process in which consensus was reached among 59 orthopaedic knee experts.

Background: Recent reports indicate that the prevalence of food allergy is increasing, but accurate estimates remain a challenge due to cross-reactivity and limited use of precise diagnostic methods. Molecular allergy diagnostics, in which sensitization to individual molecular allergens is measured, is emerging as a promising tool for evaluation of sensitization profiles. In this systematic review, we summarized estimates of prevalence of sensitization to molecular food allergens in the general population in Europe.

The incidence of venous thrombosis, mostly pulmonary embolism (PE), ranging from local immunothrombosis to central emboli, but also deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in people with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is reported to be remarkably high. The relevance of better understanding, predicting, treating, and preventing COVID-19-associated venous thrombosis meets broad support, as can be concluded from the high number of research, review, and guideline papers that have been published on this topic. The Dutch COVID & Thrombosis Coalition (DCTC) is a multidisciplinary team involving a large number of Dutch experts in the broad area of venous thrombosis and hemostasis research, combined with experts on virology, critically ill patients, pulmonary diseases, and community medicine, across all university hospitals and many community hospitals in the Netherlands.

Purpose: An estimated 20% of health care expenditures are wasteful. Educational interventions aimed at reducing waste by delivering high-value, cost-conscious care (HV3C) often focus on the role of the physician. This study sought to understand how attending physicians, who have a central role in the workplace, prepare residents to provide HV3C.

The pathology of medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS) is unknown. Studies suggest that MTSS is a bony overload injury, but histological evidence is sparse. The presence of microdamage, and its potential association with targeted remodeling, could provide evidence for the pathogenesis of MTSS.
