Substance use remains a timely and important community need to understand and address. Nonprofit hospitals are in a unique position to identify needs and develop programs in response to substance use challenges in their communities. To better understand how nonprofit hospitals do this, we collected data from community health needs assessments and their corresponding implementation strategy (IS) to address these needs for a 20% random sample of hospitals in each state of the United States over 2 periods (2015-2018 and 2019-2021).

  • * It found that stronger beliefs in equal childcare (both in what is considered normal and what should be the case) are associated with the availability of parental leave policies.
  • * While the data suggests that changes in parental leave policies can shift perceptions of social norms over time, the study acknowledges that it cannot definitively determine cause-and-effect relationships due to its cross-sectional design.

The freshwater red alga Batrachospermum gelatinosum has a well-documented distribution spanning historically glaciated and unglaciated eastern North America. This alga has no known desiccation-resistant propagule; thus, long-distance dispersal events are likely rare. We predicted strong genetic structure among drainage basins and admixture among sites within basins.

Influence of endothelial nitric oxide synthase haplotypes on nitric oxide and peroxynitrite productions.

Bioelectrochemistry

February 2025

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Ohio University, Athens, OH, USA. Electronic address:

The impact of four clinically significant genetic variants of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) polymorphisms on the concentrations of nitric oxide [NO] and peroxynitrite [ONOO] has been given scant consideration. This study utilized a [NO]/[ONOO] ratio to determine the extent of endothelial dysfunction caused by these variations in the eNOS gene. The single nucleotide polymorphisms (T-786C, C-665T, and Glu298Asp) and a variable number of tandem repeats (intron 4 a/b/c) were genotyped in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), using sanger sequencing and DNA electrophoresis, respectively.

In the presence of a strong magnetic field such as for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ferromagnetic objects may become a source of patient or healthcare provider injury. To prevent such problems, careful screening of patients and healthcare workers is mandatory prior to MRI to identify contraindications to MRI including the presence of external or internal ferromagnetic products. We present a 2-year, 11-month-old child who presented for MRI to evaluate a potential vertebral anomaly.

  • This study investigates whether later-born individuals experience a slower rate of cognitive decline, specifically in verbal fluency, compared to earlier-born cohorts as they age.
  • By analyzing data from the English Longitudinal Study of Aging, researchers developed adjusted norms and used advanced statistical models to observe differences across various age groups.
  • Results indicate that later-born individuals consistently show less decline in verbal fluency and higher overall performance than earlier-born cohorts, highlighting significant cohort effects in cognitive aging.

Sci Rep

October 2024

Faculty of Chinese Medicine, State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine, and University Hospital, Macau University of Science and Technology, Macau, Macao SAR, China.

Background We aimed to pinpoint biomarkers, create a diagnostic model for ulcerative colitis (UC), and delve into its immune features to better understand this autoimmune condition. Methods The sequencing data for both the UC and the control groups were obtained from GEO, including both bulk and single-cell data. Using GSE87466 as training group, we applied differential analysis, WGCNA, PPI, LASSO, RF, and SVM-RFE for biomarker selection.

Article Synopsis
  • Individuals with ADHD are more likely to begin using substances during adolescence and struggle with substance use as adults, but the effects of psychosocial treatment for ADHD on substance use are not well understood.
  • In a study involving predominantly Latinx and Black rising ninth graders with ADHD, those who received a high-intensity treatment program were more likely to start using substances by the end of high school compared to those who received a lower intensity intervention.
  • The findings suggest that certain youths, particularly those with PTSD symptoms, may benefit from high-intensity treatment in terms of reduced substance use, highlighting the need for further research on the risks and benefits of ADHD treatments for different populations.

  • The Lisfranc complex refers to the connection between the medial cuneiform and the second metatarsal base, commonly injured in high-impact activities.
  • A study reviewed the outcomes of 99 patients who received surgical fixation for Lisfranc injuries, divided into those treated within 24 hours and those treated later.
  • The results indicated that early surgical treatment did not lead to better outcomes compared to delayed fixation, although there was a slight increase in superficial infections in the early treatment group.

  • Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) poses a significant risk in shale gas fields due to hydraulic fracturing fluids, which can foster problematic microbiomes.
  • In an experiment, modifications to biocide DBNPA using specific d-amino acids showed enhanced effectiveness in reducing corrosion on X80 carbon steel, achieving significant reductions in weight loss and corrosion current.
  • The results suggest that low doses of d-tyrosine can notably boost biocide performance, while insights into biofilm interactions indicate that extracellular electron transfer might be a key factor in the corrosion process.

Shape symmetry breaking in the formation of inorganic nanostructures is of significant current interest. It was typically achieved through the growth of colloidal nanoparticles with adsorbed chiral molecules. Photochemical processes induced through asymmetric plasmon excitation by circularly polarized light in surface immobilized nanostructures also led to symmetry breaking.

Introduction: Adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may be at risk for early, escalating patterns of alcohol and substance use via academic, peer, and familial impairment. Existing school-based interventions for youth with ADHD effectively target these risk factors, yet their effects on alcohol and substance use have not been explored. We examined the immediate and long-term alcohol and substance use outcomes of an evidence-based school-based intervention for adolescents with ADHD.

Microplastics alter toxicity of the insecticide Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis to chironomid larvae in different ways depending on particle size.

Sci Total Environ

December 2024

Department of Biological Sciences, Ohio University, Athens, OH 45701, United States of America; Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service, Ohio University, Athens, OH 45701, United States of America. Electronic address:

Microplastics (<5 mm) are emerging freshwater contaminants that can have a wide range of effects on aquatic biota. One concern is that combined effects of microplastics (MPs) with other stressors, such as co-occurring contaminants in urban or agricultural runoff may be significant even when the direct effects of MPs may be modest. Despite the frequent detection of both insecticides and MPs in freshwater ecosystems, there is a lack of co-exposure studies of insecticides (especially Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti)) and MPs.

Background: The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) questionnaires are commonly used to measure global cognition in clinical trials. Because these scales are discrete and bounded with ceiling and floor effects and highly skewed, their analysis as continuous outcomes presents challenges. Normality assumptions of linear regression models are usually violated, which may result in failure to detect associations with variables of interest.
