Sex-specific heart failure burden across the United States: Global burden of disease 1990-2019.

Am Heart J

March 2024

Harrington Heart and Vascular Institute, University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, OH; Section of Advanced Heart Failure and Transplantation, University Hospitals, Cleveland, OH. Electronic address:

Background: Heart failure (HF) has unique aspects that vary by biological sex. Thus, understanding sex-specific trends of HF in the US population is crucial to develop targeted interventions. We aimed to analyze the burden of HF in female and male patients across the US, from 1990 to 2019.

Alzheimer`s disease mortality in the United States: Cross-sectional analysis of county-level socio-environmental factors.

Arch Gerontol Geriatr

December 2023

Harrington Heart and Vascular Institute, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, Cleveland, OH, United States; Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, OH, United States. Electronic address:

Background: Geographical disparities in mortality among Alzheimer`s disease (AD) patients have been reported and complex sociodemographic and environmental determinants of health (SEDH) may be contributing to this variation. Therefore, we aimed to explore high-risk SEDH factors possibly associated with all-cause mortality in AD across US counties using machine learning (ML) methods.

Methods: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of individuals ≥65 years with any underlying cause of death but with AD in the multiple causes of death certificate (ICD-10,G30) between 2016 and 2020.

Ameliorating Cardiovascular Risk in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes.

Endocrinol Metab Clin North Am

March 2023

University Hospitals Harrington Heart and Vascular Institute, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, 11100 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44106, USA. Electronic address:

Patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) are at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), which constitutes the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in these patients. Intensive CVD risk factor control can ameliorate the elevated CVD associated with T2D. In this review, we provide an overview of CVD risk factor control, including traditional (blood pressure, glycemia, lipid, thrombosis, and lifestyle modifications) and nontraditional (social and environmental determinants of health) in patients with T2D, including evidence on management and outcomes.

Neighborhood Walkability and Cardiovascular Risk in the United States.

Curr Probl Cardiol

March 2023

Harrington Heart and Vascular Institute, University Hospitals, Cleveland, OH. Electronic address:

Neighborhood walkability may be associated with increased physical activity and thus may confer protection against cardiovascular disease and associated risk factors. We sought to characterize the association between neighborhood-level cardiovascular diseases and risk factors with neighborhood walkability across US census tracts. We linked the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) PLACES dataset which provided census-tract level prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) and cardiovascular risk factors (hypertension, high cholesterol, obesity, and diabetes), with census tract population-weighted national walkability index (NWI) from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Association between status epilepticus and cardiorespiratory comorbidity in patients with epilepsy: A population-based study.

Epilepsy Behav

October 2022

Department of Neurology, University Hospitals of Cleveland Medical Center, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, OH, USA. Electronic address:

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between status epilepticus (SE) and cardiorespiratory comorbidity in patients with epilepsy.

Methods: We conducted a population-based study using cloud-based aggregated electronic medical records from >53 million patients in the US (Explorys, IBM Watson; January 1999 to November 2020). During the study period, we identified patients with epilepsy with SE.

Socioeconomic Deprivation and Premature Cardiovascular Mortality in the United States.

Mayo Clin Proc

June 2022

Harrington Heart and Vascular Institute, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, Cleveland, OH, USA; School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, USA. Electronic address:

Objective: To determine the variability in county cardiovascular (CV) premature mortality explained by integrated metrics of socioeconomic deprivation and to explore temporal trends in CV mortality by county socioeconomic deprivation.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional analysis of US county-level death certificate data from 1999 to 2018 of age-adjusted premature (25 to 64 years) CV mortality. Integrated metrics of socioeconomic deprivation (Social Deprivation Index [SDI] and county Area Deprivation Index [ADI]) were associated with mortality using linear regression analysis.

Non-invasive Imaging in the Evaluation of Cardiac Allograft Vasculopathy in Heart Transplantation: A Systematic Review.

Curr Probl Cardiol

August 2022

Harrington Heart and Vascular Institute, University Hospitals and School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH. Electronic address:

Cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) is the leading cause of long-term graft dysfunction in patients with heart transplantation and is linked with significant morbidity and mortality. Currently, the gold standard for diagnosing CAV is coronary imaging with intravascular ultrasound during traditional invasive coronary angiography. Invasive imaging, however, carries increased procedural risk and expense to patients in addition to requiring an experienced interventionalist.

Outcomes of cardiac diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) in the rituximab era.

Int J Cardiol

September 2021

Harrington Heart and Vascular Institute, University Hospitals, Cleveland, OH, United States of America; School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, United States of America. Electronic address:

Background Cardiac diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (cDLBCL) is an extremely rare disease. Introduction of rituximab has significantly improved survival in non-cardiac DLBCL, but there is limited data regarding the effects on outcomes in cDLBCL. We sought to evaluate the outcomes of cDLBCL in both pre- and rituximab eras.

Endothelin-1 and peak oxygen consumption in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

Heart Lung

April 2021

Harrington Heart and Vascular Institute, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, USA. Electronic address:

Background: Mechanisms of exercise intolerance in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) are not well understood. Pulmonary hypertension, a common accompaniment in patients with HFpEF, is associated with poor outcomes. While Endothelin -1 (ET-1) plays a mechanistic role in pulmonary hypertension, its role in exercise intolerance in HFpEF is not well established.
