Photocontrollable luminescent molecular switches capable of changing emitting color have been regarded as the ideal integration between intelligent and luminescent materials. A remaining challenge is to combine good luminescence properties with wide range of wavelength transformation, especially when confined in a single molecular system that forms well-defined nanostructures. Here, we report a π-expanded photochromic molecular photoswitch, which allows for the comprehensive achievements including wide emission wavelength variation (240 nm wide, 400-640 nm), high photoisomerization extent (95%), and pure emission color (<100 nm of full width at half maximum).

The study of underwater walking presents major challenges because the small forces applied during underwater walking are difficult to measure due to the lack of a sufficiently sensitive force plate that functions underwater. Understanding the force interaction between the underwater walker and the substrate may lead to better understanding of the evolution, ecology, and biomechanics of underwater walking. The shift from aquatic to terrestrial life was a crucial transition in animal evolution where, underwater walking preceded the invasion of land and combines mechanics from terrestrial locomotion (substrate reaction forces) and aquatic swimming (buoyancy and drag).

Rivers and streams contribute to global carbon cycling by decomposing immense quantities of terrestrial plant matter. However, decomposition rates are highly variable and large-scale patterns and drivers of this process remain poorly understood. Using a cellulose-based assay to reflect the primary constituent of plant detritus, we generated a predictive model (81% variance explained) for cellulose decomposition rates across 514 globally distributed streams.

This study presents a novel hybrid control strategy for single-link flexible-joint robot manipulators, addressing inherent uncertainties and nonlinear dynamics. By integrating nonlinear reduced-order active disturbance rejection control (NRADRC) with backstepping control, the proposed method effectively estimates and mitigates nonlinear dynamics and external disturbances. Utilizing a nonlinear reduced-order extended state observer (NRESO) enhances resilience to internal and external uncertainties.

8-oxoguanines (8-oxoG) in cells form compromised G-quadruplexes (GQs), which may vary GQ mediated gene regulations. By mimicking molecularly crowded cellular environment using 40% DMSO or sucrose, here it is found that oxidized human telomeric GQs have stabilities close to the wild-type (WT) GQs. Surprisingly, while WT GQs show negative formation cooperativity between a Pt(II) binder and molecularly crowded environment, positive cooperativity is observed for oxidized GQ formation.

We create high-aspect-ratio dynamic poly-regional surface topographies in a coating of a main-chain liquid crystal oligomer network (LCON). The topographies form at the topological defects in the director pattern organized in an array which are controlled by photopatterning of the alignment layer. The defect regions are activated by heat and/or light irradiation to form reversible topographic structures.

We apply the Migdal-Eliashberg theory of superconductivity to heavy-fermion and mixed valence materials. Specifically, we extend the Anderson lattice model to a case when there exists a strong coupling between itinerant electrons and lattice vibrations. Using the saddle-point approximation, we derive a set of coupled nonlinear equations which describe competition between the crossover to a heavy-fermion or mixed-valence regimes and conventional superconductivity.

Madagascar's high rates of endemism, paired with its escalating deforestation rates, has made it one of the most important conservation priorities on the planet. In southeastern Madagascar, the Corridor Forestier d'Ambositra Vondrozo (COFAV) is an unprotected rainforest corridor that sustains ∼15 species of lemurs, most of which are endangered. The COFAV connects many protected areas and is therefore essential for gene flow, dispersal, and the long-term sustainability of animal populations in the area.

Putative G-quadruplex forming sequences (PQS) have been identified in promoter sequences of prominent genes that are implicated among others in cancer and neurological disorders. We explored mechanistic aspects of CRISPR-dCas9-mediated gene expression regulation, which is transient and sequence specific unlike alternative approaches that lack such specificity or create permanent mutations, using the PQS in tyrosine hydroxylase () and promoters as model systems. We performed ensemble and single molecule investigations to study whether G-quadruplex (GQ) structures or dCas9 impede T7 RNA polymerase (RNAP) elongation process and whether orientation of these factors is significant.

New psychoactive substances (NPS) are typically synthesized in clandestine laboratories in an attempt to chemically modify already federally regulated drugs in an effort to circumvent the law. Drugs derived from a phenethylamine pharmacophore, such as 4-chloroamphetamine and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), reliably induce thermogenesis and serotonergic deficits in the striatum and hippocampus of rodents. 4-methylamphetamine (4-MA), a relative newcomer to the NPS scene, was originally investigated in the mid-1900 s as a potential anorexigenic agent.
