A novel and new type of tetracycline with a different mechanism of action was necessary, due to the drug resistance of existing tetracyclines. This study outlines the synthesis and antibacterial evaluation of anhydro-tetracycline derivatives, which are unconventional tetracyclines with unique mechanisms of action. These derivatives include C4-NH, C4-OH, and C9-substituted variations, and our synthetic approach focuses on semi-synthesis using natural tetracyclines as the starting precursors.

For the typical ESIPT process, the proton transfer process is often completed via the intramolecular hydrogen bond (IHB) with oxygen or nitrogen as proton donor or proton acceptor. In recent years, the ESIPT process for sulfur-containing hydrogen bonds has received more and more attention, but it has been rarely reported. We systematically studied the ESIPT processes and photophysical properties of 2-(benzothiophene-2-yl)-3-hydroxy-4H-chromen-4-one (BTOH), 2-(benzothiophene-2-yl)-3-mercapto-4H-chromen-4-one (BTSH) and 2-(benzothiophen-2-yl)-3-hydroxy-4H-chromene-4-thione (BTS) at the HISSbPBE/6-31+G(d,p) and TD-HISSbPBE/6-31+G(d,p) computational level.

Enzymes catalyze molecular reactions with remarkable efficiency and selectivity under mild conditions. Photoactivated enzymes make use of a light-absorbing chromophore to drive chemical transformations, ideally using sunlight as an energy source. The direct attachment of a chromophore to native enzymes is advantageous, as information on the underlying catalytic mechanisms can be obtained.

Background: Long-term use of levodopa, a metabolic precursor of dopamine (DA) for alleviation of motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD), can cause a serious side effect known as levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID). With the development of LID, high-frequency gamma oscillations (~100 Hz) are registered in the motor cortex (MCx) in patients with PD and rats with experimental PD. Studying alterations in the activity within major components of motor networks during transition from levodopa-off state to dyskinesia can provide useful information about their contribution to the development of abnormal gamma oscillations and LID.

A critical reaction affecting the oxidation chemistry in the middle-to-upper atmosphere occurs between hydroxyl (OH) and hydroperoxyl (HO). The reaction rate coefficient for OH + HO → HO + O, here called , has challenged laboratory kineticists for 50 years. However, several measurements from the past 30 years had approached a rough consensus until the publication of a new study that examined, for the first time, the water vapor dependence of this reaction.

The ability to quench reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduced in plant chloroplasts under light stress conditions is essential for securing plant photosynthetic performance and agricultural yield. Although genetic engineering can enhance plant stress resistance, its widespread application faces limitations due to challenges in successful transformation across plant species and public acceptance concerns. This study proposes a nontransgenic chemical approach using a designed chimeric peptide that scavenges ROS within plant chloroplasts for managing light stress.

Trace measurement of aerosol chemical composition in workplace atmospheres requires the development of high-throughput aerosol collectors that are compact, hand-portable, and can be operated using personal pumps. We describe the design and characterization of a compact, high flow, Turbulent-mixing Condensation Aerosol-in-Liquid Concentrator (TCALC) that allows direct collection of aerosols as liquid suspensions, for off-line chemical, biological, or microscopy analysis. The TCALC unit, measuring approximately 12 × 16 × 18 cm, operates at an aerosol sample flowrate of up to 10 L min, using rapid mixing of a hot flow saturated with water vapor and a cold aerosol sample flow, thereby promoting condensational growth of aerosol particles.
