Surface Reconstruction of An Integrated CoO-Co2Mo3O8 electrode Enabling Efficient Ampere-Level Hydrogen Evolution in Alkaline Water or Seawater.

To accelerate the water dissociation in the Volmer step and alleviate the destruction of bubbles to the physical structure of catalysts during the alkaline hydrogen evolution, an integrated electrode of cobalt oxide and cobalt-molybdenum oxide grown on Ni foam, named CoO-Co2Mo3O8, is designed. This integrated electrode enhances the catalyst-substrate interaction confirmed by a micro-indentation tester, and thus hinders the destruction of the physical structure of catalysts caused by bubbles. Electrochemical testing shows the occurrence of a surface reconstruction of the integrated electrode, and CoO is transformed into Co(OH)2, denoted as Co(OH)2-Co2Mo3O8.

Quantum Chemical NMR Spectroscopic Structural Analysis in Solution: The Investigation of 3-Indoleacetic Acid Dimer Formation in Chloroform and DMSO Solution.

We present a DFT-PCM NMR study of 3-indoleacetic acid (3-IAA), used as a working example, including explicit solvent molecules, named PCM-nCHCl, PCM-nDMSO (n = 0, 2, 4, 8, 14, 20, and 25), to investigate the dimer formation in solution. Apart from well-known cyclic (I) and open (II) acetic acid (AA) dimers, two new structures were located on DFT-PCM potential energy surface (PES) for 3-IAA named quasicyclic A (III) and quasicyclic B (IV), the last one having N-H…O hydrogen bond (instead of O-H…O). In addition, four other structures having π-π type interactions named V, VI, VII, and VIII were also obtained completing the sample on the PES.

Although several tactics for their management have been used, bed bugs continue to spread worldwide wherever humans reside.

Modeling the response to interleukin-21 to inform natural killer cell immunotherapy.

Natural killer (NK) cells are emerging agents for cancer therapy. Several different cytokines are used to generate NK cells for adoptive immunotherapy including interleukin (IL)-2, IL-12, IL-15 and IL-18 in solution, and membrane-bound IL-21. These cytokines drive NK cell activation through the integration of signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT) and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) pathways, which overlap and synergize, making it challenging to predict optimal cytokine combinations for both proliferation and cytotoxicity.

Continuous PPI Treatment After Gastric Bypass Increases the Risk of Pathological PTH Levels at 10 Years Postoperatively.

Background: Apart from massive weight loss, metabolic and bariatric surgery, especially gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass [RYGB]), can cause nutritional deficiencies. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI), relatively often used after RYGB, are associated with reduced calcium absorption. We have studied the long-term impact of PPI upon calcium homeostasis among RYGB patients.

Metabarcoding for the Monitoring of the Microbiome and Parasitome of Medically Important Mosquito Species in Two Urban and Semi-urban Areas of South Korea.

Interactions between microbial communities and the host can modulate mosquito biology, including vector competence. Therefore, future vector biocontrol measures will utilize these interactions and require extensive monitoring of the mosquito microbiome. Metabarcoding strategies will be useful for conducting vector monitoring on a large scale.

Background: We investigated factors associated with post-transplant growth in pediatric kidney transplant (KTx) recipients with a focus on plasma bicarbonate (HCO3) and estimated the effect of alkali treatment on growth.

Methods: In this study of the CERTAIN Registry, data were collected up to 5 years post-transplant. Generalized Additive Mixed Models were applied to assess the association between post-transplant growth and covariates.

Purpose: We examined the impact of the COVID-19 consortium recommendations on the surgical management of breast cancer during the first year of the pandemic.

Methods: Patients with newly diagnosed ER + DCIS, ER- DCIS, AJCC Stage cT1-2N0-1 ER + , HER2-, HER2 + , and triple negative breast cancer were identified from the National Cancer Database from 2018 to 2021. An interrupted time series design evaluated differences in surgical delay and use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy/immunotherapy (NAC) and endocrine therapy (NET) before and after the pandemic.

Midwives' perceived knowledge, perceptions, and experiences of managing paternal postnatal depression in Tanzania: A qualitative descriptive study.

Background: Paternal postnatal depression (PPND) is an under-recognized condition that affects new fathers' psychological and emotional well-being, which may impact family dynamics, work performance, and childcare. Despite its significance, there is limited awareness and understanding of its management and implications among midwives, especially in Africa.

Patients after thoracic surgery experience significant pain that can disrupt normal respiratory mechanics, increase the risk of respiratory complications, and impair recovery. Poorly controlled postoperative pain can develop into persistent postoperative pain. In addition, using opioids for pain control in the thoracic surgical population makes them more susceptible to opioid-related side effects due to their pre-existing comorbidities.

Recruitment Challenges and Strategies in a Technology-Based Intervention for Dementia Caregivers: Descriptive Study.

Background: Researchers have encountered challenges in recruiting unpaid caregivers of people living with Alzheimer disease and related dementias for intervention studies. However, little is known about the reasons for nonparticipation in in-home smart health interventions in community-based settings.

Objective: This study aimed to (1) assess recruitment rates in a smart health technology intervention for caregivers of people living with Alzheimer disease and related dementias and reasons for nonparticipation among them and (2) discuss lessons learned from recruitment challenges and strategies to improve recruitment.

Introduction: Cystic echinococcosis is a widely endemic helminthic disease caused by infection with metacestodes (larval stage) of the Echinococcus granulosus tapeworm, which is transmitted by dogs and found on every continent except Antarctica. We sought to review the life cycle, epidemiology, symptoms, diagnostic methods, and treatment of Echinococcus granulosus of the liver.

Methods: A comprehensive review was conducted using Medline/PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, and the Web of Science accessed between 1990 and 2024.

Theoretical and practical considerations for validating antigen-specific B cell ImmunoSpot assays.

Owing to their ability to reliably detect even very rare antigen-specific B cells in cellular isolates such as peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), and doing so robustly in a high throughput-compatible manner, B cell ELISPOT/FluoroSpot (collectively "B cell ImmunoSpot") tests have become increasingly attractive for immune monitoring in regulated settings. Presently, there are no guidelines for the qualification and validation of B cell ImmunoSpot assay results. Here, we propose such guidelines, building on the experience acquired from T cell ImmunoSpot testing in an environment adhering to the requirements of regulatory bodies yet taking the unique features of B cell assays into account.

Chemical associations of selenium oxyanions in metal oxides derived from layered double hydroxides: Implication for the immobilization of radionuclides.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) can effectively stabilize Se oxyanions, yet the thermal stability of Se oxyanions incorporated into LDHs remains unclear. In this study, calcination products of three types of LDHs loaded with SeO2- 3 or SeO2-4 were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS) and leaching tests. It has been found that SeO2-4 can be reduced to SeO2- 3 in the Fe-containing LDHs after calcination at temperatures above 450 °C.

Analysis of multi-class unregulated organic compounds in soil and biosolids using LC-MS/MS.

Numerous unregulated organic compounds (UOCs) including pharmaceuticals, opioids, and personal care products (PCPs) end up in wastewater. UOC presence in biosolids (a wastewater treatment byproduct), which are applied to soil for different reasons raises environmental and health risk concerns. In this study, two multi-class extraction methods were developed and validated to target 111 UOCs from 8 different major families simultaneously in biosolids and biosolids-impacted soil.

Surveying helix 12 dynamics within constitutively active estrogen receptors using bipartite tetracysteine display.

Somatic Y537S and D538G mutations within the estrogen receptor alpha ligand-binding domain (ERα-LBD) have been linked to enhanced cell proliferation, survival, and metastases in ER-positive breast cancers. Such mutations are thought to confer ligand-independent receptor activation by increasing the flexibility of helix 12 (H12), a segment within the ERα-LBD that acts as a dynamic regulator of ERα activity. We employed bipartite tetracysteine display coupled with the biarsenical profluorophore FlAsH-EDT to monitor ligand-independent structural transitions of H12 in ERα-LBDs that include Y537S or D538G mutations.

Hyphae are viscoelastic tubes whose internal pressure pushes the cell membrane against the inner surface of the cell wall. Catalytic yielding of the wall allows this turgor to force its polymers apart as new materials are added to the surface of the growing tip. Turgor drops slightly as the wall expands, creating a pressure gradient that causes the cytoplasm to flow toward the tip.

Introduction: Buprenorphine is a highly effective medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD; OUD), which can be prescribed alongside naloxone in the primary care setting as part of a harm reduction approach to OUD. Despite this potential, implementation challenges have limited adoption of MOUD. To address barriers at the organizational level, we need better tools to measure perceived organizational support for the treatment of OUD and use of MOUD in the primary care setting.

Different forms of stigma and rural primary care professionals' willingness to prescribe buprenorphine.

Introduction: Buprenorphine and other medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are highly effective but substantially under prescribed in the rural United States. Among the most cited barriers to buprenorphine prescribing is stigma, yet little progress has been made in developing successful strategies to reduce stigma and increase access to life-saving medication. One of the key challenges to developing successful implementation strategies is understanding the different types of stigma that limit implementation.
