We have investigated the folding and assembly behavior of a cystine-based dimeric diamide bearing pyrene units and solubilizing alkyl chains. In low-polarity solvents, it forms a 14-membered ring through double intramolecular hydrogen bonds between two diamide units. The spectroscopic studies revealed that the folded state is thermodynamically unstable and eventually transforms into more energetically stable helical supramolecular polymers that show an enhanced chiral excitonic coupling between the transition dipoles of the pyrene units.

Fermented maize starch, called ogi in Benin, is used for preparing akpan, a traditional yoghurt-like food that contributes to the food and nutrition security of its consumers. Current ogi processing technologies used by two socio-cultural groups of Benin, namely the Fon and the Goun, and aspects of the quality of the fermented starches were studied to assess the current state-of-the-art, explore changes in key product characteristics over time and identify priorities for follow-up research to increase product quality and shelf life. A survey on processing technologies was conducted in five municipalities in south Benin and samples of maize starch were collected, which were analysed after the fermentation required to obtain ogi.

Quartz-crystal-microbalance (QCM) biosensor is a typical label-free biosensor, and its sensitivity can be greatly improved by removing electrodes and wires that would be otherwise attached to the surfaces of the quartz resonator. The wireless-electrodeless QCM biosensor was then developed using a microelectro-mechanical systems (MEMS) process, although challenges remain in the sensitivity, the coupling efficiency, and the miniaturization (or mass production). Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1), the most common form of adult muscular dystrophy, is caused by an abnormal expansion of CTG repeats in the 3' untranslated region of the dystrophia myotonica protein kinase (DMPK) gene. The expanded repeats of the DMPK mRNA form hairpin structures in vitro, which cause misregulation and/or sequestration of proteins including the splicing regulator muscleblind-like 1 (MBNL1). In turn, misregulation and sequestration of such proteins result in the aberrant alternative splicing of diverse mRNAs and underlie, at least in part, DM1 pathogenesis.

Multiplexed quantitative proteomics using tandem mass tag (TMT) is increasingly used in -omic study of complex samples. While TMT-based proteomics has the advantages of the higher quantitative accuracy, fewer missing values, and reduced instrument analysis time, it is limited by the additional reagent cost. In addition, current TMT labeling workflows involve repeated small volume pipetting of reagents in volatile solvents, which may increase the sample-to-sample variations and is not readily suitable for high throughput applications.
