Potential Use of GLP-1 and GIP/GLP-1 Receptor Agonists for Respiratory Disorders: Where Are We at?

Medicina (Kaunas)

December 2024

School of Medicine, PROMISE Department of Health Promotion Sciences Maternal and Infantile Care, Internal Medicine and Medical Specialties, University of Palermo, 90133 Palermo, Italy.

Chronic respiratory disorders are the third leading cause of mortality globally. Consequently, there is a continuous pursuit of effective therapies beyond those currently available. The therapeutic potential of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide/GLP-1 (GIP/GLP-1) receptor agonists extends beyond the regulation of glycemia, including glucometabolic, cardiovascular, and renal effects, rendering them viable candidates, due to their mechanisms of action, for the possible treatment of respiratory disorders.

With the development of 3D bioprinting and the creation of innovative biocompatible materials, several new approaches have brought advantages to patients and surgical teams. Increasingly more bone defects are now treated using 3D-bioprinted prostheses and implementing new solutions relies on the ability of engineers and medical teams to identify methods of anchoring 3D-printed prostheses and to reveal the potential influence of bioactive materials on surrounding tissues. In this paper, we described why limb salvage surgery based on 3D bioprinting is a reliable and effective alternative to amputations, and why this approach is considered the new standard in modern medicine.

Predictive Factors for Cut-Out Risks of Unstable Trochanteric Fractures.

Cureus

November 2024

Diabetes and Endocrinology, National Institute of Diabetes, Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases-Prof. N. Paulescu, Bucharest, ROU.

Fractures of the trochanteric mass represent a significant proportion of hip fractures. These fractures often occur in the elderly due to compromised bone quality, leading to a high predisposition for instability at the fracture site. The study was conducted through a retrospective analysis of 1,259 hospitalizations in the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology of the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital between 2022 and 2023, including patients with various types of trochanteric mass fractures: basicervical, per trochanteric, intertrochanteric, subtrochanteric, and trochanter-diaphyseal fractures.

Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of baseline body mass index (BMI) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) on the effectiveness and safety of initiating iGlarLixi (insulin glargine 100 U/ml and lixisenatide) in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) in routine clinical practice.

Methods: We pooled patient-level data from 1406 people with inadequately controlled T2D, initiating a 24-week iGlarLixi treatment. Analysis sets were based on baseline BMI and HbA1c.

CYSTATIN C-A Monitoring Perspective of Chronic Kidney Disease in Patients with Diabetes.

Int J Mol Sci

July 2024

Department of Diabetes, Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases, "Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy, 37 Dionisie Lupu Street, 030167 Bucharest, Romania.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a microvascular complication that frequently affects numerous patients diagnosed with diabetes. For the diagnosis of CKD, the guidelines recommend the identification of the urinary albumin/creatinine ratio and the determination of serum creatinine, based on which the estimated rate of glomerular filtration (eGFR) is calculated. Serum creatinine is routinely measured in clinical practice and reported as creatinine-based estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFRcr).

Obesity is an important condition affecting the quality of life of numerous patients and increasing their associated risk for multiple diseases, including tumors and immune-mediated disorders. Inflammation appears to play a major role in the development of obesity and represents a central point for the activity of cellular and humoral components in the adipose tissue. Macrophages play a key role as the main cellular component of the adipose tissue regulating the chronic inflammation and modulating the secretion and differentiation of various pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines.

It is widely known that diabetes mellitus negatively impacts both the innate immunity (the inflammatory response) and the acquired immunity (the humoral and cellular immune responses). Many patients with diabetes go on to develop chronic kidney disease, which will necessitate hemodialysis. In turn, long-term chronic hemodialysis generates an additional chronic inflammatory response and impairs acquired immunity.
