In the gut microbiota, resident bacteria prevent pathogens infection by producing specific metabolites. Among bacteria belonging to phylum , we have previously shown that or its cell-free supernatant inhibited Heidelberg translocation. In the present study, we have analyzed this supernatant to identify bioactive molecules after extraction and subsequent fractionation using a semi-preparative reversed-phase Liquid Chromatography High-Resolution Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-HRMS/MS).

The present study investigates the extent to which the COVID-19 crisis disturbed different life domains of patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and assessed the associations between these disturbances and the risk of short-term alcohol drinking. All patients aged >18 years receiving outpatient care at three addiction treatment facilities from 15 April to 30 May 2021 were eligible for inclusion in the study. A trained resident assessed the extent to which the COVID-19 crisis affected their professional activity, social life, access to healthcare, and drinking problems, together with craving, drinking behavior, psychological distress, physical/mental health, and sociodemographic and clinical data.

Background: Iron excess has been proposed as an essential factor in skeletal muscle wasting. Studies have reported correlations between muscle iron accumulation and atrophy, either through ageing or by using experimental models of secondary iron overload. However, iron treatments performed in most of these studies induced an extra-pathophysiological iron overload, more representative of intoxication or poisoning.

In hospitals through Europe and worldwide, the practices regarding hospital diets are very heterogeneous. Hospital diets are rarely prescribed by physicians, and sometimes the choices of diets are based on arbitrary reasons. Often prescriptions are made independently from the evaluation of nutritional status, and without taking into account the nutritional status.

Background And Aim: No marker to categorise the severity of chronic intestinal failure (CIF) has been developed. A 1-year international survey was carried out to investigate whether the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism clinical classification of CIF, based on the type and volume of the intravenous supplementation (IVS), could be an indicator of CIF severity.

Methods: At baseline, participating home parenteral nutrition (HPN) centres enrolled all adults with ongoing CIF due to non-malignant disease; demographic data, body mass index, CIF mechanism, underlying disease, HPN duration and IVS category were recorded for each patient.

Background & Aims: The safety and effectiveness of a home parenteral nutrition (HPN) program depends both on the expertise and the management approach of the HPN center. We aimed to evaluate both the approaches of different international HPN-centers in their provision of HPN and the types of intravenous supplementation (IVS)-admixtures prescribed to patients with chronic intestinal failure (CIF).

Methods: In March 2015, 65 centers from 22 countries enrolled 3239 patients (benign disease 90.

Acute intestinal failure: International multicenter point-of-prevalence study.

Clin Nutr

January 2020

Department of Digestive System, Center for Chronic Intestinal Failure, St Orsola-Malpighi Hospital, University of Bologna, Via Massarenti, 9, 40138, Bologna, Italy. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Intestinal failure (IF) is defined by the need for intravenous nutrition due to an inability to absorb nutrients; acute IF is a reversible type that affects hospitalized patients.
  • A study in 23 hospitals found that 206 out of 338 patients receiving parenteral nutrition (PN) were identified with acute IF, mostly due to issues like disordered gut motility and prior abdominal surgeries.
  • Hospital mortality for patients was high at 21.5%, with a median stay of 36 days; longer PN duration (≥42 days) was linked to a higher risk of 90-day mortality, alongside factors like age and ICU admission.

Endotoxin regulates matrix genes increasing reactive oxygen species generation by intercellular communication between palmitate-treated hepatocyte and stellate cell.

Nutrition Metabolisms and Cancer Institute, Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale U1241, INRA, Université de Rennes 1, Université Bretagne Loire, Rennes, France.

Previous studies have shown that gut-derived bacterial endotoxins contribute in the progression of simple steatosis to steatohepatitis, although the mechanism(s) remains inaccurate to date. As hepatic stellate cells (HSC) play a pivotal role in the accumulation of excessive extracellular matrix (ECM), leading to collagen deposition, fibrosis, and perpetuation of inflammatory response, an in vitro model was developed to investigate the crosstalk between HSC and hepatocytes (human hepatoma cell) pretreated with palmitate. Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulated HSC with phosphorylation of the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase/NF-κB pathway, while several important pro-inflammatory cytokines were upregulated in the presence of hepatocyte-HSC.
