Background: The lockdown measures during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic could have influenced drug consumption patterns of persons with drug use disorder, especially due to a reduced availability of drugs, an increased consumption of sedating substances as a coping strategy, or a shift to novel psychotropic substances (NPS) associated with an increased drug buying in the internet. In this study, the consumption patterns of people mainly with opioid use disorder entering inpatient drug detoxification treatment were investigated in the same hospitals with the same methods before and during the pandemic.

Methods: At admission, patients were interviewed regarding their consumption patterns using the EuropASI questionnaire.

Life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias such as ventricular fibrillation are often based on chaotic spiral or scroll wave dynamics which can be self-terminating. In this work, we investigate the influence of conduction heterogeneities on the duration of such chaotic transients in generic models of excitable cardiac media. We observe that low and medium densities of heterogeneities extend the average transient lifetime, while at high densities very long transients, potentially persistent chaos, and periodic attractors occur.

In this work we demonstrate the first laboratory study results of lens fragmentation with low-energy picosecond ultrashort laser pulses after artificial induction of cataract with microwave radiation on an ex vivo animal model. This method will be evaluated with regard to the further development of lens fragmentation with novel ultrashort picosecond laser systems instead of ultrasonic phacoemulsification or the significantly more complex femtosecond laser fragmentation. Current treatments of cardiac arrhythmias like ventricular fibrillation involve the application of a high-energy electric shock, that induces significant electrical currents in the myocardium and therefore involves severe side effects like possible tissue damage and post-traumatic stress. Using numerical simulations on four different models of 2D excitable media, this study demonstrates that low energy pulses applied shortly after local minima in the mean value of the transmembrane potential provide high success rates. We evaluate the performance of this approach for ten initial conditions of each model, ten spatially different stimuli, and different shock amplitudes.

In this work, a spatially resolved analytical method based on scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) to distinguish different degradation phenomena in polymer electrolyte membranes was developed. SECM was combined with a Franz diffusion cell to distinguish between radical-induced aging of a sulfonated tetrafluoroethylene based fluoropolymer-copolymer due to deactivation of the sulfonic acid groups followed by a decreased proton conductivity, and the radical-induced formation of cracks and holes in the polymer. The experiments were performed with ferrocyanide as redox mediator to detect holes and cracks, and protons (sulfuric acid) to determine the through-plane proton conductivity, respectively.

The application of hydrogen proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) in greenhouse gas emission free heavy-duty vehicles requires extremely durable PEMFC components with service lives in the range of 30,000 h. In this paper we present an open-source Time-of-Flight and radar dataset of a neonatal thorax simulator for the development of respiratory rate detection algorithms. As it is very difficult to gain recordings of (preterm) neonates and there is hardly any open-source data available, we built our own neonatal thorax simulator which simulates the movement of the thorax due to respiration. We recorded Time-of-Flight (ToF) and radar data at different respiratory rates in a range of 5 to 80 breaths per minute (BPM) and with varying upstroke heights.

Spheroid culture might stabilize the ligamentocyte phenotype. Therefore, the phenotype of lapine cruciate ligamentocyte (L-CLs) minispheroids prepared either by hanging drop (HD) method or by using a novel spheroid plate (SP) and the option of methyl cellulose (MC) for tuning spheroid formation was tested. A total of 250 and 1000 L-CLs per spheroid were seeded as HDs or on an SP before performing cell viability assay, morphometry, gene expression (qRT-PCR) and protein immunolocalization after 7 (HD/SP) and 14 (SP) days.
