Introduction: Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) brings along changes in the immune system, restoring dendritic cell function, reducing T2 inflammation and augmenting the regulatory cell activation. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections, interferes with the immune system causing immune suppression during the first phase and over-activation in more advanced disease. We decided to explore the interaction of both in a real-world observational trial.

Article Synopsis
  • IgA nephropathy (IgAN) and minimal change disease (MCD) are the most frequently reported glomerular diseases following COVID-19 vaccinations, especially mRNA vaccines, along with others like membranous nephropathy.
  • A global registry was created to collect anonymized data on patients with glomerular diseases suspected after vaccination, focusing on vaccination details, kidney function, and treatment outcomes.
  • Results show that while IgAN and MCD have a better chance of kidney function recovery and reduced proteinuria within 4–6 months post-vaccination, causality remains unproven despite a temporal link.

Objective: To assess whether automated office blood pressure (BP) (AOBP) measurement is a better method for measuring BP in the office than conventional techniques and an alternative to out-of-office BP measurements: home-self BP (HSBP) or ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM).

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 74 patients and compared AOBP with the conventional technique using a mercury sphygmomanometer and with both out-to-office BP measurements: HSBP of 7 days (three measurements in the morning, afternoon, and night) and daytime ABPM. In addition, we compared BP values obtained using HSBP and ABPM to determine their level of agreement.

  • Mendelian susceptibility to mycobacterial disease (MSMD) is a rare genetic disorder that weakens the immune response to mycobacteria and can lead to severe infections, even in healthy individuals.
  • A study in Mexico reviewed 22 MSMD patients from 2006 to 2021, revealing that 70% developed infections after receiving the BCG vaccine, with some also suffering from other bacterial and fungal infections.
  • Genetic analysis showed 13 variants in genes associated with MSMD, primarily in IL12RB1, indicating that deficiencies in this gene are the main cause of the condition in the patients studied.

Pharmaceuticals (Basel)

March 2022

Departamento de Cirugía y Especialidades Médico-Quirúrgicas, Universidad de Barcelona, 08036 Barcelona, Spain.

For the first time, the present study employed hair testing to investigate the prevalence of classical drugs of abuse and new psychoactive substances use during gestation in a cohort of 300 Mexican pregnant women. An interview was conducted to collect data on sociodemographic aspects of the patients, and a 9 cm-long hair strand was taken from the back of the head of each mother one month after delivery. A validated ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography−high-resolution mass spectrometry method was used for the screening of classic drugs, new psychoactive substances, and medications in maternal hair.
