Article Synopsis
  • New tetrakis Eu and Gd β-diketonate complexes with benzimidazolium as a counterion were synthesized using a one-pot method, and one specific complex was incorporated into a PMMA matrix showing excellent photonic features.
  • Characterization techniques like ESI-MS, FTIR, and X-ray diffraction were used to analyze the complexes, revealing unique intermolecular interactions and stability of the PMMA-doped material at high temperatures.
  • The study highlighted that the materials exhibited strong photoluminescence with significant red emission when exposed to various UV wavelengths and sunlight, suggesting their potential as efficient light-converting molecular devices.

Seaweed, traditionally part of the daily diet of Asian countries, has become a common dish in Western countries. In Brazil, although contributing to lesser amounts, seaweed consumption has been incorporated into the population eating habits. It is well established that seaweed contains (1) several biologically active components and (2) the ability to accumulate minerals and trace elements, both of which are essential and potentially toxic.

Introduction: Estimates of the worldwide increase in amputees raises the awareness to solve long-standing problems. Understanding the functional brain modifications after a lower limb amputation (LLA) is one of the first steps towards proposing new rehabilitation approaches. Functional modifications in the central nervous system due the amputation could be involved in prosthesis use failures and Phantom Limb Pain (PLP), increasing costs and overwhelming the health services.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a neglected disease caused by Leishmania parasites. The oral drug miltefosine is effective, but there is a growing problem of drug resistance, which has led to increasing treatment failure rates and relapse of infections. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) combines a light source and a photoactive drug to promote cell death by oxidative stress.

Snakebite accidents, neglected tropical diseases per the WHO, pose a significant public health threat due to their severity and frequency. Envenomation by genus snakes leads to severe manifestations due to proteolytic enzymes. While the antibothropic serum produced by the Butantan Institute saves lives, its efficacy is limited as it fails to neutralize certain serine proteases.

Radioactive Seed Localization for Nonpalpable Breast Lesions: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Diagnostics (Basel)

February 2024

Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN/CNEN-SP), University of São Paulo (USP), Av. Professor Lineu Prestes 2242, São Paulo 05508-000, SP, Brazil.

Background: This study is a systematic review with meta-analysis comparing radioactive seed localization (RSL) versus radio-guided occult lesion localization (ROLL) and wire-guided localization (WGL) for patients with impalpable breast cancer undergoing breast-conserving surgery and evaluating efficacy, safety, and logistical outcomes. The protocol is registered in PROSPERO with the number CRD42022299726.

Methods: A search was conducted in the Embase, Lilacs, Pubmed, Scielo, Web of Science, and clinicaltrials.

Microplastic pollution is a growing public concern as these particles are ubiquitous in various environments and can fragment into smaller nanoplastics. Another environmental concern arises from widely used engineered nanoparticles. Despite the increasing abundance of these nano-sized pollutants and the possibility of interactions with organisms at the sub cellular level, with many risks still being unknown, there are only a few publications on this topic due to the lack of reliable techniques for nanoparticle characterization.

Purpose: To evaluate the relationship between the nonperfusion area (NPA) from widefield optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and macular vascular parameters in diabetic retinopathy (DR).

Methods: In total, 51 eyes from 51 patients with proliferative DR (PDR) or moderate/severe non-PDR were included. Widefield OCTA using the Zeiss Plex Elite 9000 was performed.

Radiotherapy is a well-established cancer treatment; it is estimated that approximately 52% of oncology patients will require this treatment modality at least once. However, some tumors, such as triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), may present as radioresistant and thus require high doses of ionizing radiation and a prolonged period of treatment, which may result in more severe side effects. Moreover, such tumors show a high incidence of metastases and decreased survival expectancy of the patient.

The emergence of drug resistance in cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) has become a major problem over the past decades. The spread of resistant phenotypes has been attributed to the wide misuse of current antileishmanial chemotherapy, which is a serious threat to global health. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been shown to be effective against a wide spectrum of drug-resistant pathogens.

The unbridled use of antimicrobial drugs over the last decades contributed to the global dissemination of drug-resistant pathogens and increasing rates of life-threatening infections for which limited therapeutic options are available. Currently, the search for safe, fast, and effective therapeutic strategies to combat infectious diseases is a worldwide demand. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (APDT) rises as a promising therapeutic approach against a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms.

Background: Tumour hypoxia is associated with increased metastasis, invasion, poor therapy response and prognosis. Most PET radiotracers developed and used for clinical hypoxia imaging belong to the 2-nitroimidazole family. Recently we have developed novel 2-nitroimidazole-derived PET radiotracer [F]FBNA (N-(4-[F]fluoro-benzyl)-2-(2-nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)-acet-amide), an F-labeled analogue of antiparasitic drug benznidazole.

Melanoma is a serious and aggressive type of skin cancer with growing incidence, and it is the leading cause of death among those affected by this disease. Although surgical resection has been employed as a first-line treatment for the early stages of the tumor, noninvasive topical treatments might represent an alternative option. However, they can be irritating to the skin and result in undesirable side effects.

New Insights into the Bacterial Targets of Antimicrobial Blue Light.

Microbiol Spectr

February 2023

Department of Clinical and Toxicological Analysis, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

Antimicrobial blue light (aBL) offers efficacy and safety in treating infections. However, the bacterial targets for aBL are still poorly understood and may be dependent on bacterial species. Here, we investigated the biological targets of bacterial killing by aBL (λ = 410 nm) on three pathogens: Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Chitosan films are commonly used for wound dressing, provided that this polymer has healing, mucoadhesiveness and antimicrobial properties. These properties can be further reinforced by the combination of chitosan with polysaccharides and glycoproteins present in aloe vera, together with copaiba oleoresin's pharmacological activity attributed to sesquiterpenes. In this work, we developed chitosan films containing either aloe vera, copaiba oil or both, by casting technique, and evaluated their microbial permeation, antimicrobial activity, cytotoxicity, and in vivo healing potential in female adult rats.

Melanoma is a highly aggressive skin cancer that requires new approaches for its management. Low-level laser therapy, currently named photobiomodulation therapy (PBM), has been used to improve different conditions but its effects and safe use on melanoma remain unexplored. Herein, we investigated the PBM impact on melanoma cells differing by pigmentation using near-infrared (NIR) and red lasers in vitro.

Several diseases or conditions cause dermatological disorders that hinder the process of skin repair. The search for novel technologies has inspired the combination of stem cell (SC) and light-based therapies to ameliorate skin wound repair. Herein, we systematically revised the impact of photobiomodulation therapy (PBM) combined with SCs in animal models of skin wounds and quantitatively evaluated this effect through a meta-analysis.
