The current process for creating zirconia reconstructions for teeth is time-consuming, expensive, and results in tool wear and raw material waste. An alternative method, near-net shape additive manufacturing capable of producing samples with color gradient is presented as an innovative and more efficient solution. A low-cost robocasting system, which enabled the co-extrusion of two different ceramic inks, was designed and developed.

Iron-gall inks, a vital part of our written cultural heritage, are at risk of complete loss due to degradation, a potential loss that we must urgently address. These inks are based on Fe-complexes with phenolic compounds, which grow to form a complex network of iron oxyhydroxides. Over time, these black inks turn into brownish tones, with extensive degradation in paper support leading to extensive breaking.

This study focused on standard Compact Tension (CT) specimens and two loading modes during the numerical analyses carried out, namely: pure mode I and mixed-mode loading (Modes I+II). Numerical stress intensity factors, K, were calculated using Abaqus 2022 and compared with those given analytically under pure mode I loading, showing very good agreement. Additionally, K, K, and K results obtained from Abaqus were presented for mixed-mode loading, analyzing crack growth and variation through the thickness of the CT specimen.

Biotechnological active peptides are gaining interest in the cosmetics industry due to their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-collagenase (ACE) effects, as well as wound healing properties, making them suitable for cosmetic formulations. The antimicrobial activity of peptides (2-10 kDa) secreted by Ethanol-Red was evaluated against dermal pathogens using broth microdilution and challenge tests. ACE was assessed using a collagenase activity colorimetric assay, antioxidant activity via spectrophotometric monitoring of nitrotetrazolium blue chloride (NBT) reduction, and anti-inflammatory effects by quantifying TNF-α mRNA in lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-exposed dermal fibroblasts.

Treating saline streams presents considerable challenges due to their adverse effects on conventional biological processes, thereby leading to increased expenses in managing those side streams. With this in consideration, this study explores into the potential for valorizing fermented cheese whey (CW), a by-product of the dairy industry, into polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) using mixed microbial cultures (MMC) under conditions of near-seawater salinity (30 g/L). The selection of a PHA-accumulating MMC was successfully achieved using a sequential batch reactor operated under a feast and famine regime, with a hydraulic retention time of 14.

Members of the widely conserved high temperature requirement A (HtrA) family of serine proteases are involved in multiple aspects of protein quality control. In this context, they have been shown to efficiently degrade misfolded proteins or protein fragments. However, recent reports suggest that folded proteins can also be native substrates.

Bioplastics are a sustainable and environmental-friendly alternative to the conventional petroleum-based plastics, namely due to their source (biobased) and due to their biodegradability or both. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) stand out among the bioplastics group by being intracellular biobased, biodegradable and biocompatible polymers. PHA production has been highly investigated during the last decades.

In recent years, there has been extensive research within the scientific community on deep eutectic systems due to their remarkable versatility in solubilizing diverse substances and serving as effective solvents in catalytic processes. While initially regarded as non-toxic, a comprehensive toxicological assessment is essential to comprehend their behavior within organisms. In this study, seven distinct systems, composed of N,N,N-triethyl-N-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)ammonium chloride (N00Cl) and glycerol-derived ethers with alkyl chains of varying lengths (100, 200, 3F00, 300, 3i00, and 400), in a 1:2 molar ratio were investigated for their aquatic toxicity in shrimp (Palaemon varians).

Cytoplasmic inclusion bodies (IBs) are a common feature of single-stranded, non-segmented, negative-strand RNA virus (Mononegavirales) infections and are thought to be regions of active virus transcription and replication. Here we followed the dynamics of IB formation and maintenance in cells infected with persistent and lytic/acute variants of the paramyxovirus, parainfluenza virus type 5 (PIV5). We show that there is a rapid increase in the number of small inclusions bodies up until approximately 12 h post-infection.

A new method was evaluated and developed for the analysis of pesticides in sandy-loam soil by direct-immersion solid phase microextraction (DI-SPME) followed by gas chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) determination. Ten pesticides were selected based on a literature survey of the compounds reported to be present in EU soils. The extraction was performed using SPME LC-Tips, a new SPME configuration with the coated fibers attached to a disposable and easy-to-handle micropipette tip, which was immersed into a soil slurry made by the addition of an aqueous solution to the soil sample.

Herein, we describe the synthesis and characterization of a series of thiosemicarbazone platinacycles. Their activity towards HCT116 and A2780 cancer cell lines as well as normal fibroblasts was explored and conclusions about the influence of their structures were drawn based on the results. Ligands L1-3, tetranuclear compounds L1-3, L1-3, and L1-L3, and phosphine derivatives, were deemed unpromising owing to their lack of activity.
