Comparison of the techniques for isolating immunoassay-suitable proteins from heterogeneous fecal samples.

Immunoassays could provide valuable insights into disease biomarkers and gut health by measuring fecal proteins. However, reliably isolating intact proteins from feces is challenging due to its heterogeneous and variable composition. This paper aims to review and compare different methods for extracting proteins from fecal samples to make them suitable for immunoassay analysis.

Acute management of adults following chest wall injury: An assessment of institutional clinical practice guidelines across the UK and synthesis of care recommendations.

Objective: Chest wall injury causes significant morbidity and mortality. There is uncertainty regarding many aspects of clinical care for these patients, including optimal analgesia, acuity of monitoring and surgical fixation. Our aim in this work is to [1] objectively appraise the quality and extent of heterogeneity in UK major trauma centre (MTC) clinical practice guidelines regarding the management of chest wall injury; and [2] narratively summarise clinical and care process recommendations from these guidelines to provide a comparative description of recommendations between institutions.

Background: Citation scores (CS) are traditionally used to measure the impact of scientific publications. Altmetric Attention Scores (AAS), in contrast, consider the digital dissemination of articles across social media platforms to track their audience reach. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to determine the correlation between AAS and CS in 12 high-impact-factor journals in the category of 'Clinical Medicine'.

One Year of Gluten-Free Diet Impacts Gut Function and Microbiome in Celiac Disease.

Background & Aims: Currently, the main treatment for celiac disease (CD) is the gluten-free diet (GFD). This observational cohort study investigated the impact of CD and 1 year of GFD on gut function and microbiome.

Methods: A total of 36 newly diagnosed patients and 36 healthy volunteers (HVs) were studied at baseline and at 12-month follow-up.

Artificial intelligence in respiratory care: perspectives on critical opportunities and challenges.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming respiratory healthcare through a wide range of deep learning and generative tools, and is increasingly integrated into both patients' lives and routine respiratory care. The implications of AI in respiratory care are vast and multifaceted, presenting both promises and uncertainties from the perspectives of clinicians, patients and society. Clinicians contemplate whether AI will streamline or complicate their daily tasks, while patients weigh the potential benefits of personalised self-management support against risks such as data privacy concerns and misinformation.

Acetabular dysplasia and the risk of developing hip osteoarthritis within 4-8 years: An individual participant data meta-analysis of 18,807 hips from the World COACH consortium.

Objective: To study the association between various radiographic definitions of acetabular dysplasia (AD) and incident radiographic hip osteoarthritis (RHOA), and to analyze in subgroups.

Methods: Hips free of RHOA at baseline and with follow-up within 4-8 years were drawn from the World COACH consortium. The Wiberg center edge angle (WCEA), acetabular depth width ratio (ADR), and the modified acetabular index (mAI) were calculated.

Nuclear morphological characterisation of lobular carcinoma variants: a morphometric study.

Background And Aims: Lobular carcinoma (LC) of the breast exhibits diverse morphology and clinical behaviour. The pleomorphic variant (pLC) displays distinct cytonuclear features and aggressiveness compared to the classic variant (cLC). However, diagnosing pLC remains subjective.

Cost-effectiveness of long-acting progestogens versus the combined oral contraceptives pill for preventing recurrence of endometriosis-related pain following surgery: an economic evaluation alongside the PRE-EMPT trial.

Objectives: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of long-acting progestogens (LAP), including levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) and depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), compared with the combined oral contraceptives pill (COCP) in preventing recurrence of endometriosis-related pain postsurgery.

Design: Within-trial economic evaluation alongside a multicentre, pragmatic, parallel-group, open-label, randomised controlled trial (Preventing Recurrence of Endometriosis by means of Long-Acting Progestogen Therapy trial).

Setting: Thirty-four UK hospitals recruiting participants from November 2015 to March 2019.

Efficacy and Safety of Daratumumab in Intermediate/High-risk Smoldering Multiple Myeloma: Final Analysis of CENTAURUS.

Early intervention of smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) may delay progression to multiple myeloma. Here, we present the final analysis of the phase 2 CENTAURUS study (NCT02316106). In total, 123 patients with intermediate/high-risk SMM were randomized to intravenous daratumumab 16 mg/kg following a Long intense (n = 41), Intermediate (n = 41), or Short intense (n = 41) dosing schedule.

The effect of haemoglobin and blood transfusion on preterm infant gut perfusion and injury.

Introduction: There is significant uncertainty regarding the role that anaemia or red blood cell transfusion (RBCT) plays in the development of gut injury in preterm infants. This study evaluated Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) together with a range of known biomarkers of gut inflammation to identify their relationship with anaemia and RBCT.

Method: A prospective observational study of preterm infants born at <30 weeks gestation was conducted from birth until either 36 weeks post conceptional age or discharge home.

Perception is an important aspect of our personal lives, interpersonal interactions and professional activities and performance. A large body of psychological research has been dedicated to exploring how perception happens, whether and when it involves conscious awareness and what are the physiological correlates, such as skin-conductance and heart-rate responses, that occur when we perceive particularly emotional elicitors. A more recent and less explored question in psychological science is how and when misperception happens, and what are the physiological characteristics of the misperception of emotion.

Addressing pain in people living with cystic fibrosis: Cystic fibrosis foundation evidence-informed guidelines.

Even as many outcomes for people living with cystic fibrosis (PLwCF) improve, individuals still experience extensive symptom burdens. From birth, many PLwCF experience both pain as a symptom of their CF disease and procedural pain, posing detriments to health, functioning, and quality of life. Despite its prevalence and impact, there is no CF-specific guidance for the assessment and management of pain.

Early mental health intervention and supported self-care for LGBTQ+ young people in the UK: a mixed-methods study.

Background: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer/questioning, plus young people have a higher risk of poor mental health in comparison to cisgendered heterosexual young people, and they underutilise mental health services and support. In addition, there is a paucity of research conducted in United Kingdom examining mental health early intervention provision for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer/questioning, plus young people.

Objectives: To produce a model of what works for early intervention mental health support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer/questioning, plus young people and increase understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer/questioning, plus young people's access to, navigation of, and engagement with mental health support.

A multi-view learning approach with diffusion model to synthesize FDG PET from MRI T1WI for diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

Introduction: This study presents a novel multi-view learning approach for machine learning (ML)-based Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis.

Methods: A diffusion model is proposed to synthesize the fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) view from the magnetic resonance imaging T1 weighted imaging (MRI T1WI) view and incorporate two synthesis strategies: one-way synthesis and two-way synthesis. To assess the utility of the synthesized views, we use multilayer perceptron (MLP)-based classifiers with various combinations of the views.
